Geometry Problem

The length of a rectangle is 2cm longer than twice its width. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 34cm. Find its dimensions.

Representation:
The length is 2cm longer than its width L = w + 2 substituting in the formula, we have

Equation:

Solving for L:
The width is 7.5cm while the length is 9.5cm.

Check:
When L=9.5cm and w = 7.5cm, is the perimeter 34cm?

Number Problems
The difference of two numbers is 53. Their sum is 117. Find the smaller number.

Solutions:
Let x = the larger number The difference of two numbers is 53 Therefore, if the larger number is x the smaller number is x-53 Their sum is 117 Larger number + smaller number = 117 x + (x-53) 2x 53 2x 53 + 53 2x x x-53 = 117 = 117 = 117 + 53 = 170 = 85 larger no. = 32 smaller no.

Check:
x + (x-53) = 117 85 + 32 = 117 117 = 117

Age Problem
Sara age three years ago is her age in 4 years. How old is she now? Present Age x Age 3 yrs. Ago x-3 Age in 4 yrs. x+4

Sara

Her age 3 years ago which is (x 3) is her age in 4 years which is x + 4. So let us get of (x + 4) and equate it to x 3.

Equation:

Solution:
Submitted by: Ramon Labrador BEED-2C Submitted to: Ms. Belardo Professor Subtract 3x from both sides Sara s present age Add 12 to both sides Multiply both sides by 4.

Check:
Sara was 21 years old 3 years ago. Sara will be 28 years old in 4 years. (28) = 21 21 = 21

Coin Problems
From his weekly baon Dante saved P 37.50 consisting of P1 and 25c coins. If there is an equal number of P1 and P5 coins, how many coins of each kind does he have? x = number of P1 coin x = number of 25c coin For uniformity of denominator, lets convert P37.50 to centavos, so we have 3750c.

Mixture Problem
A 50ml after-shave lotion at 30% alcohol is mixed with 30ml of pure water. What is the percentage of alcohol in the new solution? y y The amount of the final mixture is given by 50ml + 30ml = 80ml The amount of alcohol is equal to the amunt of alcohol in pure water (which is 0) plus the amount of alcohol in the 30% solution. Let x be the percentage of alcohol I the final solution. Hence 0 + 30% 50ml = x (80) Solve for x x = 0.1817 = 18.75%

Time Problem:
x = 30 no. of P1 coin and the number of 25c coins. Therefore, there are thirty P1 coins and thirty 25c coins. Two trains, traveling towards each other , left from two station that are 900 miles apart, at 4 pm. If the rate of the first train is 72 mph and the rate of the second train is 78 mph, at what time will they pass each other? y After t hours, the two trains will have traveled distances D1 and D2 (in miles) given by D1 =72 t and D2 = 78 t total value is correct. y After t hours total distance D traveled by the two trains is given by D = D1 + D2 = 72 t +78 t = 150 t When distance D is equal to 900 miles, the two trains pass each other. 150 t = 900 Solve the above equation for t t = 6 hours.

Check:
30(P1) = P30.00 30(25c) = 7.50 P37.50
