Lesson Plan: Incredibox (SP2024) - 30 Min.

[1st lesson in the Unit]

Name: Bella Johnson Date: April 11, 2024

Grade: 9th Grade Class Type: Music Technology

1. Learning Objective(s): By the end of this lesson, students will be able to…
- Define what a loop is
- Create their own compositions using loops on Incredibox
- Identify the melody, harmony, bass, and vocal percussion when listening to a piece

2. Assessment:
- The students will have time in class to practice using the loops on Incredibox. This will be an
informal assessment. See “C. Assessment Activity” for a further description.
- The homework assignment will be a formative assessment to see what they took away from
the lesson. This assessment is further explained in “10. Assignment and Due Date”

3. Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks:

Creating
- Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work. Consistently apply research to generate
compositional ideas (e.g., to help generate new ideas, students listen to several different
recordings of pieces that use industrial sounds). (AG.M.Cr.01)
Responding
- Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work. Construct an argument for selecting one criteria over
another for evaluating a musical composition. (AG.M.R.09)

4. National Standards: [Music Technology]

Creating (plan and make)
- MU:Cr2.1.T.Ia: Select melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas to develop into a larger work
using digital tools and resources.
Connecting (Connect #10)
- MU:Re7.I.T.Ia: Cite reasons for choosing music based on the use of the elements of music,
digital and electronic aspects and connections to interest or purpose
Connecting (Connect #11)
- MU:Cr1.1.T.Ia: Generate melodic, rhythmic and harmonic ideas for compositions or
improvisations using digital tool

5. Accessible Teaching Strategies:

- I can check audio levels to ensure everyone can hear the examples
- I can have all students use headphones when working independently to minimize
distractions
- I may allow students to use my room, or find a place to set up around the school outside of
class time. This is so they can work on their project if they do not have access to wifi or tech
at home.
- I may reassign seating for students who need to be up close, farther away from others, or
close to good role models to encourage them to stay on task.
- Besides a screen recording tutorial, I may have the steps of how to record a project written
out in steps. This would allow students to see the steps visually with words. The screen
recording will also have captions.
- I may have certain slides printed for students who work better with physical copies, or need
materials in front of them.

6. Material, Repertoire, Equipment needed:

- One Computer or IPad for each student
- One pair of headphones for each student
- One projector
- One Adapter to connect the computer to the projector
- One Speaker to hear the audio
- One chair and one desk for each student (or tables that accommodates the number of
students)
- One slideshow about Incredibox
- Access to www.incredibox.com (+wifi)
- Video Trailer for Incredibox
- Pentatonix Songs: Bohemian Rhapsody and Daft Punk
- DCappella Song: Pow Pow Pow
- Incredibox Example 1 + Incredibox Example 2

7. Posted Agenda:
- Intro -> Examples -> Applications -> We Try -> Homework -> You Try (start homework)

8. Prior Knowledge:
- This is the first lesson in the Unit, and in a beginner music technology class. Due to this,
students do not need prior tech or music knowledge. Being familiar with Incredibox, or
terms such as melody, harmony are pluses, but not necessary.

9. Lesson Sequence

A. Opening: Pre-Class time, while students are entering

- A Cappella Music will be played, and I
chose the cover of “Pow Pow Pow” by
DCappella. It demonstrates the
impressive techniques of making music
using only vocals.
3 Minutes
- I will ask students what they already
know about A Cappella music, and the
site Incredibox. We will discuss elements
of A Cappella using the sample music.

B. Learning Activities: A.
3 Minutes
- Students will watch the Incredibox
Trailer. They will then expand on what
they learned in the video by looking at
screenshots from the website that have
been labeled. These can assist them when
they are navigating the website.
2 Minutes
- Students will then listen to two examples
of final projects on Incredibox.
3 Minutes
- Next, students will learn about how the
knowledge they will learn using
Incredibox can apply outside of the
website. These applications include
Soundtrap: The outfits on Incredibox mimic
loops that can be found on Soundtrap
A Cappella: Each category of sounds that
Incredibox has can represent each part in an A
Cappella group:
Incredibox: A Cappella:

Drums/Percussion Beatboxer

Effects Bassist

Melodies Lead/Soloist

Backing Vocals Harmonies (ex. Parts

like SATB)
6 Minutes
- I will guide the students through a
tutorial where we create a composition
together. I will talk through the process
of getting to the site, how to choose
loops, why to choose certain ones over
others, how to count the loop rotation,
and techniques (ex. Starting with
percussion/bass, then adding harmony
and melody OR muting and soloing
loops).
4 Minutes
- I will explain their homework
assignment, which will also review what
we just learned. I will also show them
how to record their assignment, and
share it with me.

C. Assessment Activity B. 9 Minutes

- For the remainder of class, students will
explore Incredibox independently, and
can start their homework assignment.
This work in class is an informal
assessment, but their homework will be
graded. I will go around and check in to
see if they have any questions.

D. Summative Activity/Closing/ Wrap-Up C.

Post Class:
- When the class is over, I will play music
again from the A Cappella playlist.

10. Assignment and Due Date:

1. Choose either: Alpha, Little Miss, or The Love
2. Create an Incredibox composition
- You must have at least two places where you replace one loop (shirt), with a different one
- You must have at least two places where you mute one loop (shirt), and bring them back in
- Use at least 5 different shirts in total
3. Record your project (refer to tutorial video under “Incredibox Notes” if needed)
- Recording should be at minimum 30 Seconds, and no longer than 1 minute
4. Post your link on Google Classroom to the assignment, “Incredibox 1”
