Give my IM route, deep IM. Avoid long-term therapies because of increased risk of toxicities. Patients with edema or ascites may have lower peak due to expanded extracellular fluid. Ensure adequate hydration of the client, before and after therapy.

Anti-pyretic, NSAIDS, Non-opiod analgesic Nursing Responsibility: Be aware that patients may be at risk of CV events, GI bleeding, renal toxicity; monitor accordingly. Do not use drug during labor, and delivery, serious adverse effects to the baby is possible. Report sore throat, fever, rash, itching, swelling in ankles or feet, changes in vision & black tarry stools/ Protect drug vials from light. Administer every 6 hours to maintain serum levels and control pain.

Nursing Responsibility: Advise patient that drug is only for short term use and to consult the physician if giving to children for longer than 5 days or adults for longer than 10 days. Advise patient or caregiver that many over the counter products contain acetaminophen; be aware of this when calculating total dailydose. Warn patient that high doses or unsupervised long term use can cause liver damage. Do a skin testing, before administering.

Observe patient for edema, especially if he's receiving corticosteroids; Flagyl IV RTU may cause sodium retention. Record number and character of stools when drug is used to treat amebiasis. Give drug only after Trichomonas vaginalis infection is confirmed by wet smear or culture or Entameba histolytica is identified. Instruct patient in proper hygiene. Tell patient to avoid alcohol and alcohol-containing drugs during and for at least 3 days after treatment course. Tell patient he may experience a metallic taste and have dark or red-brown urine.
