Members Accuse Washington Golf and Country Club of Gender Discrimination Over 'Men's Grill
Members Accuse Washington Golf and Country Club of Gender Discrimination Over 'Men's Grill
e, the undersigned members and family members of the WGCC community, are writing to express our
W
concerns withthe Capital Planthat was shared duringthe informational Town Hall on February 26th. To be clear,
we applaud and support an expansion of the Tap Room for use by all adult members, family members, and
guests. However, we have serious concerns about investing $5 million (at an increased monthly cost to members)
in a project that maintains a separate Men’s Grill, limits co-ed space available for the Tap Room expansion, and
unnecessarily duplicates bar/dining features that will remain inaccessible to women. Now is the time for the
Board to maximize co-ed socializing spaces and create more parity in the Men’s and Women’s lounge areas.
ince the Board’s request for feedback submissions tomasterplan@washingtongolfcc.org, dozens amongus have
S
shared our objection to perpetuating a gender-restricted Men’s Grill at WGCC. At a minimum, there is broad
agreement that the issue merits open discussion and debate before scheduling a vote that offers no alternative to
maintaining a gender-exclusive Men’s Grill either under the status quo or proposed Capital Plan.
iven the magnitude of cost increase proposed and impact of this gender-restricted feature on our collective
G
identity and membership experience for decades to come, we request the Board to:
) Delay any vote on the current Capital Plan until members have sufficient time and information to inform their
1
voting decisions. It would be irresponsible for the Board to advance the Capital Plan to a vote before they have
duly considered feedback and fully vetted the plan and its costs with the membership.
) Provide an alternative Men’s lounge/locker room amenities voting option that maximizes space available for
2
the Tap Room expansion and does not include a separate, gender-restricted bar/dining destination.
) Provide an open forum for members and their families to publicly share with the Board and each other views
3
for and against continuing to operate a gender-restricted Men’s Grill at WGCC.
he Capital Plan presents an important opportunity for the Board to understand member priorities so that we can
T
build the strongest possible future for our club. We look forward to working with the Board to ensure the final
Capital Plan meets our shared goal of making WGCC a strong, engaged, vibrant, and welcoming community for
all members, family members, and guests for decades to come.
Respectfully submitted,
egan Alperstein
