PROLOGUE

Present perfect, past simple, pronunciation and vocabulary are very basic mistakes often
encountered by students, everyday objects around us sometimes we do not know their
English names have meaning. What is that. Or we don't know when to use it when we
don't need it or use it in the wrong way, with the wrong structure, with the wrong
meaning. English pronunciation is also very important, they help us to have a more
natural, native voice.

So, today my group chose this topic to learn more about the knowledge of present
perfect, past simple and the topic "Ambitions and dreams".

3
A. AMBITIONS AND DREAMS

1. Definition
- Ambition: is a noun that refers to a strong desire to do or achieve something. It can
also mean desire and detemination to achieve success. Some synonyms of
ambition include: aspiration, intention, goal, aim, objective, desire, … [1]
- Dream: there are many ways to explain this word. A dream is a series of thoughts,
images and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during sleep. In this
module, dream is the same meaning as cherished aspiration, ambition or ideal. It is
an event of condition that you hope for very much, although it is not likely to
happen. [1]

2. Steve Jobs – his ambitions and dreams

- Steve Jobs was a visionary entrepreneur who had a strong ambition to change the
world with his innovative ideas and products. He was driven by his desire to create
products that would change the world and make a difference in people’s lives. [2]
- Jobs’ ambition and dream were also reflected in his famous quote, “Here’s to the
crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the
square holes. The ones who see things differently… Because they change things.
They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy
ones, we see genius…” [3]
- In conclusion, Steve Jobs’ ambition and dream were the driving forces behind his
success. His vision and passion for creating products that would change the world
continue to inspire people today.

3. Present perfect and Past simple with “for”

- We use the Present perfect with “for” to talk about an action or state which
continues from the past to the present.

- We use the Past simple with “for” to talk about a past action or state in a period
of time which is finished.

4. Present perfect and Past simple with other time words

- We use the Past simple to talk about actions or state which are finished. We often
use the following time words:
+) days, dates, times, years

12
Ví dụ: in 2002, yesterday
+) last, ago
Ví dụ: last year, five year ago
+) questions and statements with “when”
Ví dụ: when I was 10 years old

- Often, there is no time phrase with the Present perfect. We do not know exactly
when the action happened.
Ví dụ: She’s lived in Italy, Egypt and France.

- When we use time words with Present perfect, they do not give a definite time.
Ví dụ:
 She’s just had her first baby. (= a short time ago)
 It’s already sold a million copies. (= before now/ before expected)
 I haven’t finished yet. (=before now; only in questions and negatives)
 He’s never been abroad. (= not at any time)

- We also use the Present perfect with time phrases that refer to a time that still in
progress.
