1.0 INTRODUCTION
C.B. & Associates Inc. (CBA) was contracted by Guyana Shore Base Incorporated (GYSBI) to undertake
subsurface investigation for the design of a sheet pile jetty at Eccles, East Bank Demerara. The purpose of
the investigation is to establish representative geotechnical parameters for the jetty design. The subsurface
investigation consisted of:

I. Soil exploration and sampling via three (3) boreholes to 30m deep or refusal, including standard
penetration testing (SPT); and
II. Two (2) Cone penetrating tests (CPT) to refusal.

This report presents the results of the geotechnical investigation inclusive of the boring logs and CPT data.
The laboratory test results for all samples collected will be presented in the final geotechnical investigation
report.

1.1 Local Geological Conditions

Guyana is dominated by plateau landforms. The western and southern parts of the country are relatively high
in terrain and gently dips to the northeast. The Mesozoic and Cenozoic Paleogene-Neoprene alluvial
formations are covered by the central and western regions. Georgetown, which is the capital city and the
region within which the sub-surface investigation was performed is located in the northeast of Guyana and
belongs to the Low Coastal Plain area. This area is covered by Quaternary sediments formed by the
Demerara River and its tributaries. The sediments are mainly composed of the Neogene Demerara Clays
and the early Coropina Clay layers. The thickness gradually increases from west to east, and the newly
deposited Layers of Demerara clay and modern sedimentary clays form part of the coast.

The quaternary alluvial deposits in Georgetown are thick, according to the age, burial conditions, distribution
laws, and other engineering geological characteristics of the soil layer. The topography of the soil distribution
in the area is black humus soil layer I3, grey-black to grey muck layer II, grey to grey-white clay layer III, and
grey-white medium-fine sand layer IV1, in which the soft soil layer is the I3 humus soil layer and grey muck
layer II muck layer. The thickness of the humus soil layer is typically 1.80m to 5.30m, and the thickness of
the muck layer is 0.90m to 12.80m

1.2 Location of Boreholes

The location of the proposed jetty is at Eccles, East Bank Demerara as shown in the Google Earth image
below with the location of each borehole is indicated in Figure 1.

1.3 Scope of Sub-surface Investigation

The objective of the geotechnical investigation was to establish representative soil parameters, to be used in
the jetty design at Eccles. The services provided by CBA under the contract can be summarized as follows:

(a) Two (2) Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) to a maximum depth of 30m or refusal, whichever comes
first.
(b) The drilling of three (3) boreholes to a depth of 30m or refusal, whichever comes first, and the sub-
surface exploration via the following testing protocols:
• In-situ Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) in accordance with ASTM D1586;
• Undisturbed sampling using Shelby tubes;
• Hydrometer tests in accordance with ASTM D7928;
• Atterberg Limits determination, in accordance with ASTM D4318;
• Specific gravity tests, in accordance with ASTM D854;
• Triaxial Tests, in accordance with ASTM D2850

2.0 GENERAL APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY

2.1 SPT Operation

Using the wash boring drilling method, the Consultant
advanced boreholes #1, #2, and #3 on July 2, July 5,
and July 6, 2021, respectively to conduct standard
penetration tests (SPT). Boreholes #1, #2, and #3 were
advanced to depths of 23.56m, 23.91m, and 18.06m
respectively. Unfortunately, borehole #3 was aborted
prematurely because of the presence of live electrical
wiring near the borehole location.

SPTs were recorded at approximately 1.5m intervals

below the soil surface, using an automatic hammer, to
establish the undrained shear strength profile of the
soil. Disturbed soil samples were collected from each
borehole to conduct soil classification according to the
Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). The
classification will be done using the laboratory test
results from the Atterberg Limits (Liquid Limit, Plastic
Limit, and Plasticity Index). Figure 2:The automatic hammer being used to conduct
SPT
Shelby tubes were used to collect undisturbed samples
throughout the full depth of the boreholes. The undisturbed soil samples will be used to determine the soil
shear strength and compressibility parameters through laboratory tests. The Mohr-Coulomb shear strength
envelope will be established using the Unconsolidated-Undrained (UU) triaxial compression test. The one-
dimensional consolidation test will be used to determine the compression index (Cc) and preconsolidation
pressure (Pc), which are needed for settlement computations. Laboratory testing for soil physical properties
will be conducted at LINMINE Soils Laboratory, a reputable laboratory in Guyana.

2.2 CPT Operation

CPT was conducted on July 10, 2021. The MC-23 Rotary Drill Rig (TMG, USA) was the primary field
equipment used to execute the CPT. The MC-23 equipment is state-of-the-art, automated, and is augmented
with a software component that allows easy data collection and logging. The MC-23 provides a maximum

push force of 20 tons for the

advancement of the cones into
the soil. In operation, the MC-23
measurements were made by
driving a cone penetrometer
attached to a series of rods into
the ground at a constant. As the
cone was driven into the ground,
a continuous measurement of the
resistance to penetration of the
cone and of the surface sleeve
was recorded.
Figure 3: MC-23 rig being used to conduct CPT
The cone penetrometer used
consisted of a cone, filter, and friction sleeve as depicted in Figure 4. The cone measures the cone
resistance. The total force acting on the cone divided by the
projected area of the cone produces the cone resistance. The
cone used had a base section of 10cm2 and an angle of 60
degrees. Behind the cone is a filter for measuring the pore
pressure.

Attached to the cone is the friction sleeve. The total force

acting on the friction sleeve divided by the surface area of the
friction sleeve produces the sleeve resistance. The local
friction on the sleeve is measured by tension load cells
embedded in the sleeve for a distance of 100mm behind the
tip. As the probe is advanced through the soil, the average skin
friction is measured.

3.0 RESULTS
3.1 Boring Log and Stratigraphy
The three boring logs produced from the subsurface investigation are presented in Appendix A of this report.
Generally, the logs show that the topsoil at the site is characterized as a soft grey silty clay, while the lower
layers are described as stiff brown clays. The layers of soft clays, also known as the Demerara clays, overlays
the firmer brown clays of the Coropina formation

3.2 CPT Soil Profiling

The cone penetration test provides a guide to the mechanical characteristics, i.e. strength, stiffness,
compressibility, of the soil. The raw data measurements from the CPTs are presented in Appendix B of this
report. CPT data provides a repeatable index of the aggregate behavior of the in-situ soil in the immediate
area of the probe.

Whilst it was not a requirement by the consultant to process and interpret the data, the CPT data set was
filtered and analyzed using CPeT-IT (by GeoLogismiki), a recognized CPT interpretation software, which
generates 1D, 2D, and tabular datasets for various engineering soil parameters. This prediction of soil type
based on CPT is referred to as Soil Behavior Type (SBT). The boring logs detailing the soil type and soil
parameter estimation from the CPT data for both CPT points are also presented in Appendix B. We have
also included all empirically derived parameters and the governing equations used in CPeT-IT as part of
Appendix B.

3.3 Shear Strength Profile

Two sets of shear strength data were collected based on the investigation: SPT and CPT. A plot of the shear
strength profile based on the data sets is presented in Figure 5. The SPT data was used to determine the
undrained shear strength with energy efficiency of 80 % for the automatic hammer used. The undrained
shear strength (Su) derived from the SPT data was based on correlations between the corrected N'70 values
and the unconfined compressive strength (qu), where Su was taken as half qu. The detailed computations for
Su are given in Appendix C.

The undrained shear strength estimated from the CPT data interpretation was based on the following formula
for which applies only to cohesive soil (SBTn: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 9):

( )
Su =
Where: qt - Corrected cone resistance
- Overburden stress
Nkt - Cone factor
