System description

5 System description
The Kitchen fire suppression system KS 2000-8 marine is a stationary extinguishing sys-
tem which has been specifically designed to protect industrial kitchens, and has an object
specific individual design. The fire detection elements of the system react reliably when
the response temperature is reached. The extinguishing agent flow from "FEBRAMAX-
RC" is released immediately and is discharged through the extinguishing nozzles (1) onto
the objects to be protected. The finely sprayed extinguishing agent forms a foam blocking
layer over the cooking oil or fat (2) so that the fire is starved of oxygen. Simultaneously,
the fat cool down to below the self-ignition temperature, preventing re-ignition. The power
supply to the devices being protected must be switched off when extinguishing starts. Use
the limit switch (3) which is supplied.
The extinguishing agent "FEBRAMAX-RC" has been tested and certified by the accredited
test centre for extinguishing agents and devices.

The extinguishing system is triggered automatically via the heat detectors (14) and/or
manually via the pushbutton for manual release (9).
Together with triggering the extinguishing system the energy supply (electricity and/or
gas) of the kitchen appliances has to be shut off via a limit switch.

14 Systems manual KS2000-8 marine 918364-01 V00 / en

System description

5.1 Extinguishing agent container

The Extinguishing Agent Container is
mounted inside a stainless steel housing
(11).
The triggering mechanism is directly actu- 22
ated by the control device. Depending on
the type of triggering the extinguishing
agent container is equipped with the ap-
propriate mechanical device.
A propellant cartridge integrated in the ex-
tinguishing agent container is opened upon
triggering. The propellant is released and
presses the extinguishing agent into the
extinguishing line (10). 9 11
The protective housing (11) must be built
in such a way that in case of fire the man-
ual release (9) is always accessible for
kitchen personnel.
The extinguishing agent tank has a maxi-
mum service life of 20 years.

5.2 Extinguishing agent

FEBRAMAX-RC is a certified specialised extinguishing agent for use in extinguishing sys-
tems for fighting fires caused by burning cooking fats and deep fat fryers as well as by re-
lated aerosol separators and fume extractor devices in kitchen, canteens and restaurants.
FEBRAMAX-RC is sprayed across the burning cooking fat or oil and forms, an envelop-
ing, gas-tight foam film that extinguishes the fire immediately. Its excellent cooling proper-
ties withdraw the heat from the oil or fat.
FEBRAMAX-RC must not be mixed with other extinguishing agents or replaced by other
extinguishing agents.

5.3 Extinguishing nozzels

The strap of the nozzle cap must be in a downward position (see figure below).

KS2000-8 marine 918364-01 V00 / en Systems manual 15

System description

5.4 Extinguishing line

The following requirements must be met regarding to the quality and length of the extin-
guishing line.
Quality of the extinguishing line
The extinguishing line and fittings of the system are made of stainless steel.
The extinguishing line must be made of 15 x 1 or 15 x 1.5 precision stainless steel
pipe.
Length of the extinguishing line
The length of an extinguishing line is defined by the total length of all pipe segments of the
system and all fittings.
The figures for maximum and minimum pipelength and number of fittings have to be con-
sidered acc. Following table:

max. min.
Length of extinguishing line 18 m 2m
Elbows-fittings 12 pcs. 3 pcs.
t-fittings 3 pcs. 1 pcs.

If more than one extinguishing agent tank is required for a protected object, the fol-
lowing must be observed:
Every extinguishing agent tank must be connected to a single pipe system.

5.5 Extinguishing nozzles at open and standard kitchen appliances

The system is intended for two types of nozzles. Both types have the same K-factor but
different spraying angles. The choice of nozzle type depends on the distance between ex-
tinguishing nozzle and fat surface of the object to be protected.

7.2 Functional description

In case of fire one or more electrical heat detectors (3) respond due to the rising heat. The
heat detector (3) sends an electrical signal to the electrical fire detection control panel (4).
Through the electrical fire detection control panel (4) an electrical magnet (11) at the
release head (12) of the extinguishing agent container (10) is triggered. This unlatches a
spring-loaded bolt that opens the integrated CO2 propellant cartridge (9) of the
extinguishing agent container (10). The propellant is released and presses the
extinguishing agent through the riser tube (8) into the extinguishing line (2) to the
extinguishing nozzles (1) from where it reaches the source of fire.
The protected equipment and the supply air to the ventilation system shuts down.
In addition, the compact extinguishing system can also be triggered manually (5).

R R WARNING
Risk of reignition if kitchen equipment not switched off
To prevent reignition, it is absolutely essential that the protected devices are switched off
when the extinguishing system is activated.
