Introductory Message
Welcome to Media and Information Literacy!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Media & Information Literacy Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Media and Information Literacy Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY ACTIVITY SHEETS

Comparing and Contrasting the Different Types of Media

I. Learning Competency (MELC)

Compare and contrast how one particular issue or news is presented through the
different types of media (print, broadcast, online)

II. Background Information for Learners

There are different types of media that are readily accessible to us 24/7. These
are print, broadcast, and new
media.

Print media consists of

magazines, newspapers, flyers,
newsletters, scholarly journals
and other materials that are
physically printed on paper.
Broadcast media, on the other
hand, provides valuable
information that informs and
educates. This includes public
service announcements, daily
news, weather forecasts,
interviews, and documentaries. It
can also be recreational as it covers reality television, situation

and sketch comedies, movies, sports and advertising. Lastly, new media is any media –
from newspaper articles and blogs to music and podcasts – that are delivered digitally.
From a website or email to mobile phones and streaming apps, any internet-related
form of communication can be considered new media.

Media Convergence

Media Convergence is the coming together of calculations, telecommunication, and

media in a digital environment.

The most popular examples of Media Convergence are:

• Online Radio (converging radio with the Internet)

• E-books (converging paperbacks with the digital technology)
• News Websites and Apps
• Smartphones (camera, music, the internet, books, and all other media together)

IV. Activity Proper

Exercise 1: Using the Venn diagram, compare and contrast the three types of media by defining
the three terms and by giving examples for each type.

Print Media

Broadcast Media New Media

Exercise 2 : Watch the news on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qwcz4szl0E and read the

same news on https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news/metro/774511/robbers-meet-different-
fates-after-hitting-courier-service-in-qc/story/ . Compare and contrast how the news is presented
by answering the questions below.

1. What are the similarities and differences of the two modes in terms of completeness of
information?
2. Which of the two types of media you are likely to use as a source of information? Why?

Remember

Information is power. At this time and age, it is readily available and accessible
anytime, anywhere. We can get it through print where the information is delivered to
us through printed materials; broadcast where we get to listen or watch the news or
announcement; and it could be online where we get the information digitally using
the internet. Whatever mode we use as a source of information, always remember
to use sound judgment in choosing which information to believe and act upon and
which goes to the bin.

V. Reflection

Out of the 3 types of media, I prefer to use __________________________ as a

source/sources of information because
