1 Greetings from E-learning center. Welcome to the Vocabulary skill of Unit 5
about “Using the dictionary to find the correct meaning”. You may have been
familiar with a monolingual dictionary such as Cambridge dictionary or
Oxford dictionary, but how can we make good use of our dictionary to find
the correct meaning of a word in a particular context. Let’s check everything
out.
2 At the end of this lesson, you will be able to use the dictionary to find the
correct meaning of a word in a particular context.
3 So, how can we use the dictionary to find the correct meaning of a certain
word? Words often have more than one meaning. When dictionaries include
more than one meaning, the different definitions are usually numbered. When
you are using a dictionary to find the correct meaning for a word, it is
important to read the entire sentence and consider the context.
Let’s take a closer look at this dictionary entry from Oxford leaners’
dictionary.
The word “consume” has 4 different meanings, so it depends on a particular
context, “consume” can mean “to use petrol”, “to eat or drink” or other
meanings.

4 Here are two examples where “consume” means differently.


1. Mountains began to consume my thoughts.
Definition 4 is correct.
“consume” in this context means “affect someone very strongly”
2. Before he died, he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol.
Definition 2 is correct.
“consume” in this sentence means “eat / drink”

5 Now, let’s get some practice with this exercise.


Read these sentences from the readings. Look up the underlined words in
your dictionary and write the correct definition based on the context. You can
pause the video for about 3 minutes to complete this task before checking the
answer in the next slide.
1.What is it that drives some people to embrace extreme risks, while the rest
of us run to the safety of the sidelines?

2. He notes that most of us reach a point that limits our appetite for extreme
risks, and as a result, our ability to perform well in dangerous conditions.

dictionary.
The word “embrace” means “to accept an idea” according to Oxford
dictionary.

extreme risks, and as a result, our ability to perform well in dangerous
conditions.

“appetite” in this context means “a strong desire for something”, which is


meaning 2 in Oxford dictionary.
