AP No.1 in pumped storage projects

AP is the state with the highest PSP capacity in the country
❖ The country needs 18.8 GW of PSCs by 2030-31
❖ State Govt promoting PSPs
❖ AP pumped storage energy policy has been formulated by the state last year
❖ Companies coming to the state with state government measures
❖ PSPs with a capacity of 16,180 MW have already been allotted to developers
❖ Establishment of PSCs in AP more than other states
❖ State Government study on 3 projects with a capacity of 2,750 MW
Pumped storage hydropower is a type of hydroelectric energy storage project. It is built on two water
reservoirs at different heights. These plants operate like conventional hydroelectric plants. In
addition to this there is the ability to reuse the same water over and over again. Moreover, electricity
can be generated by solar panels charging during the day in pumped storage plants. At night, water is
released from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir through the reservoir, causing the turbine to
move downwards and generate electricity. A project built once will work for eighty years. PSC
technology, which began in Italy and Switzerland in the 1890s, entered the United States in 1930.
Now it has spread all over the world. Recently, Andhra Pradesh has become the leader in the
establishment of PSCs in our country.
Andhra Pradesh, which stands as an example for other states in the country with reforms and
innovative technologies in the power sector, has achieved another feat. In order to avoid power
shortage in the state in the future, Pumped Storage Hydropower Project (PSP) has been initiated and
implemented and has become the first in the country in terms of PSP capacity. This has been disclosed
by the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy. It said that the states of Rajasthan, Telangana,
Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are in the next positions of AP.
