Comprehension Passage Marks: 30

Q3 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions.

Comic-con comes to our School!

6th eraders decide to out on their own comic convention

Next weekend, students and their families will get the chance to experience their very own
'Comic-con'. lt will be held in and around the main hall here at school, and events kick off at
L0 am on Saturday, 7th April. They carry on right through to 5 pm on Sunday.

What is 'Comic-con'? The real event takes place every year in California, USA, and now has
about 130,000visitors, allof whom have an interest in comic books, films, and characters.
Comic-con is a world-famous festival where fans can find out more about their favourite
characters such as Spider-Man, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, or Thor. Equally, they can
meet their favourite comic book writers or artists such as Japan's Yoshitaka Amano, who is
responsible for the drawings in Sandmon: the Dream Hunters.
However, not everyone can go to California. This is why our school students decided to put
on their own event. lt is th!.brainchild of 1L-year-old Hana Khalid who says, "l have always
loved comic books and graphic novels, ever since I watched Pok6mon and bought my first
copy of the comic at a bookstore." When she realised there were lots of other students who
were fans, she decided to put an event together. The purpose of the Comic-con was to
celebrate comic book art because so many students were also drawing their own versions of
comic book art so perfectly. Luckily, there were plenty of staff members as well who were
willing and prepared to help out.
So, what can you see? On Saturday, in the main hall, there will be an exhibition of real comic
books and magazines which students have submitted. Each comic or magazine will have a
label saying who it belongs to, and why they like it so much. ln classrooms 41 and 42 there
will be workshops led by the staff from the art department for those who wish to try their
hand at creating their own graphic books or comics. Their work will be displayed for
everyone to view on Sunday.
As well as visiting this exhibition on Sunday, the platform will provide students a chance to
dress up as their favourite character and flaunt their costumes in the crowd. Tliose who
wish to participate in a show for these costumes can do so on the catwalk. A panel of judges
will choose the most striking costume and award prizes. The same judges will also look at
the comic art created by students in the workshops and award a prize forthe best in the
storyboard, design, or graphic story.
There will be lots of other events too, including a screening of the latest 'spider-Man' movie
as well as some old classics. Who knows? lf the festival is successful, it could become an
annual event.

Literary Text Marks:20

Q4 Read the given passage tram The tungle Bookby Rudyard Kipling carefully and answer
the following questions.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
This is the story of the great war that Rikki-tikki-tavi fought single-handed, through the bath-
rooms of the big bungalow in Segowlee cantonment. Darzee, the Tailorbird, helped him, and
Chuchundra, the musk-rat, who never comes out into the middle of the floor, but always
creeps round bythe wall, gave him advice, but Rikki-tikki did the realfighting,
He was a mongoose, rather like a little cat in his fur and his tail, but quite like a weasel in his
head and his habits. His eyes and the end of his restless nose were pink. He could scratch
himself anywhere he pleased with any leg, front or back, that he chose to use. He could fluff
up his tailtill it looked like a bottle brush, and his war cry as he scuttled through the long
grass was: " Rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk!',

One day, a high summer flood washed him out of the burrow where he tived with his father
and mother, and carried him, kicking and clucking, down a roadside ditch. He found a little
wisp of grass floating there, and clung to it till he lost his senses. When he revived, he was
lying in the hot sun on the middle of a garden path, very draggled indeed, and a small boy
was saying, "Here's a dead mongoose. Let,s have a funeral."
"No," said his mother, "let's take him in and dry him. Perhaps he isn't really dead."
They took him into the house, and a big man picked him up between his finger and thumb
and said he was not dead but half choked. So they wrapped him in cotton wool, and
warmed him over a little fire, and he opened his eyes and sneezed.
"Now," said the big man (he was an Englishman who had just moved into the bungalow);
"don't frighten him, and we'll see what he'll do."
It is the hardest thing in the world to frighten a mongoose, because he is eaten up from
nose to tail with curiosity. The motto of all the mongoose family is "Run and find out"; and
Rikki-tikki was a true mongoose. He looked at the cotton woot, decided that it was not good
to eat, ran all round the table, sat up and put his fur in order, scratched himself, and jumped
on the small boy's shoulder. ,

"Don't be frightened, Teddy," said his father. "That's his way of making friends.,,
"Ouch I He's tickling under my chin," said Teddy.

Rikki-tikki looked down between the boy's collar and neck, snuffed at his ear, and climbed
down to the floor, where he sat rubbing his nose.
"Good gracious," said Teddy's mother, "and that's a wild creature! I suppose he's so tame
because we've been kind to him."
"All mongooses are like that," said her husband. "lf Teddy doesn't pick him up bythe tail, or
try to put him in a cage, he'll run in and out of the house all day long. Let's give him
something to eat."
