2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

2.1. Flow Description

The steam system mainly consists of following:-

 Two parallel Cold Reheat (CRH) lines (08LBC03BR001 & 08LBC03BR002) are
routed from HP turbine exhaust and connected to CRH common header
(08LBC03BR024). This common header is again bifurcated into two parallel lines
(08LBC03BR003 & 08LBC03BR004) near the Boiler area which are then routed to
the reheater inlet headers. The function of Cold Reheat steam line is to convey steam
from HP turbine exhaust to reheater inlet.

 HP bypass line (08MAN02BR005) downstream of the HP PRDS valve is connected to

the CRH common header.

 A ventilator line connection (08LBC03BR025 & 08LBC03BR026) is provided from each

parallel lead of cold reheat lines upstream of pneumatically actuated check valve. These
lines combine to form a single line (08LBC03BR027). A ventilator valve
(08LBC03AA511) is provided on this line to dump the bottled up steam from HP turbine
casing into the condenser, whenever the temperature of the steam becomes very high
due to windage loss in the HP turbine at lower loads.

2.2. Main Components

Cold Reheat Steam system has the following major components:

2.2.1. Cold Reheat System Piping

2.2.2. Cold Reheat Piping Drains
2.2.3. Ventilator Line

2.2.1. Cold Reheat Steam System Piping

Two parallel Cold Reheat (CRH) lines (08LBC03BR001 & 08LBC03BR002) are routed
from HP turbine exhaust and connected to CRH common header (08LBC03BR024). This
common header is again bifurcated into two parallel lines (08LBC03BR003 &
08LBC03BR004) near the Boiler area which are then routed to the reheater inlet headers.

The cold reheat steam piping material is of alloy steel (ASTM A335 P11) from the HP
Turbine exhaust to the HP bypass connection to CRH common header and of carbon
steel (ASTM A106 Gr. B) from downstream of HP bypass connection to reheater inlet.

The design pressure of the Cold Reheat system is determined in accordance Design
Criteria Document (DCD). The Cold Reheat System Design Pressure is applicable for
the design of the Cold Reheat headers, branches, drain lines etc. Steam velocity is
maintained per velocity limits given in the Design Criteria Document (DCD).

Piping and piping components will be insulated with Rock Wool material for heat retention
and /or personnel protection. Each lead of Cold Reheat line consists of a pneumatically
actuated check valve near to the turbine (08LBC01AA701 & 08LBC01AA702). This
pneumatically actuated check valve prevents the back flow of steam to HP turbine during HP
Bypass valve operation.
Two (2) safety valves (08LBC99AA400, 08LBC99AA401 & 08LBC99AA402,
08LBC99AA403) are provided on each cold reheat steam lines near reheat inlet header
which acts as a safety protection device during over pressure or pressure surges in the cold
reheat steam lines.
The Cold Reheat Steam header also supplies Steam to Deaerator & BFP Turbine at low
loads, continuous to Feed water heater – 7, Auxiliary steam header and turbine gland
seal steam requirements of the steam turbine and also steam is supplied for the soot
blowers of boiler as per the requirement.

2.2.2. Cold Reheat Steam Piping Drains

The cold reheat steam piping is designed with draining facility which ultimately protects the
turbine from any ingress of accumulated water/condensate. The design of the cold reheat
steam system includes provisions for adequate drain at low point, in accordance with the
requirements of the ASME TDP-1.
Drain lines (08LBC03BR006 & 08LBC03BR009) with Motor operated drain valves
(08LBC03AA041 & 08LBC03AA042) are provided in each leads of cold reheat line on

upstream of pneumatically actuated check valves and are routed to condenser via Flash
tank. The operation of these drain valves is based on start-up/shut down sequence of the
turbine.
Manually operated Alternate drain valves (08LBC03AA104, 08LBC03AA105,
08LBC03AA106) are provided in the drain lines (08LBC03BR007, 08LBC03BR011 &
08LBC03BR015) which are routed to atmospheric flash tank. These drain valves are
operated only when respective motorized drain valves are closed. The operation of these
drain valves are based on operator’s discretion.
Low points in the cold reheat steam header are provided with drip leg. The drip leg
(08LBC03BR021) on the CRH common header is provided with motor operated drain valve
(08LBC03AA043) and drain is routed to condenser via turbine flash tank. The operation of
the drain valve is based on the level in the drip leg monitored by two level switches
(08LBC03CL201 & 08LBC03CL202)
Low points in ventilator line are provided with drip legs at upstream and down stream of
ventilator valve. Drip legs (08LBC03BR411 & 08LBC03BR415) are provided with dedicated
Solenoid operated drain valve (08LBC03AA417 & 08LBC03AA421) and drains are routed to
flash tank. The operation of these drain valves is based on level switches provided on the
drip legs.
CRH piping is designed to slope to these drains under all conditions of pipe expansion
from cold to hot positions. Manually-operated isolation valves are provided as a root valve
near to each drain connection. These manual valves are for maintenance purposes only
and should be LOCKED OPEN during unit operation. The motor-operated drain valve on
drain lines are operated in accordance with plant operation- Start-up and shutdown
sequences.

2.2.3. Ventilator Line

Ventilator line is provided with an on/off MOV (08LBC01AA511) in the upstream of the
low point drains near to the turbine exhaust. Whenever the HP exhaust temperature
becomes very high due to the windage loss this ventilator line will dump the HP exhaust
steam into the condenser. A desuperheater is provided to control the temperature of
dump steam to condenser. Spray water supply to the desuperheater is provided from
CEP discharge. Associated logics for ventilator valve will be built in Turbine Control
System.

4.2. Abnormal Operation

Four safety valves are provided, two on each reheater inlet header near the Steam
Generator; for Reheater and Cold Reheat steam piping protection from overpressure.
High pressure is released through these safety valves. Overpressure could develop if the
reheat stop or intercept valves close without a corresponding opening of the LP bypass
valve.

Whenever the turbine-generator is tripped, the Cold Reheat drain valves and HP & LP
Turbine bypass Valves will be opened immediately and the Power actuated NRVs will be
closed.

4.3. Start-up & Shut down Operation Philosophy

4.3.1. Normal Plant Start-up

Normally during the start-up of the plant after achieving required paramaeters,
CRH steam flow is established through HP bypass system. After achieving
required parameters the cold reheat steam will supply the seal steam for turbine
and for the auxiliary steam header.
The Cold Reheat Steam system drain MOVs are used to drain condensate from the
Cold Reheat Steam piping. These drains will be kept open the unit is synchronized
with grid and carrying approximately 20% load. After 20% Load drain valves will be
closed and the level controlled drip leg drain MOV at downstream of Check valve will
be operated based on condensate level in the drip leg.

Power operated check valves will be operated to prevent back flow of steam to
the Turbine during Bypass/start-up operation.

4.3.2. Normal Plant Shutdown

During unit shutdown, all system drain valves should be opened as the Cold
Reheat Steam system depressurizes, allowing steam and accumulated
condensate to drain to the condenser via turbine flash tank. These precautionary
measures are taken to prevent any accumulation of condensate formed in the cold
reheat steam piping and to assure that condensate will not enter the turbine
during hot restart resulting in damage to the turbine.
At approximately 15% of rated load, open all turbine drains except reheat steam
inlet piping drain. Ventilator valve will be operated based on HP turbine exhaust
temperature.

4.3.3. Ventilator Valve operation

The ventilator valve is opened in case of the turbine exhaust temperature goes
above 400°C (to be confirmed by LMTG) and is closed when the generator load is
above 10% and turbine exhaust temperature is below 360°C. The water spray
valve (08LCE13AA087) modulates to control the temperature downstream of
desuperheater. The spray valve receives signal from redundant temperature
transmitter located downstream of the desuperheater for opening and closing.
