Dynamic Analysis of a Four Bar Linkage
Objective:
To study about the kinematics of a four-bar linkage mechanism with a crank-follower configuration
using the Rigid Dynamics module in ANSYS Workbench
Problem Statement:
A four-bar linkage mechanism with links composed of aluminium alloy material is subjected
to a rotation at crank end. Do simulation on ANSYS Workbench for Rigid Dynamic analysis
and then visualize and study the results obtained from dynamic analysis.
Input Data:
(Use the apparatus data)
Assumptions:
We assumed “Aluminium Alloy” as a material for the links of mechanism with the standard properties
set by default. Our units are of metric system.
Procedure:
1. Firstly, start with ANSYS Rigid Dynamics.
2. Define the bars’ material and specify its properties.
3. Open the Space Claim Geometry Editor and create an assembly of four bars.
4. Open the Setup and define the connections for the assembly. Four connections are
required for the four ends of connecting links.
5. Then go into meshing and define the mesh.
6. In the boundary conditions, define the joint loads in the form of angular velocity.
7. Define the step controls accordingly for the analysis.
8. Import the required solution options.
9. Then in numerical results, we obtained results of displacement, velocity and
acceleration from it.
10. Then evaluate the results with the help of tabular data.

Analytical Solution:
ANSYS Workbench is a computer-aided engineering (CAE) software that includes a module
for static structural analysis. Static structural analysis in ANSYS Workbench involves the use
of finite element analysis (FEA) to determine the behavior of a structure under static loads.
To perform a static structural analysis in ANSYS Workbench, the user must first define;
The software then divides the structure into small elements and solves the equations of
motion to determine the stress, strain, and displacement at each point.
The results of the analysis can be visualized using ANSYS Workbench's post-processing
tools, which allow the user to view the stress and strain distribution throughout the structure,
identify potential failure modes, and optimize the design to improve the structure's
performance and safety.
2. Engineering Data
Change the material to Aluminum Alloy
3. Geometry
From Solid Works made a diagram of 4 Bar linkage.
4. Setup
There’s no need of meshing here. So we directly apply our Joints and move them in our required
directions and Also add the deformations
5. Motion
After running animation we can see that our mechanism is oscillating. From here we
can also find the deformation in our object.
