(‫)ﻧﻈﻢ اﻟﻮﺳﺎﺋﻂ اﻟﻤﺘﻌﺪدة‬

This course covers the main concepts of computer generated media including: text, still
graphics, animation and sound, software development cycle of computer generated multimedia
applications, exploring the user interface, design and implementation of a real multimedia
project will be part of the class lab.

What is Multimedia?
 Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings,
still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of information
can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally.
 A Multimedia Application is an Application which uses a collection of multiple media sources e.g. text,
graphics, images, sound/audio, animation and/or video.

Types of Computer Generated Images

23 Dr. Nabil Hamed

Properties of raster images
 Generated directly by digital cameras and scanners.
 Hence represent real life images very accurately.
 Loose accuracy when zoomed in
 Made of pixels

Disadvantages
Is bound by the number of pixels in the image. It cannot be scaled up without losing quality.
Large dimensions & detailed images equal large file size.
It is more difficult to print raster images using a limited amount of spot colors.
Depending on the complexity of the image, conversion to vector may be time consuming.

Vector Graphics

25 Dr. Nabil Hamed

Properties of Vector Images
 Image elements described with mathematical equations.
 Do not lose accuracy when zoomed in.
 Can be easily manipulated, transformed, and changed.
 Can be scaled to any size without losing quality.
 Resolution-independent: Can be printed at any size/resolution.
 Number of colors can be easily increased or reduced to adjust printing budget
 A large dimension vector graphic can maintain a small file size.
 Vector art is required by many service providers.
 Can be easily converted to raster
Disadvantages
Cannot" represent real images very accurately
 It is not the best format for photographs or photo-like elements with blends of color

Vectorization (raster to vector)
The process of converting raster graphics into vector graphics. How?

27 Dr. Nabil Hamed

Rasterization (Vector To Raster )
is the task of taking an image described in a vector graphics format (shapes) and converting it into a
raster image (pixels or dots) for output on a video display or printer, or for storage in a bitmap file
format. How?
Resolution effect
