Understanding Structural Drawings and Beams

Structural drawings are blueprints created by certified professional engineers that detail the construction of buildings, focusing on structural elements rather than architectural features. Beams play a crucial role in distributing weight and ensuring stability, with various types such as continuous, simply supported, and cantilever beams. Additionally, ring beams are used to reinforce structures against horizontal forces, typically placed under ceiling and roof structures.

A structural drawing is a structural blueprint that includes mathematical elements that describe how

a building or structure should be created. Only structural drawings developed, stamped, and signed
by a certified professional engineer are valid.

They are often generated by qualified professional engineers using information from architectural
designs.

The Difference between Architectural and Structural Drawings: Structural vs. Architectural Drawings
Visual Distinction Architectural characteristics in a space, furniture, bathroom, and kitchen fixtures
are largely about line work.

Structural drawings, commonly known as engineering drawings, concentrate on the structural

aspects of a building.

Structure drawings are drawings that show structures. Slab and footing drawings are also structural
drawings! Civil drawings are involved with detailed earthworks, falls, and drainage, among other
things.

BEAM:

In building construction, a beam is a horizontal member spanning an opening and carrying a load
that may be a brick or stone wall above the opening, in which case the beam is often called a lintel
(see post-and-lintel system)

Types of beam structure

 Continuous beams. A continuous beam is one that has two or more supports that reinforce
the beam. ...
 Simply supported beams. Simply supported beams are those that have supports at both end
of the beam. ...
 Fixed beams. ...
 Overhanging beams. ...
 Cantilever beam.

What is the purpose of a beam in a building?

Its purpose is to establish a safe load path to evenly distribute weight across the foundations of a
building. Beams support the load of the building by withstanding the load pressure and resisting
bending
The minimum RCC beam size should not be less than 9 ʺ × 9 ʺ or 225mm × 225mm with the addition
of a 125mm slab thickness

Ring beams reinforce the building along its sides, sharing in the transmission of horizontal forces.
They are usually placed under the ceiling structures. It is recommended to make a reinforcing ring
beam under each ceiling structure, and another reinforcing ring beam under the roof structure.

Materials can vary.
