• Islam is a monotheistic faith centered around belief in
the one God (Allah).
• Allah is viewed as the sole God—creator, sustainer,
and restorer of the world.
• Islam is the second-largest religion in the world after
Christianity, with about 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide.
• The word “Islam” means “submission to the will of
God.”
• Followers of Islam are called Muslims.
• Mosques are places where Muslims worship.

Historical Origins of Islam
• Islam was founded in the early 7th century by the Prophet Muhammad.
• Muhammad believed he was the last and greatest in a series of prophets along
with Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
