Manual 1: Creation of project and import of dataset into Datamine Studio RM

1. Creating a new Project

Start the application from the desktop (Datamine Studio RM) or from Start | All Programs |
Datamine | Studio RM. As the software starts, a Datamine License Services window pops-up,
press “Continue”. Now, you can start a “New Project” from the Project button (top left corner)

If the Studio Project Wizard (Welcome ...) dialog is displayed, click Next. Define the project
Name as your Name and Surname. Ensure the “Automatically add files... “ option is selected,
and click Project Settings.
In the Project Settings dialog, “Automatic Project Updates” group, enable the following options
and click OK (leave all other options as they are):

- Detect new files in the project folder....

- Detect files added to or removed from the project folder...
- Automatically update project (no prompts)
In the Studio Project Wizard (Project Properties) dialog, click Next. In the Studio Project Wizard
(Project Files) dialog, click Next. In the Studio Project Wizard (Your project is ready to create)
dialog, click Finish. This project will be used for the remaining exercises in this laboratory.

2. Defining Geological Modeling Settings

In this part of the tutorial you will define conventions, general interface and project settings that
are typically used during the geological modeling process.

In this exercise you will define settings for the following:

 default symbol size for points on strings (0.2mm)

 enable automatic redraw
 drillhole desurvey
 digital terrain modeling
 legends
 evaluation control
 wireframe linking
 Look and Feel.

Setting a Default Symbol Size for Displayed Data

 Ensure the 3D window is displayed.

 Activate the Home ribbon and select Project | Settings
 In the Project Settings dialog, Project Settings list, select Data Display.
 In the right pane, Symbols group, use the Default symbol size: spin buttons to define a
value of 0.2 mm

Enabling Automatic Redraw

 In the Project Settings dialog, select Design.

 In the right pane, Control group, select Enable automatic redraw.

Drillhole Desurvey Settings

 In the Project Settings dialog, select Desurvey Settings.

 In the right-hand pane, define the settings shown below.
Digital Terrain Model Settings

 In the Project Settings dialog, select Digital Terrain Models.

 In the right-hand pane, define the settings shown below.

Legends Settings

 In the Project Settings dialog, select Legends.

 In the right-hand pane, define the settings shown below:
Evaluation Control Settings

 In the Project Settings dialog, select Mine Design.

 In the right-hand pane, define the settings shown below

Wireframe Linking Settings

1. In the Project Settings dialog, select Wireframe Linking.

2. In the right-hand pane, define the settings shown below:
In the Project Settings dialog, click OK.

Look and Feel

1. In the Project Options dialog, choose Environment folder and select Look and Feel.
2. In the right-hand pane, define the Look and Feel as Carbon.
3. Import of dataset into Datamine Studio RM

Files definition:

_vb_collars - collar coordinate, coordinate system, coordination and drilled date data

_vb_surveys - survey measurement depth, survey bearing and dip data

_vb_assays - sample interval start and end depth, Au, Cu and Density assay data

_vb_lithology - sample interval start and end depth, lithology data

_vb_zones - sample interval start and end depth, mineralized zones data.

Browse to and open the folder C:\Database\DMTutorials\Data\VBOP\Text.

Copy the following files:

 _vb_assays.txt
 _vb_collars.txt
 _vb_lithology.txt
 _vb_surveys.txt
 _vb_zones.txt

Paste the files into your new tutorial folder C:\Database\Name Surname.

Importing the Drillhole Files

1. Display the Data control bar and select the Import External Data into the Project
toolbar icon
2. In the Data Import dialog, Driver Category box, select [Text].
3. In the Data Import dialog, Data Type box, select [Tables] and click OK.
4. In the Open Source File (Text) dialog, browse to the folder C:\Database\Name Surname,
and select the file _vb_collars.txt , click Open.

5. In the Text Wizard (1 of 3) dialog, define the settings shown below, and click Next

Data Type: Delimited

Start at Line: 1
Header Row: Selected and a value of "1"

6. In the Text Wizard (2 of 3) dialog, make sure the Comma option is set and confirm that
the data shown in the Preview group is now separated by vertical lines.
7. In the Text Wizard (2 of 3) dialog, click Next.
8. In the Text Wizard (3 of 3) dialog, select each data column in turn in the Preview group
(use the horizontal slider bar to view the fields hidden to the right), define the column
format settings as shown in the table below, and click Finish.

Column Formats:

Name Type Property

BHID Attribute Alpha

XCOLLAR Attribute Numeric
YCOLLAR Attribute Numeric
ZCOLLAR Attribute Numeric
ENDDEPTH Attribute Numeric
REFSYS Attribute Alpha
REFMETH Attribute Alpha
HOLETYPE Attribute Alpha
ENDDATE Attribute Alpha
Special Values:

Absent Data - Leave

blank/unselected
Trace Data - Leave
blank/unselected

9. In the Import Files dialog, Files tab define Table file as 'Collars'.
10. In the Import Fields tab, select all nine check boxes, and click OK.

11. In the Project Files control bar, All Tables (*.dm) folder, check that the new Datamine
file Collars is listed.
12. Right-Click the Project name button and Save.
13. Repeat steps 1-12 for Assays, Lithology, Surveys and Zones. Don’t forget to put
respective Base File Name.
4. Creating Static Drillholes

1. Activate the Sample Analysis ribbon and select the Build Static button
2. In the HOLES3D dialog, Files tab, define the input and output files shown below:

3. In the HOLES3D dialog, Fields tab, ensure that the fields are automatically set as shown
below:
4. In the HOLES3D dialog, Parameters tab, define the settings shown below, and click OK.

5. In the Command control bar, confirm that all checks were successful, and that
desurveying has generated the output file DrillHoles which contains 1048 records:
You can see, that the data validation process identified issues with running the algorithm,
and to proceed further we need to fix these issues.

a) Open Errors file in Assays folder and figure out the problems

b) Open Lithology file is Assays folder and find Borehole VB2675. The problem is “Sample
Overlap”. The depth of the first record should be changed to 2.5m.

c) Find Borehole VB2737. There are two identical records of it from 0 to 1.5m depth.
Delete one of them.
Activate the Sample Analysis ribbon and select the Build Static button again. Press the button
“Restore”. Make sure everything was restored and overwrite the results.

Finally, the DrillHoles file can be drag&dropped to 3D window, and visually inspected using
Navigation Toolbar and DrillHoles Properties.

Click the Project button and Save. Select File | Save.
