INTRODUCTION

Rationale

In Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School Integrated

Senior High School some students engaging romantic relationship now a days

and it can affect their academic performance if they cannot manage their time

they only focuses in their love ones and they out of their mind, it may affects

their grades, instead of studying at night their priority is to chat or text with

someone they love, make some long conversation at night and they don’t

think the assignments, projects and classes for tomorrow. Just for the

important thing that can ruin their life.

We choose this topic, as a student experiencing having romantic

relationship while studying. Being in a relationship can dramatically affect the

person life especially young adults. Maintaining a balance between school

and personal relationship is important. The teens all over the world notice

passionate feelings. This feeling can be exciting or even confusing at first.

Although later in life they may refer to temporary affairs as infatuation rather

than the real thing. Some love stories are the lessons in what not to do when

you fall in love. Romantic relation become more and more significant to

adolescents in their school world as they also develop from puberty towards

late adolescents in which it shows how relevant is romantic relationship

among adolescents.
The purpose of this study is to inform the others who engaging the

romantic relationship that do not love too much, as a student it can affect their

academic performance and their personal life if they are seriously in their

feelings. For that they can choose the right choice if the studies or engaging

the relationship at their early age. We are not against of the person fall in love

but you think first before you enter the kingdom of love. Just wait the right time

and the right person will come into your life.

Research Question

 What level of student’s romantic relationship?

 What level of students’ academic performance?

 Is there a significant difference between having romantic relationship and

students’ academic performance?

 Is there relationship between romantic relationship and students’ academic

performance?

Hypothesis

The following hypotheses will be tested at 0.5 of significance:

 There is no significant relationship between romantic relationship and the

academic performance of the students.

 There is no domain in romantic relationship significant difference the

academic performance of the students.

 Adolescents quality of romantic relationship contain long lasting effects on

self-esteem and shape personal values concerning romance, proximate

relationship, and sexuality. (Gomez,2005)

 Dating relationship also lay teens as risk of sexually transmitted infections

and pregnancy. (Furman, 2002)

 Independent Variable

Adolescents quality of romantic relationship contain long lasting effects on

self-esteem and shape personal values concerning romance, proximate

relationship, and sexuality. (Gomez,2005).

Dating relationship also lay teens as risk of sexually transmitted infections

and pregnancy. (Furman, 2002).

For having sexual intercourse, the strongest predictor is recent

involvement in a romantic relationship. (Bounchey,2003) .

By swapping benefits to each person involved in the relationship

interaction are perpetuated. (Wang,2004)

There are definite exterior situations (factors) which ensue in the course of

relationship and these situations thwarted the need to belong (Myer, 2005).

Relationship helps develop one’s personality. It is a way of knowing one’s unique

qualities of opposite sex, at the same time picking a life partner. Apart from,

researchers theorized that romantic relationship is imperative to the progress of

adolescents in variant aspects such as “transformation of family relationships,

close relationship with peers, sexuality and careers planning” (Pelt,2004).

Adolescents play an important role to adolescents as it assembles the ability for

committed relationships. (Luqman,2009). Romantic relationship contains physical

contact which causes chemical education to the person’s involved. At the instant

process Love and confidence in which they are hunger for (Raman,2010).

Beyers & Seiffge- Krenke (2010) stated that a higher quality of romantic

relationship during mid-adolescence predicted the quality of relationship with

romantic partners emerging adulthood.

Madsen & Collins (2011) stated that earlier positive romantic experiences

during adolescence predicted the quality of romantic relationships at age 20-21,

above and beyond the contribution of earlier relationship experiences with both

parents and peers

 Dependent Variable

Stability trust and care which personal relationship provide. Romantic

relationship can increase learners, sense of belonging, self-respect, self-

acceptance and provide positive climate for learning thus increase academic

performance. (Corpuz,2007)

The time management of every student which involved in romantic

relationship strongly affects their academic performance. She said that the more

spent by their partner, the lesser the time they will spend in studying.

(Freeman,2006)

According to Erikson (as cited in Feldman, 2009) people proceed through

eight stages of psychosocial development across their lives. He suggested that

each stage requires the resolution of a crises or conflict and may produce both
positive and negative outcomes. During the identity-versus-role confusion period

an adolescent feels pressure to identify what to do with his life. These pressures

come at a time of major physical changes and adolescent find a period an

especially difficult one, thus peer group and close relationship becomes

increasingly important in clarifying their personal identities. Erikson added that

identity versus-role confusion stage marks a pivotal point in psychosocial

development, paving the way for continued growth and the future development of

personal relationship. In another way, romantic relationship gives more negative

effects on the academic performance of adolescents.

As stated by Crissey (2006) in her study about impact of romantic

relationship on high school girls, there is really a challenge in "balancing romantic

relationship and academic performance" in a teenager's life. It gives pressure on

how to maintain the romantic side and the academic works as well. She also

pointed out that there is more than the pressure someone will going to feel if

there is a competition inside the classroom for the academic awards at the end of

the school year.

The time spent with the partner would consume much time that must be

allotted for studying; taking into consideration the time management of a student

being involved in romantic relationship affects the academic performance.

(Mehl&Pennebaker 2008)

Graetz (1995) conducted a study on study on romantic relationship status

of the parents of students and concluded that the socio-economic background

has a great impact on student’s academic performance.

A student who is engage in a relationship may involve in many factors of

struggling contributes to student’s grades, the purpose of this research was to

know the effects of dating on a student's academic performance. Sgobbo (2000)

Quatman, Sampson, Robinson and Watson (2001) The relationship

between dating status and academic achievement was examine by the

researcher’s motivation, depression, and self-esteem. High school student’s

frequency of dating and not so much the level of commitment was focus on this

research. Relationship between dating and lower academic performance was the

showed results.

To define a relationship, dating frequency and level of commitment is a

must. The highest level of commitment was being marriage and more than one

person frequent dating. Chilman and Meyer (1963).

(Aronson, 2010) Actions and feelings are influenced by social groups

including social influence of the groups, social influence looks at how individual

thoughts, social influence/peer groups were one of the dominant themes in the

observations, survey, and literature.

Theoretical Framework

The effects of romantic relationship on the academic performance of

Grade 11 Senior High School students in Nabunturan National Comprehensive

High School, we will use two important theories which will also introduce the main

variables of this study.

Myers (2010) supported this theory by stating that the people who find

supportive person whom they can disclose makes them feel accepted and prized.

Headed that this situation is associated with the arousal of behavior (i, e

irrepressible joy and happiness) to the persons involved which causes them to be

driven by their goals in life. However, Myer (2010) stated that there are certain

external situations (factors) which occur in the course or relationship and these

situations thwarted the need to belong.

Figure 1: The Conceptual Framework of the Study

In figure II the romantic relationship focused on the differences of

gender on high school academic outcomes which were influence by romantic

relationship (Crissey, 2013)

On the other hand, the impact of romantic relationship on the academic

performance implies that factors assumed to affect academic performance of

students such as personal relationship vary in each race. (Phepls,2014)

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to determine the effects of romantic relationship on

the academic performance of Grade 11 Senior high school students. This found

out how they manage their time in which study and romantic side is involved. It

determines the level of motivation and anxiety of the respondents. This study

highlights the effects of time management, motivation and anxiety level of

students who are involved romantic relationship on their academic performance.

This study would also raise the awareness of the parents of the students who

are synchronizing their time in both academic work and romantic aspect. These

findings could guide their children to prioritize their study and set-aside the

frequent interactions which can affect the academic performance of their

children. For the teachers, the information that they would get in this study would

help them guide and give proper attention to their students who are involve in

romantic relationship so that teachers could also help in increasing the academic

performance of their students not just by teaching lessons on the subjects they

handled.

Definition of Terms

Romantic Relationship-it refers between two people involving love

and saying things to show that you love someone. And it refers to person that

show how they feel of their love ones and thinks a lot about love.

Academic Performance-it refers to your knowledge how you handle

your studies and doing things that can good to your performance.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This design used survey questionnaire which were distributed to the

respondents in order to attain the main objective of the study which is to

examine the effects of romantic relationship on students’ academic

performance. The survey or the research itself tried to describe, analyze and

interpret the status of the respondents.

The design is a non-experimental correlation research. This design

investigated the relationship of the variables without manipulating them. The

two main variables evaluated were academic performance and romantic

relationship which involves the time management, levels of motivation and

anxiety.

Research Locale

The study was conducted within the NNCHS SHS in the Municipality of

Nabunturan specifically the Senior High School involving romantic

relationship.
Population and Sample

The respondents of this study were researchers selected Grade 11

students in the selected Secondary Schools of Division of Compostela Valley

to Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School – Integrated Senior High

School. A random sampling was used in selecting the respondents.

ResearchInstrument

In order to answer specific sub-problems in our study, survey

questionnaires will be distributed to the respondents. Interview to one of our

respondents will also be the relationship and its adverse effects on their academic

achievement. Each questionnaire will have 3 parts. The first part of the questionnaire

will regard the profile of the respondent (i.e., name, gender, gwa). The second part

will comprise the status of time management of the respondent. The third and fourth

part will consider the levels of motivation and anxiety of the respondent as a student.

In the given statements, the respondents will be tasked to know and indicate if they

strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree or strongly disagree in this last two parts.

Range of Measure Descriptive Equivalent Interpretation

4 A Agree

3 U Undecided

2 D Disagree

1 DA Strongly Disagree
Data Gathering Procedure

The data were gathered through the following procedures.

The researchers made a letter to ask permission from Senior High

School administration to conduct the study. The letter was approved by Senior

High School Assistant Principal and it was endorsing to the NNCHS principal.

When the request was granted, the researchers distributed the survey

forms to the respondents of the study. The instruction was set to safeguard

true, pure, and comprehensive answer. Each item in the survey from was

explained clearly for the students’ respondents to understand each question.

To ensure that the questionnaire serves it purpose, true researchers

personally retrieved immediately after answering.

All reactions of the respondents were checked and solidified through

Micro soft word. The merged information was summated to the analysis for

sitting factual treatment.

The researchers analyze and interpreted the result based on the aim

of the study.
Statistical Treatment of Data

In order to draw an objective interpretation and conclusions, the data

was subjected to statistical test, to determine the significance of the relationship

between independent and dependent variables.

1. Frequency. This refers to determine the number of respondents who

answered each item.

2. Mean. The average number of respondents who answered the item according

to Downie and Health (1990).

3. Person r. Coefficient. This will inform us the degree of relationship between

the independent variables.

4. T- test. This was utilized to determine the significant difference between

academic performance of students and romantic relationship.
