D IRECTIONS
Using the larger needle and a long tail cast on, CO 104 st. Put work onto smaller
needle and join in round; pm to mark beginning of round.
Knit in st st for 2.5cm/1”. *k1, p1* for 2 rows.
Increase - *k1, k1f&b* - 156 st. Knit in st st for another 2.5cm/1”.
Change to larger needles and St st until work measures 11.5cm/41/2” from rolled
edge (about 9cm/31/2” from top of ribbed section). Place 5 more markers evenly
around knitting, ie every 26 st.
Start decreases - *k to 2 st before marker, k2tog, slm* 6 times. Repeat for every
round until 6 st remain. Change to dpns when the work becomes too small for
your circular needle. *k1, k2tog* twice – 4 st remain.
Topper – k a 4 st I cord for 5 or 6 rows. Break yarn, leaving a 10cm/4” tail. Thread
the tail on to a needle and pull through the last 4 st and then down through the
I cord , into the hat.
Finishing – Weave in loose ends. Dampen thoroughly and block on a
27cm/101/2” dinner plate. (Don’t skip this step!) Et voila!

If you really need it to be larger, CO 108 st and make the brim 1.25cm/1/2”
deeper before beginning the decreases. Just keep in mind the 20% rule –
measure your head, knock off 20%, and that’s as big as it should be.
