- Tiki Garcia, former UP Baguio Student Council Chair (Published in the 2000 Baguio Day) The City of Baguio was established by Americans in 1900 at the site of an Ibaloi Village known as Kafagway. Baguio City was designated by the Philippine Commission as the Summer Capital of the Philippines on June 1, 1903 and incorporated as a city by the Philippine Assembly on September 1, 1903. Tourism is one of Baguio s main industries due to its weather in Baguio, to experience cold temperature they rarely have in their home provinces. Also, during summer especially during holyweek tourist from all over the country flocks in the city. To accommodate all these people, there are more than 100 hotels and inns available. Local festivities such as the Panagbenga Festival attracts both local and foreign tourist. Since then, Baguio became a home to many immigrants from other parts of the country. A significant population of foreigners contributed to the diversity of City s colorful culture. People commonly residing in Baguio City are Kankana-eys, Ibalois, Ifugaos, Kapampangans, Pangasinenses, Tagalog, Foreigners such as Indians, Bumbays, English or white people, Chinese and Koreans.
