SECTION-E
CASE BASED QUESTIONS 4 X 3 = 12

34. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, merchants from the towns in Europe began
moving to the countryside, supplying money to peasants and artisans, persuading them to
produce for an international market. With the expansion of world trade and the acquisition Foto
of colonies in different parts of the world, the demand for goods began growing. But merchants
could not expand production within towns. This was because here urban crafts and trade guilds
were powerful These were associations of producers that trained craftspeople, maintained
control over production, regulated competition and prices, and restricted the entry of new people
into the trade. Rulers granted different guilds the monopoly right to produce and trade in specific
products. It was therefore difficult for new merchants to set up business in towns. So they turned
to the countryside.

(A) Where did the merchants start moving to and why?

(B) Define trade guilds.
(C) Did the expansion of world trade affect the demand for goods?

35. Read the following passages and answer the questions that follow:
In recent years, multipurpose projects and large dams have come under great scrutiny and
opposition for a variety of reasons. Regulating and damming of rivers affect their natural flow
causing poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir, resulting
in rockier stream beds and poorer habitats for the river's aquatic life. Dams also fragment rivers
making it difficult for aquatic fauna to migrate, especially for spawning. The reservoirs that are
created on the floodplains also submerge the existing vegetation and soil leading to its
decomposition over a period of time. Multipurpose projects and large dams have also been the
cause of many new environmental movements like the 'Narmada Bachao Andolan' and the Tehri
Dam Andolan' etc. Resistance to these projects has primarily been due to the large-scale
displacement of local communities. Local people often had to give up their land, livelihood and
their meagre access and control over resources for the greater good of the nation. So, if the local
people are not benefiting from such projects then who is benefiting? Perhaps, the landowners
and large farmers, industrialists and few urban centers.

(A) Define the term 'Reservoir', repeatedly used in the given source?
(B) How has the 'Narmada Bachao Andolan' unified the local population?
(C) Elaborate upon the shortfalls of Dams with respect to India.
36. Two different sets of reasons can be given in favour of power sharing. Firstly, power sharing is
good because it helps to reduce the possibility of conflict between social groups. Since social
conflict often leads to violence and political instability, power sharing is a good way to ensure
the stability of political order. Imposing the will of majority community over others may look
like an attractive option in the short run, but in the long run it undermines the unity of the nation.
Tyranny of the majority is not just oppressive for the minority; it often brings ruin to the
majority as well. There is a second, deeper reason why power sharing is good for democracies.
Power sharing is the very spirit of democracy. A democratic rule involves sharing power with
those affected by its exercise, and who have to live with its effects. People have a right to be
consulted on how they are to be governed.

(A) Mention a prudential reason for power sharing.

(B) Mention one kind of power sharing not found in a democracy but can be commonly seen in a
confederation.
(C) Define Tyranny.
