1. Establish the center lines of the vertical and horiztonal strokes, but drawing two rectangles the width/height of the vertical and horizontal paths.

Note: These three rectangles are the same (just at 90 rotations from each other) because the stroke width is equal throughout.

2.

Draw a perfect circle for the round shape, then cut the circle path at the upper right quadrant. The anchor points from the cut quadrant should align perfectly with the centering lines drawn in Step 1.

3.

Draw the straight strokes with the pen tool . Start by clicking on the open end points of the open circle so one complete stroke is drawn.

4. The main spine of the symbol is established, but must be edited slightly. The top stroke of the f is curved on both the outer and inner stroke. Simply rounding the stroke joint will round only the outer stroke, not the inner. For this kind of rounded join two bezier points, rather than one bezier corner point must be added and adjusted.

6. The symbol is approaching its final form, but is not complete. The strokes dont break the symbol correctly. A brush is the solution; but to get to that brush, first drag the symbol into the Graphic Styles panel.

7. Draw a straight path and apply the new graphic style by selecting the path and clicking on the graphic style in the Graphic Styles panel. (To view a graphic style before applying hold down the Control key and click-and-hold over the style).

12. Hold down option and drag the newly colored path directly on top of the original brush. The brush dialog will appear. Click OK. A second dialog will appear asking if you want to Apply, Leave or Cancel the change of brush stroke. Click Apply.

13. The symbol appears nearly complete. However, the inner corner of the top stroke of the f is rounded, not angled. Therefore a few final steps are necessary.

14. In order to make these final adjustments the symbol must be detached and expanded from the brush that made it. Select the path and go to Object > Expand Appearance.
