Tourism Skills Assessment Task
Scenario: TRAVELLING TO SOUTH AFRICA
TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS
Dear Tourism Teacher
This task will assess:
Content knowledge of tour plans; route planning; planning a budget; choice of
transport, accommodation, tourist attractions and activities; and compiling a day-
by-day itinerary.

Scenario
Zama and Gloria are working colleagues in Mexico. Zama is a South African citizen
holding a 2 year working visa while Gloria is a local Mexican citizen. The ladies both
aged 30 years have decided to spend their 3-week annual vacation in South Africa. Zama
has not been to South Africa since she turned 21.
You are the travel agent who will be assisting them plan their 3 week vacation in South
Africa, during September 2024.
SECTION 1: TOUR PLANS, ROUTE PLANNING AND COMPILING AN ITINERARY
1.1. Gloria has to apply for a holiday visa in order to travel to South Africa. She has
explored the options of applying for her visa needs the following information.
Using the email template provided in the Addendum, explain the following points.
What is an e-Visa?
How to apply for a South African visa if the e-Visa facility is off-line
The cost of obtaining a visa to South Africa if they stay for more than 90
days.
The time frame that the visa will be valid for. (8)
1.2. The ladies have decided to take a flight directly to KwaZulu Natal and embark on
the first leg of their journey in this beautiful province. They have made the
following decisions about their trip to KZN:
They will arrive at King Shaka International on Day 1 (SAA 2319 – R 17 098
p.p. O/W
They have hired a vehicle which will cost them R 410 per day including all
insurances. The will have the vehicle for 5 days and expect to be spending
a total of R 1500 on fuel. Toll Fees – R 400 in total.
They will spend two nights in Northern KZN in a guest house (R 230 p.p.p.n)
Two nights in Durban in an Air BnB ( R195 p.p.p.n)
They have allocated R 250 p,p,p,d for meals.
They will visit Maloti- Drakensburg Park on Day 5 on their drive to Gauteng.
They will be visiting the following places during their five-day stay in KZN
Shakaland
Durban Central – the beach and surrounds
Isimangaliso Wetland park
Maloti- Drakensburg Park

1.2.1. You need to create a tour itinerary for them using the above information. Take note
that they will arrive in Durban on Day 1 at 08:00. Plan a logical itinerary for the two
friends. Your tour itinerary must be completed in a table form. The following
information must be included:

Transport for Each Day must be included
Accommodation for each day must be indicated – Locate relevant examples
in the area concerned.
Attractions and activities must be indicated. Applicable prices where
necessary must also be included.

1.2.2. Using the Map of KZN provided, create a logical route plan for the two friends.
Indicate the starting point and travel direction based on their tour itinerary. (4)
1.2.3. Compile a tour budget for the two friends for their trip in KwaZulu Natal. You
budget must include any attractions and activities that you include in your itinerary.
Your itinerary and your budget must match each other. (5)
1.3. The two friends will need to take the necessary safety precautions when travelling
in South Africa. Create an A4 size infographic poster detailing general
precautions that they must take when travelling in the country. Your poster must
have information and visuals to make understanding easier for the friends. (10)
