Service Learning Journal – Employer

April 29, 2024

For my service project this semester, I completed an employer project. I volunteered to help

with the Salt Lake City Marathon, a portion of the proceeds go to the University of Utah

Huntsman Cancer Institute. The race takes place in April every year with a large portion of the

city's streets being shut down to accommodate the race. This year the marathon took place on

Saturday April 20th, 2024. My service was completed on the evening of April 17th as I was

tasked with packing snack bags for runners. This service was completed in just over 2 hours.

Most bags contained a piece of fruit (apple, orange, or banana), granola or a granola bar, and

water. Once the bags were packed, they were placed in a tote where they were meant to remain

until the day of the race. The runners could pick up a bag full of snacks upon race completion

for free. These snacks hopefully allowed the participants to replenish a little bit of the energy

used so that they could enjoy the rest of the day with their friends and families. The finish line

was lined with stalls, vendors, and community outreach booths to browse after the race. Seeing

the number of bags packed and runners that participated shows how strong the community

system is in Salt Lake City. This was a great opportunity to see the impact the hospital has on its

patients and the rest of the community we strive to serve. I have attached a link to the Salt Lake

City Marathon website for further information. https://saltlakecitymarathon.com/
