Operational safety issues

WARNING: Never open the elevator when the pipe load is still suspended by the elevator.

WARNING: Observe the elevator continuously while closing to check if the elevator is
properly closed.

WARNING: All warning plates, signs and labels attached to the equipment must be observed.

WARNING: Do never unlatch/open the elevator while a pipe is suspended in the elevator; the
pipe will be lost!

WARNING: Using the elevator with damaged or worn parts can create serious incidents.

WARNING: The picking up of horizontal or tilted pipes is dangerous. This use is not permitted.
Due to the danger it should not be performed by operating personnel. The lifting of vertical
pipes is to be performed carefully and must be monitored.

WARNING: Any modification to the elevator carried out without the approval of Blohm + Voss
will void any warranty.

Safety

• It is recommended to have the SJ Elevator operated by the driller.

• The driller (and or the floor man) must coordinate operation of the elevator
OPERATIONS

and slips/spider so one tool is engaged around the tubular before the other is
disengaged. Thus, one or both tools continuously suspend the tubular during all
stages of pipe handling operations.

16
WARNING: Never open the elevator when the
pipe load is still suspended by the elevator.

Operation MU (make up)

1. Pick up a section of pipe.
2. Now make up the stand or joint.
3. When the pipe is made up, pick up the
load.
4. Now lower the string.
5. Pick up the weight of the pipe string,
before opening the elevator.
6. Open the elevator and pick up a new
section of pipe.

Operation BO (break out)

1. Pick up the string with the elevator.
2. Pull out the string.
3. Release the stringweight from the
elevator.
4. Now BO the stand or joint.
5. When the pipe is BO, pick up the
stand and handle.

Opening the elevator

OPERATIONS
1. Remove the latch lock assembly (1)
2. Pull the latch (2) against the spring
force. This will open the latch
mechanism.
3. Pull both the elevator halves apart by
using the elevator handles.
4. Now the elevator is open.

Closing the elevator

1. Force the elevator body halves
together using the elevator handles.
2. Check if the latch has snapped into
place properly
3. Secure the latch with the latch lock
assembly
4. Now the elevator is closed.

5. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

General
If cracks, excessive wear etc. are
recognised, contact Blohm + Voss Oil
Tools or an authorised service company.
Weldings of the castings should be
done by Blohm + Voss Oil Tools only
or an authorised service company in
accordance to Blohm+Voss welding
procedures.
A regular preventative maintenance
program should be established for all
elevators. These written maintenance
procedures should be given to the crew or
maintenance personnel.

Grease daily 1
All greasing points which are labelled
"Grease daily" must be greased at least
once a day. It can be necessary to carry
this out more often depending on use.

Grease points
1. Grease nipple for hinge pin
2. Spring for locking mechanism

Grease quality
In order to achieve efficient greasing even
at different environmental temperatures,
we recommend the following grease types
should be used (obtainable from Blohm +
Voss Oil Tools):
• Low-Viscosity grease
MAINTENANCE
& INSPECTION

• Type AVIATICON Grease XRF NGL10 2

Alternatively;
• Use EP1 gear lubricating grease for
greasing ”non-oil tight gear trains”
when temp. < 0°C/32°F.
• Use EP2 when temp. > 0°C/32°F.

PN 671642

20
Daily Inspection Procedures
Maintenance
1. Keep clean.
2. Grease swivel suspension contact surfaces, latch and bore seat surface.
3. Lubricate hinge pin and latch mechanism.
4. Remove any rust and weather protect as required.
5. Check and secure pins and fasteners.

18 degrees Shoulder Elevators

18 degrees shoulder elevators in heavy use will wear under the repeated loads
of the drilling operation. The shoulders gradually become rounded and offer less
supporting area. If this peening of the elevator load - bearing surface is allowed to
continue unchecked long enough, the bore will be reduced by the gradual flow of
metal until the elevator is difficult to close and lock around pipe. Worn or damaged
shoulder surfaces of elevators are easily corrected by properly machining these
surfaces.

At the same time the worn surface of both, the tool joint and the elevator may
contact on a slight taper which could cause extreme opening forces within the
elevator. That this condition could exist is admittedly rare, but indifference to
wear could allow it to happen, and the result could be a bad accident. Worn or
damaged square shoulder surfaces of elevators are easily corrected by properly
machining these surfaces.
Inspect the collars for squareness, and uniformity and depth of wear. Uneven
wear or worn recesses of 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) or more requires refacing of collar
surface. Hinge Pins and springs should be carefully inspected visually for excess
wear and obvious weakness.

Locking of screws
All Screws are normally secured by a mechanical bolt lock or with a safety wire.
All other screws are secured by metal adhesive (Locktite).

Measuring of Wear
Hinge pins, latch pins and socket holes are not normally measured for wear in
the field. When it becomes apparent that the hinge or latch pins are loosing the
elevator should be dismantled for general engineering check up.

For square shoulder elevators a rule marked in sixteenth of an inch as adequate.

The straight edge of a rule is used to check the squareness of the top bore and the
end of a rule is inserted into the worn pockets and ridges. Wear of 1/16 inch (1,6
mm) or more should require refacing of collar surface.

Trouble shooting
In all event where the elevator doesn't function as expected, carry out the following checks to identify the cause of the
problem.
1. Check if all hinge pins are straight.
2. Check for excessive clearance in the elevator; use wear data criteria for checking
3. Check for deformation of parts
4. Ensure all parts are present.
If any failure of any part is detected, remove the elevator from service and have it repaired.
