Presidents Message
As President of Cal Poly Pomonas Engineers Without Borders student chapter (EWB-CPP) I would like to thank you for taking the time to get to know our organization. EWB is a relatively new organization on campus yet it has already impacted people around the world. The CPP chapter along with Inland Empire Professional and UCR chapters, have partnered with the community of San Lorenzo, Guatemala in order to reverse contamination and eliminate severe rationing of their water supply . The partnership between these chapters and the community has been in progress for three years. There is still work to be done. If you are interested in getting involved attend our design meetings every Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. in a location to be determined. For those of you who can not travel abroad EWB-CPP is investigating the acquisition of several local projects. The ferrocement model tank located at the John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies is being waterproofed with ThoroSeal. A rainwater harvesting system is being proposed for a Glendora church to water a garden that distributes vegetables to the community. Solar panels are being proposed for a Calexico church as a way of implementing an alternative energy plan. For more information contact Local Project Lead Nick Gernak at nwgernak@gmail.com. Several social and fundraising events are being held this quarter. In October, for members and officers to better acquaint themselves, a hiking trip on a local trail is being planned. Several officers will be attending the Engineers Without Borders West Coast Workshop, being held in Portland, Oregon. Race CPP, an Amazing Race style fundraiser where teams compete to reach the finish line, will be held in November. If you are interested in getting more involved join a committee . Committees consist of Fundraising, Event Coordinating, Writing, Photography, and Treasury. Speak to any officer for more information. Thank You for your continued support, Esteban M. Why Engineers Without Borders?

By Jose M. Paredez When I was a child my parents and I would travel to Tijuana, Mexico several times a year. The quality of life in the city always broke my heart even at a young age. My dad would always give my siblings and I a dollar to purchase candy or toys from the street vendors, but a single mother of four always seemed to be lying on the street asking for monetary help. Instead of purchasing noise makers I always deposited the dollar into the cup in front of the single mother. Although it put a smile on my face it didnt last for long because just a few feet away was a single mother of five that looked hungrier. As I stood there and looked around there were dozens of individuals in the same situation and I had run out of dollars. A sense of desperation came over me. I wanted to help everyone but lacked the resources to do so. As I grew older the feeling of desperation never went away. It has always bothered me. Joining Engineers Without Borders changed that. The organization provides the necessary tools and resources to change peoples lives. This club will not ask you to save the world. The time and dedication you invest in this club is up to you. There is no contribution too small. You can start contributing by becoming a member and joining a committee. Your reasons for joining Engineers Without Borders might be different than mine. No matter what the reason is BE THE CHANGE. Be the person that changes peoples lives. JOIN ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS TODAY!

Tacos for Water

September 29, 2011 In order to fundraise for our international project and promote the first general meeting a taco sale was held on September 29, 2011. Several members donated food and volunteered their time. They had the opportunity to grill, prepare, and sell tacos. For those of you who purchased a plate of tacos, thank you. The funds raised will help bring potable water to the community of San Lorenzo, Guatemala.
