Commissioning
Blohm + Voss strongly recommends to accomplish the commissioning with the Blohm + Voss Commissioning Service. Read
manual before first use.
OK o Check crew is aware of all possible point of risk danger regarding handling the B+V tool.
Prior to use of the Blohm+Voss Elevator following checks must be carried out :

4. OPERATIONS
WARNING: Observe the elevator continuously while closing to check if the elevator is
properly closed.
WARNING: All warning plates, signs and labels attached to the equipment must be observed.
WARNING: Do never unlatch/open the elevator while a pipe is suspended in the elevator; the
pipe will be lost!
WARNING: Using the elevator with damaged or worn parts can create serious incidents.
WARNING: The picking up of horizontal or tilted pipes is dangerous. This use is not permitted.
Due to the danger it should not be performed by operating personnel. The lifting of vertical
pipes is to be performed carefully and must be monitored.
WARNING: Any modification to the elevator carried out without the approval of Blohm + Voss
will void any warranty.
Safety
and slips/spider so one tool is engaged around the tubular before the other is
disengaged. Thus, one or both tools continuously suspend the tubular during all
stages of pipe handling operations.
16
WARNING: Never open the elevator when the
pipe load is still suspended by the elevator.
OPERATIONS
1. Remove the latch lock assembly (1)
2. Pull the latch (2) against the spring
force. This will open the latch
mechanism.
3. Pull both the elevator halves apart by
using the elevator handles.
4. Now the elevator is open.

5. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION
General
If cracks, excessive wear etc. are
recognised, contact Blohm + Voss Oil
Tools or an authorised service company.
Weldings of the castings should be
done by Blohm + Voss Oil Tools only
or an authorised service company in
accordance to Blohm+Voss welding
procedures.
A regular preventative maintenance
program should be established for all
elevators. These written maintenance
procedures should be given to the crew or
maintenance personnel.
Grease daily 1
All greasing points which are labelled
"Grease daily" must be greased at least
once a day. It can be necessary to carry
this out more often depending on use.
Grease points
1. Grease nipple for hinge pin
2. Spring for locking mechanism
Grease quality
In order to achieve efficient greasing even
at different environmental temperatures,
we recommend the following grease types
should be used (obtainable from Blohm +
Voss Oil Tools):
• Low-Viscosity grease

Daily Inspection Procedures
Maintenance
1. Keep clean.
2. Grease swivel suspension contact surfaces, latch and bore seat surface.
3. Lubricate hinge pin and latch mechanism.
4. Remove any rust and weather protect as required.
5. Check and secure pins and fasteners.
At the same time the worn surface of both, the tool joint and the elevator may
contact on a slight taper which could cause extreme opening forces within the
elevator. That this condition could exist is admittedly rare, but indifference to
wear could allow it to happen, and the result could be a bad accident. Worn or
damaged square shoulder surfaces of elevators are easily corrected by properly
machining these surfaces.
Inspect the collars for squareness, and uniformity and depth of wear. Uneven
wear or worn recesses of 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) or more requires refacing of collar
surface. Hinge Pins and springs should be carefully inspected visually for excess
wear and obvious weakness.
Locking of screws
All Screws are normally secured by a mechanical bolt lock or with a safety wire.
All other screws are secured by metal adhesive (Locktite).

Measuring of Wear
Hinge pins, latch pins and socket holes are not normally measured for wear in
the field. When it becomes apparent that the hinge or latch pins are loosing the
elevator should be dismantled for general engineering check up.
Trouble shooting
In all event where the elevator doesn't function as expected, carry out the following checks to identify the cause of the
problem.
1. Check if all hinge pins are straight.
2. Check for excessive clearance in the elevator; use wear data criteria for checking
3. Check for deformation of parts
4. Ensure all parts are present.
If any failure of any part is detected, remove the elevator from service and have it repaired.
26
Minimum ear dimensions
WARNING: Minimum ear dimensions are only valid when the elevator is in otherwise good
condition, does not have excessive wear, cracks or other defects or previous weld repair
and has not been misused. This inspection criteria can not on their own determine the overall
condition of the elevator and suitability for continued use.
