KIND OF INSTALLATION

The unit will be delivered in SCHOTTEL standard tunnel length. It will be welded into
the hull of the vessel with a vertical power input flange arrangement. The thruster with
it’s direct connection to the vessel could be defined as a part of the vessel’s hull.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

TRANSVERSE TUNNEL:

The transverse tunnel is made of shipbuilding steel grade A of welded construction.


In way of the propeller, a stainless steel wear ring is provided.

Zinc anodes as protection against corrosion of the bow thruster unit are mounted on the
tunnel wall and on the cover of the lower gearbox. This protection is designed for a
protection period of 2 years basing on the standard tunnel length. Anode protection for
the tunnel parts which are not scope of supply of SCHOTTEL is not delivered.

Important Remark to be respected by the Shipyard:


To ensure sufficient protection we recommend to add an anode mass of 3.0 kg per
1000 mm length on the tunnel parts which has to be delivered by the shipyard.
Furthermore sufficient anodes have to be installed on the fore ship to protect the hull.
If these anodes to protect fore ship and tunnel extension are missing, then the anodes
delivered with the tunnel thruster serve as only protection for the complete fore ship.
This means that these anodes will disappear within only a few months and then the
thruster itself will serve as anode which can lead in short time to severe damage of the
transverse thruster unit. This point must absolutely be respected!

Tunnel thickness of the thrusters is 20 mm.

The transverse tunnel is fitted with a welded in flange for fastening the underwater gear
and a welded on seating for the drive motor.

This flange is connected on both sides laterally to 2 stiffening rings and to a central
supporting ring. The outer stiffening rings are bigger in diameter and are flat on the
bottom side which allows an easy installation to the ship´s structure.
Moreover the foundation of the electric motor is equipped with radial mounting recesses
for the erection of oil pipe connection lines.

The support arm of the underwater gear housing to the tunnel is welded in. It is part of
SCHOTTEL scope of supply.

For easier welding of the supplied tunnel into the vessel, the tunnel ends are prepared
with the appropriate welding angles. 2)

BOW THRUSTER GEAR UNIT:


The housing of the lower gearbox is manufactured from high quality cast iron GGG 40
and contains the bevel gear transmission.
The precision bevel gears are made from high quality steel, case hardened and recut or
grinded after hardening. This results in a highly accurate tooth profile which ensures
perfect matching of the bevel gear set and a high safety factor against contact stress.

The propeller shaft is made from high tensile steel and runs in roller bearing.

All running surfaces of shafts, flanges etc. are coated with wear and corrosion resistant
material.

The sealing of the shafting is achieved through radial shaft sealing rings. Sealing rings
which come in contact with seawater are made from high grade special stainless steel
ring.

The propeller shaft contains the necessary components for pitch control. At the forward
end the hydraulic rotary block is fitted for oil transmission to the hub for pitch control.
The hub itself is arranged at the other end of the shaft. The cylinder in the hub transfers
axial movement into the pitch angle setting. The position of the blades is mechanically
transferred to the forward end of the propeller shaft, where a mechanical linkage passes
through the lower gearbox to the top plate-mounted pitch indicator.

LUBRICATION:
Lubrication is ensured by an oil bath lubrication. The cooling of oil is effected by heat
dissipation in the lower gearbox to the running water.

The separate oil header tank with level gauge is equipped with a level switch for the
alarm indication 'oil level too low' to be connected to the warning unit which is supplied
by the electric prime mover’s supplier (Power supply voltage for the sensor: 24 V DC).

Note : This oil header tank has to be installed by the yard 1 meter above the loaded
waterline.

On the lower gear unit two connection flanges for the pipes to the oil header tank are
foreseen.

Connections between oil header tank and lower gear unit are not scope of SCHOTTEL
supply.

PROPELLER BLADE LAYOUT:


As basis for our propeller layout the following data have to be provided by the designer
or shipyard :

- inlet of tunnel conical, cone depth XX mm


- inlet of tunnel rounded, radius XX mm
- with inlet protection grid (delivered by the shipyard) / without grid
- angle of frame in bow thruster area: XXX°
- angle of waterline in bow thruster area: XXX°
- distance between centreline of tunnel and waterlineXXXX mm
( recommendation : 1.5 x D of propeller )
- distance between centreline of tunnel and keel XXXX mm
( recommendation : 1.5 x D of propeller )

ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM

SCHOTTEL PROPELLER BLADE PITCH CONTROLLING SYSTEM

Function:
This is a way-dependent full follow up electro-hydraulic controlling system.

The propeller thrust can be directed by turning the CP-control handle to the desired
direction (starboard/portside). The electronic control compares the pre-setting with the
actual pitch of the propeller blades and transmits a signal corresponding to the
differential angle to the hydraulic. If the pre-setting angle is equal to the pitch of the
propeller blades the control will be aligned.

The proportional control system works in such a way that with small turns of the CP-
control handle the corresponding steering speed is low and with bigger turns of the
handle the steering speed is higher. Thus the steering speed is proportionally regulated
by the steering angle.

The propeller blade position is indicated via an electric feed-back system by a thrust
direction indicator. The thrust direction is also shown by a mechanical indicator on the
tunnel thruster.

The hydraulic power pack for CP control is consisting of:


- 2 electrically driven hydraulic-pumps
- 1 valve assembly with additional hand lever
- 1 oil filter with pollution switch
- 1 pressure switch

The hydraulic components will be supplied loose for installation by the yard.
Flexible hose connections are provided by SCHOTTEL on the a. m. components.
SCHOTTEL installations for hydraulic systems have to be observed.
Note : The hydraulic aggregate has to be installed in a horizontal position so that
the filter element is situated vertically.
The power of the electric motor for the hydraulic pump is rated at approx. 3 kW for a
voltage supply of 440 V and 60 Hz.

ELASTIC COUPLING:

An elastic coupling is fitted between the power input shaft of the tunnel thruster and the
electric prime mover (form of construction: V1) which is mounted directly on the top of
the thruster unit.

INTERFACES ELECTRIC SYSTEM

Interfaces for manual integrated joystick and DPS 2 systems will be delivered.

COATING AND PAINT STRUCTURE

The thruster tunnel will be sandblasted and coated with anticorrosive primer. The lower
gearbox will be sandblasted and coated with BELZONA 1321 ( Ceramic S-metal ), with
extremely high resistance against abrasion; cavitation and electrolytic corrosion :

Lower gearbox : sand blasting SA 2 ½ DIN 55928

QUALITY ASSURANCE

SCHOTTEL provides a quality assurance system in accordance with DIN ISO 9001
certified by GL, ABS, BV and DNV. The thruster system will be supplied with a
SCHOTTEL works certificate.

Tightening order
If screw connections are arranged over the
circumference of a part, then the tightening is to be
carried out in several steps, according to the order 1

liquid bonding agent.
Secured connections must be detachable with normal
tools without heat treatment.

In case of screw / nut connections up toM16, the liquid


bonding agent is to be applied to the first engaging turns
of the screw thread (2/1); in case of thread sizes > M16
onto both joining pieces. 1

5. Level the outline by grinding and renew the paint
coat according to the corresponding specification.

1 Conduits

General

hydraulic circuit diagram is allowed to be used.

Cold bending of pipes


Cold bending is only allowed with the according pipe
bending device such that there is no contraction of the
cross section.

! ATTENTION
Prior to bending it is required to pay attention that the
tail end of the pipe protruding into the joint shall have a
minimum length of 2 time the nut height, see Figure 1.

For pipes with a Ø of 6 to approx. 25 mm (depending on

the wall thickness) manual bending devices are avail-


able.
For larger diameters and wall thickness machine equip-
ment is to be used.

Cutting pipes to length
After bending the pipes are cut rectangular to length
(Fig. 2, max. 1/2_ deviation of angle).
This is facilitated by a sawing--off device.

! ATTENTION
Pay attention again that the tail end of the pipe remains
with sufficient length (= 2x h)!
For cutting the pipes do not use pipe cutters, otherwise
the pipe wall is cut biased and with it a strong gener-
ation of burrs.

After sawing the pipes off, deburr the tail ends (Figure
3), about 0.2 mm x 45_ at the inner and outer edge, and
are rinsed with degreaser. 0.2 x 45_

If possible, mount completed pipes immediately; in


case the pipes (short time) have to be stored it is re-
quired to close both tail ends with plastic caps (do not
use cleaning wool or other fuzzy material). 0.2 x 45_

Empty the pipe after bending and leave it deposited for

Reducing adapters
In practice it showed that on site metric or identical di-
mensions of pipes are not always existing.
In order to obtain a good connection is spite of that,
”reducing joints” can be used,
or it is possible to make ”reducing joints directly inside
the pipe”.

Reducing joints
There are several versions of reducing joints.
At one side there is a metric pipe Ø OD (4/1), at the
other side another pipe Ø OD (4/3), whether metric
(mm) nor inch (”), depending on requirement. 1 2 3
This way, the joint (4/2) can be connected at one side
with the pipe supplied by SCHOTTEL, and at the other
side with the pipe available on site.
In comparison with welded connections, these connec-
tions have the following advantages:
− Same way of mounting as in case of standard
joints
− Removable
− No rework after mounting contrary to welded con-
nections

Reducing adapters directly inside the pipe


In case matching reducing joints are not available, it is
also possible to join pipe tail ends with different outside
pipe diameters by welding. 1 2
For this process it is important the inside pipe diameter
does not form an obstruction for the oil flow.
The following points are to be observed:

D The pipe tail end with the smaller outside diameter


has to be bevelled on the inside (5/1).
D The pipe ends should fit into each other as tight as Ø

Fastening of conduits
For fastening the conduits it is required to use slightly
dampening or flexibly bedded pipe clamps.
Meticulous installation of the conduits reduces noises
and vibrations and increases the reliability.
For recommended distance between the pipe clamps OD
in dependence on the outside pipe diameter, see Fig-
ure 6 and the following table.

2 Hose Lines

General
Usually, all required hose lines are included in the
scope of supply of SCHOTTEL propulsions.
If additional hoses are required the following recom-
mendations are to be observed:

D The appropriate hose material is to be selected ac-


cording to pressure, pressure medium, tempera-
ture, dynamic load resistance and to the low in-
flammability regulations.

D For calculating the length of new hoses it is re-


quired to take bending radius and possibly rigid fit-
tings into consideration.

D After incorporation, the hose lines are to be rinsed


with hot water, to be blown through, and after dry-
ing both tail ends are to be closed.

Placing of hose lines

NOTE
The system drawing indicates the minimum radius for
the hoses supplied by SCHOTTEL.

During installation it is required to pay attention that the


hose line is not submitted to torsion (8/1). 1
Under load there might be a change in length of a hose
line. Decrease in length signifies an additional tensile
stress of hose and connections.
Therefore, the hose line must be slightly sagging (8/2)
in unpressurised condition.
Do only tighten the swivel nuts until the connection is
tight. Further tightening does not improve tightness but 2
damages the connection.

When bended during installation, the admissible bend-
ing radius is to be observed.
Sharp bends are to be avoided (Figure 9).
For calculating the length of a hose line which is to be
installed curved, it is to be observed that the connecting
fittings are not flexible. Therefore, the correct dimen-
sioning of the free hose length between the fittings is
essential.

For an appropriate installation of hose lines, fittings are


available with connecting angles of 30_, 45_ and 90_.
This ensures that the installation is carried out accord-
ing to specification also in case of confined installation
conditions.

Elbows are to be used also where the arrangement of
the connections do not allow a ”sagging” bend, and with
a ”standing” bend there is the danger of kinking behind
the hose mounting (Figure 11).
Use the required holding devices of the correct size.
The hose must not rub inside the holding device but
also must not be squeezed in.
Use holding devices encompassing the hose.

When connecting a hose end directly with a conduit, it


is required to mount a hose clamp (Figure 12) immedi-
ately after the joint.

3 Threaded Joints

General

Cutting ring joint to DIN 386110


Preassembly
1. Lubricate cutting ring and the thread of coupling
and swivel nut well with oil (do not grease).

NOTE
Oiling can be left out in case of galvanised threaded
joints with clear antifriction coating.
2. Slide the swivel nut on and then the cutting ring
with the cutting side towards the pipe tail end (Fig-
ure 13).

NOTE
If the ring cannot be slid over the tail end or only with
difficulty, then reduce the pipe tail end with a file, and
clean the pipe again carefully!

3. Insert the pipe tail end into the joint (14/3) until feel-
ing it making contact and slide the cutting ring
(14/2) up to the threaded joint.
4. Screw the swivel nut (14/1) down by hand until
feeling it making contact with the cutting ring, hold- 1
ing the pipe end rectangular in the process.
5. Press the pipe end tightly against the limit stop in
the inside cone, and tighten the swivel nut with ap-
prox. 3/4 of a turn. 2

! ATTENTION
The pipe must not turn. 3

NOTE
The spanner should have about 15 times the length of
the span of the jaw (if required, extend it using a pipe)
A line marked on the swivel nut facilitates to observe the
prescribed tightening angle.

When tightened, the cutting ring takes hold of the pipe


after which further pressing is no longer needed.
The final tightening is carried out by tightening the 1
swivel nut again by approx. 3/4 of a turn. In this process,
the ring cuts into the pipe and generates in front of its
cutting edge a visible collar (15/1).
After the final tightening, loosen the swivel nut and
check if the generated collar completely fills the space
in front of the cutting edge. Otherwise retighten briefly
again.
It does not matter if the cutting ring can be turned on the
pipe end.

Threaded joint with cutting ring and DSW--sealing
The threaded joint is of the same design as the single
cutting ring joint. 1
The difference is in the elastomer sealing ring (16/1) be-
fore the cutting ring, which is used for primary sealing.
On supply, the sealing ring is bonded with the cutting
ring.
Mounting is carried out the same way, only checking the
collar in front of the cutting edge is a bit more difficult be-
cause of the additional sealing.
In case of need, the elastomer sealing ring can be re-
placed without problems.

This joint is compatible with the cutting ring joints.
It consists of a welded neck (17/3) with swivel nut (17/2)
and the connecting piece (17/4). 1 2
The welded neck has a conical end of 24_.
The sealing towards the connecting piece is provided
with an O--ring (17/1) at the conical end.
The joint can be mounted without further preparation.
Attention has to be paid that the conical end is not
crushed by positioning it crooked inside the coupling.

Elbows and T--pieces are provided with non--remov--


able swivel nuts.
For this, the swivel nut (18/2) is fixed at the conical end
with a retaining ring (18/1).

! ATTENTION
Observe the correct tightening moment! 2
If such a swivel nut is tightened too much, the retaining
ring can break and the connection becomes leaky.

Prior to mounting it is required to lubricate the cone end,
the outside thread of the connecting neck and the in-
side thread of the swivel nut.
For steel version use hydraulic oil, for stainless steel
antifriction paste.
The correct tightening torque can be obtained with a
torque wrench, or with the according turning angle (rec-
ommended).

4 Flange Joints

General
For systems submitted to high loads are used flange
joints to SAE -- J518c.
The joints are available in the sizes of 1/2” up to 5”, this
corresponds to a pipe diameter of approx. 25 -- 140
mm.
Hose lines are supplied with the matching flange.
The devices are fitted with the according connecting
areas.

Pipes have to be fitted with SAE flanges.


There are different versions available.

D SAE welding flange (Figure 19)


In case of the welding flange the chamfered pipe is
butt--welded.

In this case the welding flange is pushed into the pipe
up to contact and is then welded at the collar.

! ATTENTION
After welding, the inside of the pipe is to be cleaned
from welding beads and scale.
After installation of the piping and termination of all
works, the entire system is to be rinsed, see SCHOT-
TEL Instructions 1100933.

D SAE threaded flange (Figure 21) 1
In case of the threaded flange, the pipe end is screwed
with Loctite 577 into the flange (21/1), or screwed onto
the outside thread (21/2) of the flange.
Sealing between SAE flange and connecting area is
provided with an O--ring.

5 Sealing and Securing Material

Base for all threaded joints and connections is that the


pre--load force or tightening moment sufficiently pro-
tects the connection against loosening.
The use of tightening and securing material such as
Loctite, DELO, etc. is to be considered as an addition,
specifically there where increased security is de-
manded.
The bonding materials prevent loosening of the con-
nection to a large extend, simultaneously providing an
additional sealing.
The use is specifically appropriate for those systems
where couplings are no longer accessible after mount-
ing.
Do only use bonding material classified as medium
strong securing materials.
Connections, which are secured with such material,
can be detached again with normal tools.

General instructions for use


D Threads must be clean and free from oil and
grease.
D Shake the container well and apply the securing
material to the first engaging turns (the very first
turn remains free!).
D In case of thread sizes up to 1/2 ” do only apply to
outside threads;
> 1/2 ” onto both joining pieces
D Mount the joints and tighten according to prescrip-
tion.
D After about 24h the hardening process is com-
pleted and the joint is fully resistant.

6 Final Mounting

After all pipes are pre--mounted with cutting--ring joints,


hoses, etc., the system can be completed.
During final mounting of the joints and later in the re-
peated mounting (each time after a connection was de-
tached), the tightening of the nut has to be carried out
without spanner extension and without increased ap-
plication of force.
While tightening the swivel nut during final mounting of
joints in free lines, the coupling is to be retained with a
second spanner (Figure 22).

! ATTENTION
When filling in oil, pay attention to utmost cleanliness.
Also for new oil an according filling filter is to be used.

After mounting it is required to carry out a pressure test


for tightness.
In joints show leaks, tighten the swivel nut only until the
connection is tight.
Further tightening might damage the connection.
Finally, the entire system is to be rinsed, see SCHOT-
TEL Instructions 1100933.

Preservation Instructions

The preservation takes place at the manufacturing SCHOTTEL Hydraulic Systems

This documentation contains information about coating underwater components. Ferrous cast parts and steel parts
that come into contact with petroleum are coated according to the following standard coating system.

Preparing the Substrate for the Primer Coat


Before coating, the substrate should be prepared according to SCHOTTEL Specification SNQ-602 (cast steel GS)
or SNQ-603 (spheroidal graphite iron GGG and GGG + Ni)

Before applying the final coat, thoroughly clean parts with HAKU 1025-800 cold degreaser (KLUTHE/ID
no. 1017753), leaving no residue.
Then rinse off the cleaned parts using fresh water.
Always observe applicable technical bulletins and safety data sheets.
When retouching damage to the coating system, ensure that individuals layers are structured the same as intact
surfaces. The HEMPEL system can be used without any modifications as a repair coat on the old KZA or EGA
system, etc.

This documentation contains information about coating underwater components. Steel components that come into
contact with petroleum are coated according to the following standard coating system.

Preparing the Substrate for the Primer Coat


The surfaces must be prepared for the paint coat according to DIN 8200 “Abrasive Blasting Technology”.
According to sec. 3.2 of DIN 8200, the surfaces should be treated by either compressed air blasting (sec. 2.1.1) or
centrifugal blasting (sec. 2.2).
The use of liquid carriers or liquid blasting agents is not permitted.
The surfaces must have a degree of cleaning of Sa 2 1/2 according to DIN 55928, part 4.

D Use the material listed above and retouch the primer to the specified layer thickness.

NOTE
Before applying the final coat, thoroughly clean parts with HAKU 1025-800 cold degreaser (KLUTHE/ID
no. 1017753), leaving no residue.
Then rinse off the cleaned parts using fresh water.
Always observe applicable technical bulletins and safety data sheets.
When retouching damage to the coating system, ensure that individuals layers are structured the same as intact
surfaces. The HEMPEL system can be used without any modifications as a repair coat on the old KZA or EGA
system, etc.

The SCHOTTEL Transverse Thrusters, in the following


called STT, are thoroughly examined prior to leaving
the works. With this examination the reliable perfor−
mance is ensured.

Power transmission

flexible drive shaft onto the bevel gear pair (1/11).
From there, the driving power is transmitted onto the
propeller shaft (1/8) and the CP propeller (1/7). 7

The lubricants to be used for this system are listed in
the SCHOTTEL instructions 1145140.

Oil quantities

The oil quantitie depends on the version of the


system.
For the version of your system please, see the
Technical Specifications or the drawing included in
the spare parts catalogue. The oil quantities are
reference values.
For reserves we recommend approx. 10% of the
indicated oil quantity
The supply conduits installed in the dock yard are not
considered.

Draining the oil (STT outside the water)

6. Let the used oil drain completely into the


collecting bowl.

7. Check the locking screw if abrasion is sticking to


the magnet.
Fine abrasion is normal during the run--in period
of new or repaired systems.
Rough abrasion indicates major wear or
damage. In this case it is required to check the
system and have it repaired, if necessary.

8. Clean the locking screw, replace the sealing and
screw down the locking screw oiltight.

The STT is to be filled with oil again to avoid

Replacing the filter element
An appropriate collecting bowl of sufficient capacity
must be available for the used oil.
1. Switch the system off and secure against
unintended start.

2. Have the collecting bowl ready (18/3).

3. Unscrew the filter globe (18/2) and clean it using


an appropriate medium.

4. Pull the filter element off downward with light 1


to--and--fro motions and replace by a new or
cleaned filter element.

according to the instructions of the manufacturer.
5. Check the O--ring (18/1) of the filter casing and
element seat for damage and replace, if

7. Screw the filter casing (19/3) back down up to


limit stop into the filter head (19/2), then
loosening it again by 1/8 to 1/2 turn.

element it is required to deaerate the hydraulic oil
circuit with the hydraulic driving station CP.

Checking the underwater subassemblies

With the STT dismounted, or the ship is slipped, the


following works are to be carried out:

1. Check the propeller for damage.

2. Check wear of the anodes (22/1) on the lower
gear--box and on the tunnel, and replace if
required.

! ATTENTION

In case of major propeller damages there is the


danger of tooth breakage inside the gear--boxes.
With used--up anodes there is the danger of
corrosion.

3. Check all sealings (22/3) of the lower gear--box


for emerging oil.

4. Check the gap (22/2) between propeller hub and


lower gear--box for emerging oil and foreign
bodies.
The gap must be free from foreign substances;
if required the propeller is to be dismounted, the
foreign substances to be removed and the
sealings to be checked.

5. Check the tight seat of all fastening screws of the 1
lower gear--box and of the protective grating.

6. Check the condition of the antifouling paint coat


and retouch, if required. 3

Strong damages of the antifouling paint coat indicate


external influences that might result in major
damages.

5 Storage, Shut--down and Transport

Storage and shut--down


During storage or shut--down, the lower gear--box
(24/2) is to be filled with new oil to avoid corrosion 1 2
damages.
The propeller (24/1) has to be turned several times
by hand at least once per month.
The lower--gear box is to be continuously checked for
condensation.
It is required to provide for pressure compensation in
the lower gear--box; see SCHOTTEL instructions
1099236.
If the lower gear--box is submitted to vibrations
during standstill, e.g. during storage on a ship etc.,
then it is to be fastened to avoid bearing damages.

! ATTENTION

For storage and shut--down for more than 6 months


it is required to consult SCHOTTEL. Figure 24

Transport
The oil has to be drained off the STT prior to
transport.
For the weight of your system or the weights of the 1 1
individual subassemblies please, see the dispatch
papers.
The STT is to be fastended only at the previewed
lifting eyes (25/1). If required, a crosshead is to be
used to avoid damage to the subassemblies.

! CAUTION
It is prohibited to remain under suspended loads. Do
only use lifting gears of sufficient carrying capacity.

Assembly of the flexible elements and
the retaining cap

The flexible saddle elements can be fitted after the


coupling has been aligned. The flexible saddle ele-
ments must be inserted in such a way that the rubber
packets are covered by the coupling claws over the
entire length. The rubber membrane which serves to
fix the saddle elements axially, and which is on the
front side of the saddle elements, should lie between
the coupling claw and the hub flange. MMS and MMS -- A

1. Controllable pitch propeller hub


The controllable pitch propeller hub with 4 blades presents a high-pressure pitch control system whe
pitch control mechanism of which is accommodated in the propeller hub. The hub housing (1) is
connected to the hub coupling of the propeller shaft by means of eight blade fastening bolts (19) and
four hub precision bolts (15). Setting yoke (2) with the cylinder covers (3, 4) and piston (10) act as
servomotor. Slide-piece (11) and the radial guide groove in bearing plate (6) act as crank guide which
transforms the longitudinal motion of setting yoke (2) into rotary motion of bearing plate (6) and the
propeller blade (41) mounted on it.

Piston (10) is mounted to the bottom of the hub housing (1) by means of nut (12) and adjusting
rings (9). The setting yoke is lead between the bearing plates (6) along the slide bars (22) and
slide-pieces (11). The rear cylinder cover (3) seals the cylinder space on the piston (10). This sealing is
realised by a thrust rod packing (28) and PTFE-guide band (20). The fore and aft cylinder space
(a, b) are separated from each other by the piston (10) and sealed by means of a piston packing (27)
and two guide band (16).

The bearing plates (6) are rotably mounted in the bores in hub housing (1) for the propeller
blades (41). They are fastened to the bearing plates (6) by means of 6 blade fastening bolts (13),
made of sea-water-proof material, and 2 blade precision bolts (14). The blade fastening bolts (13) are
secured by locking plates (23) welded to them which connect two bolt heads each with each other.
O-ring (29) prevents sea water from entering the hub and lubrication oil from emerging out of the hub
at the propeller blades (41). Nut (12) is protected against sea water by the propeller cone (1).

The separating line between these two parts is sealed by means of O-ring (31). The hub has been
statically balanced. The balancing weights (18) are mounted onto the bearing plates (6). To ensure
complete charging of the cylinder spaces (a, b) with hydraulic oil, non-return valves (5) are arranged in
piston (10). (The procedure of bleeding the air is described in point 3.)

In hub housing (1) a bore for discharging the residual oil from the hub while performing assembly
works has been provided. This bore is closed by means of a screw plug (17) and provided with a seal.

2. Oil delivery
Via forced oil supply unit (47) being arranged movably on sleeve (44) of the oil supply unit the amount
of hydraulic oil necessary for adjustment of the propeller blades (41) is delivered with the required
pressure through the tubes (48, 49) into the cylinder spaces (a, b) in the hub. The oil supply unit is
carried and guided in the quill propeller shaft. It is flanged to the fore cylinder cover (4).
O-rings (24, 25) effect sealing of the hydraulic circuits against each other. Sleeve (44) which takes the
forced oil supply unit (47) is connected via cover (45) which takes the forced oil supply unit (47) is
connected via cover (45) with the outside tube (48) and sleeve (46). The inside tube (49) is inserted in
sleeve (46) and sealed. To ensure passage of the lubricating oil to the hub, the outside tube (48) has
been spot faced in the guideway area. The inside tube (49) is centred in the outside tube (48) by guide
(43).

The oil supply unit rotates together with the propeller shaft and performs a translatory motion together
with setting yoke (2). Also the actual pitch of the propeller blades (41) is read on the oil supply unit
which is then transferred to the actual-pitch transmitter of the remote control unit.

3. Charging and bleeding the pitch control unit


After the unit has been completely assembled, first charge hydraulic oil into the high-pressure pitch
control system via the oil supply unit and bleed the air from it via the hub. Charging and bleeding of the
pitch control system may be done when the unit does not rotate. For this purpose it is necessary to
move the hub into that position in which propeller blade 1 is in upright position (Take notice of the mark
on the hub housing!). Air is bled from the pitch control unit by running the unit to an end position
against stop (3). By displacing the pitch adjusting cylinder against stop (3 ) a non-return valve (5) in
piston (10) is opened and cylinder space a is connected with cylinder space b. Bleeding of the other
cylinder space takes place by displacing the pitch adjustment cylinder against the other stop (4).
This procedure must be repeated approximately 10 times until all air has been bled from the unit. After
all air has been bled from the pitch control system, lubricating oil has to be filled into the hub.
