Objectives At the end of activity the students are expected to describe the transfer of
energy through the trophic levels (S8LT-lVg-22), specifically:

1. Explain the concept of a species (S8LT-IVg-19)

2. Explain the advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an
ecosystem (S8LT-IVh-21)
Performance Standard The learners should be able to make a poster comparing food choices based on
the trophic levels.
Description Title: "Food Chain Buffet: Exploring Trophic Levels through Food Choices"

1. Students (individual) in this course will design a poster using actual food
items to represent different organisms at various trophic levels within an
ecosystem.

Instruction 1. Familiarize yourself with the concept of trophic levels and how energy flows
through an ecosystem.
2. Collect the necessary materials for your poster, including:
a. You can use any of the following: Poster board, large paper, rectangular
plate, banana leaves or anything that you can you use as base.
b. Food items representing different trophic levels (e.g., fruits, vegetables,
candies, crackers, etc.)
3. Plan Your Poster: layout and design of your poster. Consider how you will
visually represent each trophic level using food items.
4. Select a variety of food items to represent organisms at different trophic
levels within an ecosystem. Be creative! For example, you could use:
Producers (plants): Fruits, vegetables
Primary consumers (herbivores): Carrot sticks, celery sticks
Secondary consumers (carnivores): Candy, crackers with cheese
Decomposers: Bread or crackers (to represent detritus), chocolate syrup (to
represent decomposer activity)
5. Arrange your food items on the poster board according to their trophic
levels. Use glue or tape to secure them in place.
6. Use markers or colored pencils to add labels and illustrations to your poster,
identifying each trophic level and the organisms represented.
7. Include additional information on your poster to explain the concept of
trophic levels and how energy flows through an ecosystem. Label each trophic
level and provide brief descriptions of the organisms found at each level.
Add arrows or lines to show the direction of energy transfer between trophic
levels.
8. Once you have completed your trophic levels poster using food, please take
two pictures. The first picture should be of your completed poster, capturing it
in its entirety and ensuring that all the food items are clearly visible. The second
picture should include you, the student, standing next to your poster.
