MOTOR

1. Type of engine. Meaning of MCC engine, why compact.

The last ‘C’ in MC-C stands for ‘COMPACT’. So all the improvements in the new design are
targeted to achieve reduction in weight and cost of the engine, at the same time improving or
maintaining the overall efficiency.

2. Bearings in MCC engine, why crosshead pin dia is big, he was not satisfied with reduced LO
press. He wanted to hear about more angular velocity. Then he asked What is angular velocity.
What type of lubrication in crosshead. What is hydrodynamic lubrication. What will be
minimum relative speed for hydrodynamic lubrication.
the rate of change of angular position of a rotating body.

3. What about main bearings Development.

4. Flow command and working of steering gear, how telemotor Works, what pump control lever
do? Function of Hunting lever.

5. Why we need to tight bottom end bearing. I din't understood que so I asked him again, then
he asked about why need to tight Foundation bolt? What is freeting? Why is called freeting?
Fretting can take place whenever low-amplitude vibratory sliding takes place between two
surfaces.Fretting is caused by adhesion of contact surface asperities, which are subsequently
broken again by the small movement. This breaking causes wear debris to be formed.

6. what is freeting corrosion?

If the debris and/or surface subsequently undergo chemical reaction, i.e., mainly oxidation, the
mechanism is termed fretting corrosion.

7. Difference between MC and MCC.

Increased power to weight ratio.
Increased mean effective pressure for same bore engines at same speed.
All large diameter bearings are made of thin-walled bearings.
A simple cross head pin structure with reduced size and weight.
The introduction of reduced diameter twin tie bolts.
Bottom end of the tie rods threaded to the transverse girder of bed plate and hence reduction in
material.
Reduced edge pressure of the main bearing.
Simplified main bearing casting.
High piston top land. It ensures the top piston ring is not exposed to high combustion chamber
temperatures. Along with high top land, CPR (controlled pressure relief) piston rings are used to
reduce the pressure drop across the ring and hence prevention of piston ring collapse.
Reduced height of the cylinder block and the cylinder cam box.
Due to the reduced mass of the moving parts the second-order moment decreased by about 8%,
improving the vibration condition.
A simplified frame structure makes it easier to weld.
Holding down bolts in a sunken structure to make compact design.

8. Difference between MCC and ME.

Chain drive for camshaft
Camshaft with fuel cams, exhaust cams and indicator cams
Fuel pump actuating gear, including roller guides and reversing mechanism
Conventional fuel pressure booster and VIT system
Exhaust valve actuating gear and roller guides
Engine driven starting air distributor

Hydraulic cylinder units, including:
Electronically controlled fuel injection, and
Electronically controlled exhaust valve activation
Electronically controlled starting air valves
Electronically controlled auxiliary blowers
Integrated electronic governor functions
Tacho system
Electronically controlled Alpha lubricators

9. What are the latest advancements in cross head.

Bearing Geometry - No grooves at the centre.
Material modification- Instead of white metal we AlSn40 are used.
Synthetic layer is applied on top of AlSn40.
Angle between two axial grooves is now 70 degree.

10. Cross head bearing lubrication

MAN B&W TYPE

The lower half of the bearing housing is formed by the top end of the connecting rod. It supports
the crosshead pin over its entire length, the piston rod being bolted to the top half of the
crosshead pin through a cut out in the bearing top half. Oil supply to the crosshead is via a
telescopic pipe from the main LO supply at a pressure of about 2.5 bar.
The lower bearing shell (tin aluminium with overlay) has oil grooves with machined wedges .
The oil enters via the cut out channel in the centre. The grooves extend right to the edges of the
bearing to ensure a flow of oil, thus cooling the bearing.

SULZER RTA TYPE

The early RTA had a forked crosshead with the piston rod passing through a hole in the
crosshead pin and secured underneath with a nut. Oil entered the bearing through holes in the
shell. via a groove machined in the the lower bearing housing.
The Modern RTA has a continuous lower bearing, the housing formed by the top of the conrod.
Only a lower bearing shell is fitted, the top bearing housing being lined with white metal. Oil
boosted in pressure to 10 - 12 bar is supplied via a swinging arm.The swinging arm also carries oil
at system pressure (4 bar) for piston cooling.

24. Turn down ratio

Turndown ratio refers to the width of the operational range of a device, and is defined as the
ratio of the maximum capacity to minimum capacity. For example, a device with a maximum
output of 10 units and a minimum output of 2 units has a turndown ratio of 5

25. Deadband in governor and how to improve

Dead band is the change in speed required before the governor will make a corrective
movement of the throttle. In other words, Dead band is speed of fluctuation around the steady
state speed, in which governor will not initiate corrective action. The dead band effect is reduced
by increasing the sensitivity of the governor.
This can be achieved by;
Driving the flyweight at higher speed
Use the conical spring
Hydraulic amplifiers can be used to amplify the governor effect.
Linkages shall not be worn
Governor oil to be of low viscous oil so as to reduce the drag effect.
Less mass of fly weight by using a hollow weight.

26. Miller cycle,nox

A Miller-cycle engine leaves the intake valve open during part of the compression stroke, so that
the engine is compressing against the pressure of the supercharger rather than the pressure of
the cylinder walls. The effect is increased efficiency, at a level of about 15 percent.
The Miller cycle involves early closure of the inlet valve, causing the intake air to expand and
cool; the lower intake air temperature reduces the combustion temperature peaks responsible
for most NOx formation.

27. What is slip in engine

Slip (percent) = Engine distance – ship’s distance/ Engine’s distance X 100

28. How to calculate engine distance and actual distance

Engine distance = Pitch X RPM X 60 X 24 / 1852.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBuwhGE6KeE

33. What is droop? Function..How is helpful in paralleling..which generator takes load first…less
droop one or more droop one?
As the load on the engine increases, the fuel supply to the engine is increased and yet it is
allowed to run on a proportionally lower speed. This feature of a governing system is termed as
droop. When more than one prime movers are connected to the same shaft, as in the case of
generating electrical power, droop permits a stable division of load between them.

34. Safematic system in Steering gear.

The main steering gear shall be so arranged that in the event of loss of steering capability due to
a single failure in any part of one of the power actuating systems of the main steering gear,
excluding the tiller, quadrant or components serving the same purpose, or seizure of the rudder
actuating system shall not put the other non-defective unit also out of operation.
The main steering gear shall comprise either:
Two independent and separate power actuating systems, each capable of operating conditions
of main steering gear as we have seen above.

35. explain power card draw card?

39. Plating on piston ring if liner is chrome plated?

It is recommended that chrome plated rings not be installed in chrome plated liners under any
circumstances. Catastrophic destruction will likely result. Plain cast iron-manganese phosphate
coated, or molybdenum rings may be used

40. Bed plate crack actions

The best non destructive test (NDT) method on-board would be used to find the extent of the
crack, and methods such as dye penetrant or magnetic particle investigation (MPI) could be
used.
Once the extent of the crack is established, then advise would be sought from the engine makers
to ensure that the engine is safe to operate. To reduce the loads present in the bedplate, the
engine power for those cylinders would be removed by lifting the two fuel pumps. This would be
a prudent course of action until the extent of the crack had been fully identified. Class would be
informed, especially if repairs are to be performed, to ensure that any proposed method of
repair would be acceptable to them.

41. Type of steel

Plain carbon and mild steel are the most common grades of steel for shipbuilding, as they boast
a raft of beneficial properties that make them uniquely suited for marine engineering. These
include: High yield strengths and typical tensile strengths on a range of 490 – 620 MPa.

42. Slack chain indications

46. Types of liner wear
The wear in the cylinder liner is mainly because of following reasons:-

1) Due to friction.
2) Due to corrosion.
3) Abrasion
4) Scuffing or Adhesion

47. Fuel pump timing effects

Incorrect fuel injection pump timing leads to reduced performance of the engine and can cause
engine misfiring or other less obvious symptoms. It also causes over-consumption of fuel,
excessive smoke production, loss of power and problems starting the engine as well.

53. SFOC & FQS, how you do fqs in me-c engine

https://www.marinesite.info/2014/03/specific-fuel-oil-consumption.html
FQS IS A MANUAL ADJUSTMENT OF FUEL INJECTION TIMING. THIS SETTING IS USED WHEN WE
GET FUEL OF DIFFERENT IGNITION LAG. WHEN A FUEL IS RECEIVED, IT IS SENT TO LAB FOR
TESTING. ONCE THE REPORT COMES ALL ITS PROPERTIES ARE CHECKED AND NOTED.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PROPERTY IS IGNITION LAG. A FUEL WITH HIGH IGNITION
LAG WILL TAKE MUCH TIME TO BURN AND LEAD TO DECREASE IN MAXIMUM PRESSURE IN
CYLINDER WHILE THE FUEL WITH LESS IGNITION LAG WILL BURN QUICKLY AND WILL LEAD TO
HIGHER MAXIMUM PRESSURE. BOTH THIS SITUATION DISTURB THE PROPER COMBUSTION OF
FUEL.

TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM, FQS SETTING IS PROVIDED IN THE V.I.T SYSTEM BY

WHICH THE FUEL OIL ADMISSION ANGLE CAN BE ADVANCED OR RETARDED.

THE ADVANCE OF THE BEGINNING OF INJECTION WILL RAISE THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE.
NORMAL POWER AND FUEL CONSUMPTION CAN BE RESTORED. FQS IS USED ONLY FOR
REGULATING THE MAXIMUM CYLINDER PRESSURE AND TIMING WHERE IT SHOULD OCCUR
WITH RESPECT TO PISTON TRAVEL.

54. A/E deacrb- Test and checks carried out in on Con Rod.

55. Ovality and its value

56. Fuel pump timing effects
incorrect fuel injection pump timing leads to reduced performance of the engine and can cause
engine misfiring or other less obvious symptoms. It also causes over-consumption of fuel,
excessive smoke production, loss of power and problems starting the engine as well.

57. why butterfly valve in jacket water system... Not gate valve and other valve
Here is a list of common applications of a butterfly valve used in ship:
In space-restrictive situations, butterfly valves are compact.
For the transportation of corrosive and non-corrosive fluids.
To regulate medium flow in different parts of a ship.
In places where a tight shut-off is required because butterfly valves effectively prevent leakage.
For jacking-up rigs and in ballast systems.
For underwater applications because butterfly valves are durable in saltwater.
As a shut-off valve because butterfly valves with pneumatic actuators can be rotated very
quickly.

58. synthetic lub oil

Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical compounds that are artificially modified or
synthesised. Synthetic lubricants can be manufactured using chemically modified petroleum
components rather than whole crude oil, but can also be synthesized from other raw materials.

In the domestic refrigeration plant , on board the ship, there is a by-pass line short
circuiting the condenser, receiver and the expansion valves and connects directly to the
evaporator coil with a valve which is always kept closed. With the compressor working
the gas is circulated through the coils through this line. The gas being hot melts the ice
on the coils and defrosting is achieved.

64. Why crankshaft is case harden.

Carburising, or case hardening, is now largely out of favour, although it has been favoured in the
past, before nitriding had been invented, or whilst nitriding was at a less advanced stage of
development. This process diffuses carbon into the surface of a low-carbon steel, increasing its
hardenability. This can impart large increase in hardness, with considerable case-depth and an
increase in wear-resistance and fatigue strength. However, owing to the harden, quench and
temper nature of this treatment, distortion can be a very serious problem.

engine combustion process, forming the corrosive material – liquid sulphuric acid.

90. What is Hot corrosion

Hot Corrosion: It occurs due to the presence of Vanadium (Va) and Sodium (Na) in the fuel oil
and affects exhaust passage of the engine.

91. Liner wear, liner material, and wear limit

https://www.marineinsight.com/guidelines/reasons-for-cylinder-liner-wear-and-ways-to-

An approximate normal cylinder liner wear rate is about 0.1 mm per 1000 running hours. The
wear rate increases if the engine is overloaded. Generally, the liner has to be replaced when the
cylinder liner wear rate is about 0.6-0.8% of the bore diameter or as per the manufacturer’s
recommendation.
