Creating structures has been something I always wanted to continue doing in my life.
Every person
has had the satisfaction of creating something in their life, be it building a LEGO set or making a build
on Minecraft, it is like putting pieces into a puzzle. Civil engineering is similar to the forementioned
examples; however, it is more like the pieces form a larger piece that must fit in to a larger puzzle. I
came to recognise this during my visit to Edinburgh where I first saw the Forth Bridge. Researching
on the Forth Bridge days later showed how complex civil engineering must be, considering the
structure but also the surrounding environment.
Problem solving has been something I am proficient at; I had entered the UKMT early in year 12 and
landed a silver award. Mathematics has always been my strongest subject with my strongest topics
being quadratic functions and mechanics as they have always been the topics that I saw the greatest
link to my ambitions. My understanding when it comes to mechanics in mathematics comes
particularly useful when it comes to understanding mechanics and materials in physics which goes
much more in depth in the topic. Having worked behind a till makes these topics slightly easier since
I am accustomed to calculating in my head very frequently, it has basically become my second
nature. Using I have learned academically and through experience, I can learn much easier in a
course such as civil engineering.
I have moved residency two times in the past with each area being vastly different from each other
and learning different curriculums which has made me more adaptable to different areas and
situations. In addition to that, I can work in a team quite efficiently when it comes to practical tests in
physics which in a few occasions I did a lot of the written work for my partners. Researching is
something I enjoy doing in spare time and for occasional lessons; learning new things give me a
sense of accomplishment and may sometimes become useful even later in studies.
Furthermore, I am a member of our form representatives in college. This gave me an opportunity to
contribute to the academic community I am a part of. I do volunteer to help out with any piece of
manual labour I could for the college. This also stems into my work; Occasionally, I will be asked to
help with unloading of big deliveries. This has always been the case since I was young because I was
much taller than most people. Now doing anything from carrying large boxes to moving furniture, I
always assist others when I can.
In summary, I see myself using everything I have learned, in and out of school, and everything I have
experienced to get far in the civil engineering industry. Using this course, I can pursue the future I
want and work to help and serve my friends, my loved ones, and this country I swore loyalty to. In
the future, I might just have the chance to work on something impactful much like the Forth Bridge.
