CONTINENTAL SYSTEM
Definition

The CS was an economic policy introduced by Napoleon Bonaparte that forbid


European powers from trading with Britain.

The aim was to inflict on British trade.

They wanted to cripple British trade so that the British would not continue to
sponsor members of the coalition.
MILAN AND BERLIN
DECREES
1. Trade with Britain was forbidden in Europe.
2.British ships were not supposed to launch at any
European port.
3. British goods found in the continent were to be
confiscated.
4.those that accepted British orders in council were in a
state of blockade.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF
THE CONTINENTAL
SYSTEM European trade declined

Industries suffered and some were forced to close or retrench workers especially
those that relied on trade with the British.

There was mass unemployment in Europe.

There were shortages of various commodities eg British sugar.

Inflation was high

Prices of basic commodities soared

The effects the continental system were devastating

Diplomatic and peaceful means.
Napoleon deployed agents that confiscated British goods.
Signed treaties with various countries eg treaty of Tilsit with
Russia
Napoleon used Matrimonial alliance to ensure loyalty. He married
Marie Louise from Austria.
Napoleon closed ports that continued to entertain British ships. Eg
many German ports were closed.
MILITANT METHODS USED TO
ENSURE SURVIVAL OF THE
CONTINENTAL SYSTEM.
Napoleon Bonaparte used Spanish navy to patrol the seas.
Napoleon Bonaparte imposed stiff penalty on people who were found in
possession of British goods or circulating British goods.
Napoleon waged Punitive wars against countries quitted or refused to
sign Milan decrees eg peninsular war against Portugal and Moscow
campaign against Russia.
Napoleon deposed leaders who refuses Milan and Berlin decrees. Eg pope
and Louis Bonaparte of Holland were deposed
He imprisoned leaders who refused the Berlin and Milan decrees. Eg the

FROM COLLAPSE
1. Napoleon fought Portugal in the peninsular war
because it was a loopholes used to smuggle British goods.
2.Napoleon launched Moscow campaign when Russia
quitted the continental system
3.Napoleon fought Austria and Prussia at the battle of
Bautzen and Lautzen. These countries since they had
suffered devastating effects of the continental system
they decided to quit and smuggle British goods. NB.
HOW THE CONTINENTAL
SYSTEM COLLAPSED
Napoleon Bonaparte issued license allowing manufacturers to trade with
the British.
British destroyed the Danish fleet Napoleon intended to use to supervise
the sea or patrol the coast.
Many European countries smuggled British goods in the continent.
Some European countries rebranded British goods and circulated the
goods in Europe.
Some European countries quitted the continental system system eg
Russia

economic and military resources.
