Abstract

Early romantic partnerships are becoming more prevalent and significant during
adolescence, leading to worries about their effects on academic success. Although
earlier studies have indicated negative correlations between romantic involvement and
educational achievement, the direct impacts remain ambiguous. This research intends
to explore how early romantic partnerships affect the academic performance of Grade
10 high school students in the Philippines. Implementing a quantitative descriptive
research approach, the study will conduct surveys among students to collect information
about their romantic relationships and academic results. The researchers will examine
the data to pinpoint possible patterns and trends, looking into the factors that lead
academic interruptions like undermining the students' academic stability, absenteeism
and dropout rates. This study aspires to deliver a detailed understanding of the intricate
relationship between romantic partnerships and academic performance during
adolescence, ultimately aiding in the creation of effective strategies to promote students’
well-being and academic achievements.
Chapter I

Introduction

To begin, students should be aware that early romantic relationships can

significantly impact their well-being and development, sometimes leading to problems
like academic distraction or depression.

In terms of historical context, earlier research on adolescent romantic relationships,

such as Eder in (1993) and Giordano et al. (2006), suggests that adolescents are
increasingly engaging in superficial romantic relationships, often lasting only a few
weeks or months without requiring long-term commitment, highlighting the importance
of romantic feelings in their daily lives. Subsequently, Johnson's 2023 study indicates
that early romantic relationships among teenagers increase their likelihood of
experiencing emotional distress and academic difficulties.

Regarding differing perspectives, most people are of the view that such relationships
can be harmful, causing distraction, emotional stress, and loss of academic
concentration. Conversely, there are individuals who think this can be a source of
emotional support, diminish feelings of loneliness, and improve motivation, and as a
result, academic performance could be better.
Concerning existing research, according to the research of Dr. Peggy C. Giordano,
Professor Emerita of Sociology at Bowling Green State University and a leading scholar
in adolescent social development (2023), love relationships in adolescence can have a
major impact on academic success. Specifically, the study, which questioned 572 dating
teenagers, discovered that a teen's own grades were substantially related to their
partner's grades, even after controlling for family history and peer impact. This research
implies that romantic relationships have a significant impact on adolescent academic
achievement.

Currently, early adolescent romantic relationships are becoming more common, offering
social development but also risks like social isolation and strained friendships.
Furthermore, Johnson (2023) found these relationships can promote risky behaviors
such as early sexual activity and alcohol use. Understanding these outcomes is crucial
for supporting grade 10 students' well-being.

Finally, the primary concern regarding romantic relationships in Grade 10 students is

the increased risk of teen pregnancy, which significantly disrupts academics. This risk
stems from emotional impulsivity, poor decision-making. The resulting academic
disruptions, including absenteeism and dropout, have lasting consequences for
students' educational and life trajectories.
Background of the Study

Students' early romantic relationships can have a great influence on their

academic performance. Though they provide emotional support and enhance self-
esteem, they tend to create distractions, emotional stress, and time management
problems.

Research shows that these relationships tend to bring about emotional development but
also lead to academic failure due to distractions and stress. According to studies, 30%
of students who are in relationships show lower performance, and the students in
relationships have a 20% higher likelihood of underachievement.

The most significant issue is that adolescents can be easily diverted, putting
relationships first before books. This makes them ignore important duties and tasks.

The youth organizations stress the importance of assistance in balancing relationships

and school work for the students. Romantic relationships are prevalent, but they can
lead to academic failure if not well managed.

A number of research studies have delved into how early romantic relationships
influence the growth of students. For instance, Brown and Lee (2021) reported that
students who had healthy relationships usually have enhanced social skills and control
of their emotions. However, a study by the American Psychological Association (2023),
found that students involved in romantic relationships often report lower grades
compared to those who are not romantically involved. Although these studies provide
information on possible advantages and disadvantages, there is little known about the
long-term impact of early romantic relationships on educational and professional paths.
This research seeks to fill this void by exploring the developmental paths of students
who have romantic relationships in their high school years.

This study examines the long-term effects of early romantic relationships on

students' growth, focusing on their educational and professional paths in high school.
While healthy relationships enhance social skills and emotional control, they often lead
to lower grades. The research aims to fill this gap in understanding these relationships'
effects.
.

Statement of the Problem:

Many students experience early romantic relationships, but it is unsure whether

these relationships positively or negatively affect their performance in academic. While
some students gain emotional support and motivation, others problem distractions, poor
time management, and increased stress, leading to low grades. This study aims to
explore the effect of early romantic relationships on students' academic performance
Specifically, this seeks the answers to the following questions:

1. How do early romantic relationships provide emotional support that may help
students maintain focus on their academic work?
2. What challenges do students in relationships face when trying to manage their
time between schoolwork and romantic commitments?
3. What can students do to maximize the benefits of early romantic relationships on
their studies?

Hypothesis:

There is a significant relationship in between early romantic relationship and

academic performance of Grade 10 students.

Significance of the Study:

Students: For Grade 10 Students, the results will give students a better understanding
of the possible impact of romantic relationships on their school performance and
emotional health. Such information can enable them to make informed decisions
regarding their relationships, learn healthy coping strategies, and manage the
challenges and opportunities presented during this phase of development.

Parents: For Parents, the research will provide useful insights into the lives of their
adolescent child, often eliciting a blend of protective concern and developmental
awareness. Parents may grapple with anxieties about their child's emotional and
physical safety, while simultaneously navigating the delicate balance of granting
increased home rule. By being aware of the possible effects of such relationships,
parents can offer more effective support and advice, helping to ensure healthy
relationship patterns and emotional strength.

Researchers: This study could greatly enhance our comprehension by producing fresh
insights, encouraging the creation of new theories, and broadening the limits of existing
concepts.

Future Researchers: This study might influence policy choices and real-world
applications in your area more significantly. The result will be helpful to deliver the
message and to expand the existing knowledge about the effects, potential risks and
conduct for further implemental solutions.

Scope

This research aims to analyze the effects of early romantic relationships on the
academic performance, emotional well-being, and social interactions of Grade 10
students. The study will specifically focus on self reported impacts from students
currently or recently involved in romantic relationships, providing insights into their
experiences within this context. The findings will contribute to understanding the
complexities of adolescent relationships and their potential influence on various aspects
of student life.
Delimitation

This study is limited to Grade 10 students from the following sections of Copernicus,
Curie, Dalton, Chadwick, and Boyle at Tala High School in the North of Caloocan City
during the academic year 2024-2025. Starting from the month of January to March,
participants will be purposely selected based on their current or recent involvement in
romantic relationship, excluding students without such experiences. This focused
selection and the reliance on self-reported data will define the boundaries of research
findings, limiting the generalizability to other student populations or broader relationship
dynamics.

Definition of Terms:

The researchers used operational definition to define the terminologies of the study.
