CHAPTER TWO
2.0 ACTIVITIES PERFORMED
Mzumbe university have two library for students, such as physical library and e-Library. In
those to library it combine different books for study, for seven days performing the assigned
tasks. The following were the tasks that I was assigned
With for the whole time of my field placement.

1st WEEK OF MY FIELD PLACEMENT

a) Dressing of shelves.
I was assigned to perform the dressing of the shelves in library, whereby it is the process of
arranging the materials in the shelves by considering their class Number or it is the process of
putting properly the books and other related materials that are found in, by put them upright. In
library collection I performed the task of dressing Journals, dissertation, and other materials that
are found in the collection. In library two collection performed the task of books of marketing,
reference materials and other material. In those two library they use DDC tools to arrange library
materials.

b) Cataloguing
In this task of cataloguing of the materials, I was assigned to perform both the original and copy
Cataloguing. Copy cataloguing is the process of taking the bibliographic description from the
Library resources like books and journals from the copy cataloguing sources and prepare the
main entry And the added entries. I also performed the original cataloguing where the
cataloguing Information is not available from the copy cataloguing sources like library of
congress online Catalogue, and using cataloguing tools like Angro-American cataloguing rule2
together with list of Subject headings.

2 WEEK OF MY FIELD PLACEMENT

nd

. a) Data entry
I was assigned to assign the catalogued information to the computer system so that library users
can access this information easily and faster without wasting their time. At this second week,
library staffs have already catalogued and classified some of the books and my task was to enter
the catalogued information to the system. But, first before entering the data, I started to check
from the library database if the same information has already been entered or not. If the same
Information has been entered, I was not entering this information again so as to avoid
reduplication of information. Instead, I was adding some information to the existed information
such as copy number as it book has its own copy number so as to indicate how many book are in
the database, then I saved and upload to the database.

b) Shelving
Soon after the data to the computer system, I was assigned to take those books to the shelves and
arranging them to the specific place where users can find them easily when he or she need them
to use, I placed each book to the shelf that supposed to be according to their class mark.

3rd WEEK OF MY FIELD PLACEMENT

a) Readers services/ customer care
In this week I was assigned to take care of library users at service desk where they came seeking
for different assistance like how to access and using library catalogue, electronic resources and
different location at library building.

4 WEEK OF MY FIELD PLACEMENT

th

a) Classification
Some books were already being catalogued by the library staffs but not yet being classified and
given their class numbers since their class numbers are not available from the copy cataloguing
sources. I was assigned to perform original classification by using classification tools to find
their class marks.
CHAPTER THREE

3.0 Problems encountered, conclusion and recommendations

1. Lack of enough computers installed with library management software

It became a problem when we need to perform data entry at the same time. We were ought
to wait for each other until someone complete entering data to the system and someone else
starting data entry.
2. Poor Internet connectivity
o While I was in my field placement, some of the days I was not able to accomplish my task of
data entry due to the poor internet connectivity.
3. Soft cover of the books.
o Due to the soft cover of the book, it was very challenging while I was assigned to shelving
and shelf reading. This is because, these books cannot stand upright while arranging them on
the shelves and as a result they are deformed and also destruct the display of the books on
the shelves

3.01 Conclusion and recommendations

3.02 Conclusion
Practical training seems to be real helpful since it makes student to be able to perform what he or
she leant during class hours in theories. I have an experience in how the library services are
operated and provide me team working skills on how to cooperate with other staffs while you
work in an institution or any other organization.
3.03 Recommendation
3.04 Extension of Practical training period
Things required to be learnt during this period overwhelm the time given for practical training. I
propose to the university to recheck the duration for practical training as it limits the students
from learning other new and important things because the 4 weeks stipulated allocated are not
enough for enabling the students to efficiently and effectively master everything about the field
practical training. I am confident that most of the host institutions will agree to my preposition
because students from the Institute of Social Works are performing wonderful tasks during their
practical training period which are to the institutions’ advantage.
3.05 Strong internet connectivity
Internet connectivity should be strong so that to allow staffs to perform their daily activities
without any problem. Data entry and online reference services needs comfortable internet to
ensure services to users and make library staffs performing their duties accordingly.
