3 LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The lightning protection conductors shall be capable of attracting to themselves all
lightning strokes which in their absence may strike within the protective zone of the
lightning protective conductors.
The path between air terminations and earth shall be such that the lightning current
is discharged to earth without passing through non-conducting parts of the building
and without causing fire, flash over and dangerous potential differences in or
around the structure.

4 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIGHTNING STROKE

4.1 ELECTRICAL EFFECTS

The lightning current when discharged through a resistance of the earth electrode,
it produces a resistive voltage drop which momentarily raises the potential of the
protective system and also high voltage gradient around the electrode.
4.2 FLASHOVERS

The point of strike may rise to very high potential causing flash over to nearby
metals. This flash over is a risk to occupants.
4.3 MECHANICAL EFFECTS

When high currents flow through a conductor or structure considerable mechanical

forces are produced. These mechanical forces try to damage the conductor /
structure.

5 LIGHTNING PROTECTION REQUIREMENT CRITERIA

5.1 METHODOLOGY

The report specifies the required Lightning Protection System (LPS) class with the
use of FURSE STRIKE Risk Assessment Calculator tool for each of the structures
under scope, by means of evaluating the risk of a lightning strike and the probability
of damages in accordance with IEC 62305-2 standard” Protection against Lightning
– Part 2: Risk Assessment”
5.2 PROTECTED STRUCTURE ASSESSMENT

The area to be protected shall be determined by the assessment of:

 Plan of roof of each floor level.
 Plan of building / structure at the ground level.
 Front, side and sectional views of structure/building.
 Position of cable, conduits, metal pipes, vertically continuous recess etc.

5.3 NEED FOR PROTECTION & ESTIMATION OF RISK EXPOSURE

The requirement of lightning protection for any building/structure shall be assessed

by calculation of exposure risk probability based on due weightage given to various
overriding considerations.
The need of protection depends on number of factors such as:
 Where large number of people
 Where essential public services are concerned
 Where the area is one in which lightning is prevalent
 Where there are very tall or isolated structures.
 Where there are structures of high importance.
The probability of a structure or building being struck by lightning in any one year is
the product of the “lightning flash density” and the “effective collection area” of the
structure.
The lightning flash density, Ng, is the number of flashes to ground per square
kilometer per year.
Values of Ng vary significantly; estimates of the average annual density calculated
from the correlation between the number of thunderstorm days per annum and the
flash density. This can be expressed thus

BS EN 62305-2 Annex A approximates this relationship, for temperate regions, to:

𝑁𝑔 = 0.1 𝑥 𝑇𝐷
Data regarding environmental Influences include the number of
Thunderstorm days and Environmental and Location factors.
The area of the station is characterized as Rural Area, as it is at least more
than 1km away from the nearest distribution node. The structures studied
are part of the Reservoir station and are generally considered either lower
than their nearby structures or similar in height.
Data about the number of thunderstorm days per year are extracted from
[Table 3] for the Makkah Area to be 20. Based on these data the Annual
Ground Flash Density is calculated around 1.7. A value of 2 is used in the
calculations

6 CLASS OF LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM

The class of lightning protection system (LPS) shall be determined by the
characteristics of the structure to be protected and by the considered lightning
protection level.
Four classes of LPS (I to IV) are defined in IEC 62305-3 corresponding to lightning
protection levels summarized below as per Table 1 of IEC 62305-1.
Table 4: Lightning Protection Level
LPL (LP Level) Class of LPS
I I
II II
III III
IV IV
The selection of LPS class shall be based on Table 5 of IEC
62305-1. Where: -
Class I covers for maximum first short stroke peak current of 200 kA and where
class II covers for maximum stroke peak current of supplemented 150 kA.
Class I requirements will be more onerous in terms of air termination conductors or
lowest rolling sphere radius thereby giving the highest coverage.
Class of LPS for each building should be determined in each case, according with
calculations.
Buildings shall be provided with mesh-type collector lines. The collectors have to be
configured in a way such that no point of the roof is at a distance of more than 5 m
from a collector.
The dimension of the meshes should be according with the calculations for each
building and installation. And According to SWCC standard specification QC10-H-093
E13 clause
5.4 The maximum permitted mesh size is as follows:
 buildings with telecommunication or control rooms 10 x 10 m
 Other buildings 10 x 20 m
Protruding roof superstructures, such as ladders, chimney stacks, pipes, antenna
mounting brackets, etc. and other metallic parts of buildings which are located near
the roof (e.g. louvers of ventilation openings) must be directly connected to the
collector lines
Each class of LPS is characterized by the following.
 Lightning parameters as per Tables 3 and 4 in IEC 62305-1.

If not already connected with the collectors or with the internal potential
equalization, larger metal parts mounted in/on the building outer walls (e.g. frames
of doors, ventilation louvers) shall be terminated on the down conductors.
The whole of lightning protective system should have combined resistance to earth
not exceeding 10 ohms.
The function of down conductor is to provide low impedance path from the air
termination to the earth electrode so that the lightning current can be safely
conducted to earth.
Steel framed building might need no added down conductors, the frame work itself
providing efficient natural network of many paths to earth.
In line with IEC 62305-3, the positioning of LPS down conductors for non-isolated
LPS (as applicable to buildings in PS-NJB JUBAIL shall be as follows:
 For each non-isolated LPS the number of down-conductors shall be not less
than two and shall be distributed around the perimeter of the structure to be
protected, subject to architectural and practical constraints.
 Equal spacing of the down-conductors around the perimeter.

ROUTE OF DOWN CONDUCTORS

Following considerations shall apply:

 Unless aesthetic or architectural considerations prohibit, down conductors
shall be uniformly distributed around the outside walls of the
buildings/enclosures.
 The paths between the air terminations and earth terminations shall be as
direct as possible and shall avoid sharp bends, upturns and kinks.
 No deep re-entrant loop, in which length of the conductor forming the loop is
more than 8 times the width of the open side of the loop, shall be adopted. This
is avoided to prevent large inductive voltage drop across the open side of the
loop.
 In a building cantilevered from first storey onwards, the down conductors shall
not follow the contour of the building.
 Holes in cornice or parapet walls shall be used for passage of down
conductors, wherever possible.
 The minimum distance between down conductors and doors, windows and
other apertures must be 0.5 m.
 All down conductors which are connected to the earthing system must be

7.4 EARTH TERMINATIONS SYSTEM

Following considerations shall apply as per IEC 62305-3 clause 5.4.

For dispersion of the lightning current (high frequency behavior) into the ground,
whilst minimizing any potentially dangerous over-voltages, the shape and
dimensions of the earth-termination system are important.
In this respect, a low earthing resistance less than 10 Ω shall be achieved in lightning
protection,
A single integrated structure earth-termination system (i.e. lightning protection,
power systems and telecommunication systems) shall be provided as this is
considered acceptable in line with IEC 62305-3. In this respect IEC 62305-3 clause
5.4.1 states that “a single integrated structure earth-termination system is
preferable and is suitable for all purposes.
Earth-termination systems shall be bonded in accordance with the requirements of
clause no 6.2 of IEC 62305-3. Equipotentiallization shall be achieved by
interconnecting the LPS with structural metal parts, metal installations, internal
systems, external conductive parts and lines connected to the structure. The
interconnecting means shall be achieved by bonding conductors, where the
electrical continuity is not provided by natural bonding.
As per SWCC standard specification QC10-H-093 E13 the earthing grid resistance
shall be less than 1 Ω which less than the required 10 Ω for lighting protection
system
accordingly, the lightning and earthing system can be integrated in both sites. And
the lightning systems are to be connected with the earthing system via the
grounding bars at outside of the building.
7.5 LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM MATERIALS

As per SWCC standard specification QC10-H-093 E13 clause 5.1 the lightning
system consists of
 Collector rods (air terminals),
 Collector lines
 Down conductors
All above mentioned components shall be from hot dip galvanized round iron (St/tZn
ø10mm) with the necessary fixing, connection and termination elements.

7.6 Inadmissibly Short Distances

Inadmissibly short distances between the lightning protection system and metal
installations or electrical equipment shall be prevented. In the event of potential
hazard due to flash-over or disruptive discharge caused by lightning, appropriate
measures shall be taken.
Admissible distances between lightning protection systems and metal installations,
electrical wiring and equipment shall be determined in compliance with the
standards. This also applies to the use of special roof-mounted collectors
