LITERATURE REVIEW:

The early 1980s marked a pivotal moment in the message display industry, witnessing the
emergence of diverse technologies. Among these, the Light Emitting Diode (LED) display
rapidly gained prominence, demonstrating a significant impact across various sectors, as
highlighted by Thomas (2004). From advertising and transportation to employee communication
and, notably, multi-million naira outdoor sports arenas, LED technology has revolutionized how
information is presented visually.

A digital message display board, at its core, is an electronic screen capable of presenting
alphanumeric characters and other information (Raj, 2008). While various display technologies
exist, LED displays have become the most prevalent, often favored due to their relatively lower
production and maintenance costs compared to alternatives. These displays utilize light-emitting
diodes to generate light, offering the capability to showcase a wide array of data, including news
feeds, flight information, factory automation updates, train schedules, and real-time news from
the internet (Frederick, 1997).

LED displays can be broadly categorized into two types: fixed character and variable character.
Fixed character displays have LEDs permanently arranged to form specific characters, limiting
the displayed messages. In contrast, variable character displays offer the flexibility to input and
change messages as needed, providing dynamic information presentation.

LEDs offer several advantages over traditional incandescent bulbs. Notably, their lack of a
filament eliminates the primary cause of bulb failure, resulting in significantly longer lifespan.
Furthermore, LEDs exhibit higher energy efficiency as a greater proportion of the electrical
energy is directly converted into light, with minimal energy lost as heat.

Historically, many early LED display message systems relied on The fundamental principle
behind LED operation lies in semiconductor physics. An LED is a semiconductor light source
commonly found in numerous electronic devices, such as lamps, traffic lights, and displays with
varying resolutions. When an LED is activated, electrons recombine with holes (positive charge
carriers) within the semiconductor material. This recombination process releases energy in the
form of photons, which manifest as visible light (Boylestad and Nashelsky, 2006). The energy
level of these released photons dictates the frequency, and consequently, the color of the emitted
light.

of a filament ends the primary cause of the failure of the bulb, resulting in a long time in lifetime.
