CHAPTER I

Introduction

This chapter presents the background of the study, conceptual framework, statements of the

problem, scope and limitation and Significance of the study.

Background of the study

The involvement of romantic relationships, a common aspect of human society, has a significant

impact on daily life. Although the reward system, including the dopamine, is frequently made more active or

functionally connected in response to stimulation associated to romantic love or being in a romantic

relationship, the anatomy behind these portions is yet unknown.

Romantic love can be regarded as a deep and meaningful affective state. Romantic love begins as

passionate love, which is a state of total absorption between two individuals (Berscheid and Walster, 1978).

A romantic relationship is defined as mutual, ongoing and voluntary interactions between two

partners that is characterized by specific expressions of affection and intimacy (Collins, et al., 2009).

Romantic love, which is essentially a human universal, is widespread across cultures throughout

the world (Jankowiak and Fischer, 1992)

Review of Related Literature

This chapter the literature relevant to the concept of present study. It is being analyze through

some studies and materials from the internet to provide significant and essential information for the

accomplishment of the studies. It is sought to collect claims of previous studies about the relationship

between Romantic Relationship and Students Academic Performance.

The changing importance of romantic relationship involvement to competence from late childhood

to late adolescence. Romantic relationships in adolescence is an important developmental task,

researchers of the adolescent “problem behavior syndrome” have documented that early sexual intercourse

is related to problems with conduct, academics, and chemical use.

Early romantic involvement in late childhood and early to middle adolescence may have negative

consequences for academic, job, and conduct domains of competence. Later in adolescence, romantic

relationship involvement loses its negative significance, perhaps as it becomes a normative developmental

task. Results highlight the need for developmental research on the origins and meaning of romantic

relationships, one of the most neglected aspects of peer relationships (Jennifer Neemann, Jon Hubbard,

Ann S Masten, 2018)

The romantic interactions also create a variety of challenges for adolescents. According to Zimmer-

Gembeck et al. (2001), the genuine or fantasy romantic relationships have contributed to teenagers’

emotional instability, affecting their development such as academic performance and interpersonal ability.

Additionally, early experiences with romantic relationships can have an enduring influence on marital

relationships (Furman & Shaffer, 2011)

Romantic relationship, a widespread feature of human society, is one of the most influential factors

in daily life. Although stimuli related to romantic love or being in a romantic relationship commonly result in

enhancement of activation or functional connectivity of the reward system, including the striatum, the

structure underlying romantic relationship-related regions remain unclear. Because individual experiences

can alter gray matter within the adult human brain, we hypothesized that romantic relationship is associated

with structural differences in the striatum related to the positive subjective experience of being in a romantic

relationship. Because intimate romantic relationships contribute to perceived subjective happiness, this

subjective enhancement of happiness might be accompanied by the experience of positive events related

to being in a romantic relationship (Hiroaki. et.al.2016)

In terms of neural underpinnings, romantic love has a specific neuropsychological signature,

including the release of hormones such as dopamine (Takahashi et al., 2015).

Motivation is a meta concept with well-researched theoretical constructs, such as expectancy-value

and intrinsic-extrinsic, and encompasses a myriad of related theories such as self-efficacy, goal theory,

theories of intelligence, choice theory, self-determination theory, and flow, among others(Jeff Irvine, 2018)

Romantic relationships constitute a new dimension in the adolescent’s social life, but little attention

so far has been paid to their importance in well-being. Defined as developmental tasks, they have been

associated both positive and negative outcomes, although their impact on well-being has not yet been

clarified (Mercedes Gómez-López, Carmen Viejo, Rosario Ortega-Ruiz, 2019)

This study by David Tina was conducted to discover whether or not there is an association between

academic performance and involvement in a relationship among undergraduate college students.

We were able to identify that the Undergraduate university students involved

in a relationship tend to view them differently. It was found out that having a romantic relationship is

associated with increase in class attendance and a decrease in GPA. Those engaged in the relationship

for more than year were attending more than their counterparts who are less than one year in the

relationship. However, despite the attendance, we found out that their GPA kept decreasing. A study of

CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter presents the research design, research environment, research participants, research

instrument, sampling technique, data gathering and statistical treatment.

Research Design

The researchers use a qualitative research design, which is appropriate for this study because it

relied on words rather than numbers. This design is used by the researchers to express the feelings,

emotions, and individual perceptions of the respondents in order to understand the overall assessment. It is

used to gain an understanding of the underlying reasons and opinions.

Qualitative research is to learn more about how people view the world. While there are multiple

techniques in qualitative research they all share flexibility of retaining rich meaning when interpreting data.

(Moser A, Korstjens I,2017).

A qualitative research method used to identify patterns in recorded communication is content

analysis. To conduct content analysis, you collect data systematically from a set of text, which can be

written, spoken, or visual. (Bodiongan.ET. AL,2019).

A semi-structured interview is open, allowing new ideas to emerge during the interview should

usually be planned ahead of time. It is generally advantageous for interviewers to prepare an interview

guide, which is an informal group of topics and questions that the interviewers can ask in various ways for

different participants. Interview guide assisted the researchers in focusing and interviewing on the topic at

hand without limiting them to ask specific format. This flexibility allows interviewers to tailor their questions

to the interview situation and the people being interviewed (Irog-Irog, Y. ET. AL,2019)
Research Environment

This study will be conducted at Pagadian City National High School, Senior High School building.

Pagadian City National High School, Senior High department offers two (2) to tracks which are the

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) and Technical Vocational and Livelihood (TVL). There are total

of four (4) sections in Senior High School Building, two (2) from grade 11(A and B) and same as Grade 12.

Research Participant

The participants of this study will be the Senior High School Students. These students will the

source of data in terms of academic performance.

Sampling Technique

It is rarely possible to gather data from every member of a group of individuals you are

researching. Therefore, you choose a sample. The person that will actually take part in the study is known

as sample.

In this study, the researchers will be applying the purposive sampling in choosing a participants or

respondents. “Purposive” or “convenience” sampling is the most popular ( and straightforward) technique

for choosing participants for focus groups. In other words, you choose the community members you believe

will give you the most accurate information. It doesn’t have to be a random selection.

So to choose participants that can give the researchers the most accurate information, researchers

will choose the Senior High School Students who is in relationship. A purposive sample is a non-probability

sample that is selected based on characteristics of a population and the objective of the study.

Research Instrument

In gathering data and information needed for the study, the researchers will distribute the

questionnaire-checklist and conduct interviews. The questionnaire-checklist consist of series of pre-

determined statement and questions related to the main categories of the independent variable of the topic

that is answerable bye "yes" or "no".

One of the most common methods for gathering data is the use of questionnaires.

They provide a convenient method for learning information about a specific population. A questionnaire is a

prepared self-report form used to obtain information from subjects through either written or vocal

responses.

Data Gathering

Before the start of the survey and distribution of the questionnaires, the researchers will make and

secure an approval letter to the adviser to get enough time for organizing and meet the target deadline. The

researchers will ask permission from the adviser of each Senior High School to conduct study in their

elective classes. The researchers will distribute the questionnaires to the respondents.

After that, the researchers will collect all the responses of the respondents and formulate the results of the

questionnaires. The researchers will list all the data gathered.

Statistical Treatment

The data that will be gathered will be subjected to the following statistical method and techniques.

To analyse and interpret data, descriptive statistics will be utilizing such as percentage, mean as a measure

of average and standard deviation as a measure of variability numerical observation. To the hypothesis for

significant correlation between the independent and dependent variable, Pearson correlation coefficient r

will be used. This is the formula to find the Pearson correlation coefficient.

This is a measure of the strength of linear association/relation between two variables. This test will

be used to determine the significant relationship between Romantic Relationship and Students Academic

Performance of Senior High School Students in Pagadian City National High School. The decision rules

state that if p-value is less than or equal to the level of significance, the null hypothesis will be rejected

yielding a significant result. Otherwise, the null hypothesis is accepted. Furthermore, hypothesis will be
tested at a=0.05 level of significance. Finally, to carry out all of this statistical analysis, the predictive

analytic software statistical package or the Social Science (IBM SPSS statistics 20) will be used.
