Part 6

Questions 30–34

Read the text and the questions below.

For each question, circle the correct letter: A, B or C.

The teenage ice skating star

Sports journalist Tessa Jarvis meets 12-year-old ice skater, Daniel Thurston

Daniel Thurston started ice skating when he was just five years old. His mother
liked watching ice skating on TV. Daniel also loved watching the way the skaters
jumped and danced, and asked if he could do it. His older sister, Ellie, then
showed him some photographs of ice skaters in a sports magazine. Ellie
sometimes went ice skating with friends, so their mum let Daniel skate with her.

Daniel entered his first competition at the age of seven. His aunt made his
costume, and although it was much too big, Daniel didn’t mind wearing it. He
skated quite well and was amazed he didn’t get better marks. However, he
couldn’t stop thinking about the big crowd that was watching, which meant he
made a couple of mistakes.

Daniel’s parents have taken him to many other tournaments since, and he has
come first in several of them. ‘That’s always fantastic,’ explains Daniel. ‘But
learning to do difficult jumps and moves during training is the best feeling ever.
And being on the ice with other skaters is great fun too – I learn so much from
them.’

Daniel has some advice for anyone thinking of starting ice skating: ‘Practice is
extremely important, but if you spend all day, every day, on the ice, you’ll soon get
bored. And don’t try too hard – you will get better, so just have a good time. And
you really need to get an experienced teacher, but only after you’ve done it for a
while and decided it’s the sport for you.’
