I.

OBJECTIVES
Within 40-minute class period, students will be able to:
a. Content standards: Demonstrate understanding of an area of a circle.
b. Performance standards: Apply knowledge of area, volume and temperature in
mathematical problems and real-life situations.
c. Learning competency: Find the area of a circle. M5ME-IVa-74

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Area of a circle

III. PROCEDURE/LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Teacher’s Activities Pupils’ Activities
A. Preliminary activities
Good morning class! Good morning sir!

Before we start our lesson, let’s bow down our heads

for the prayer.

(The teacher leads the prayer.) (Prayer)

(Checking of Attendance)
Who is absent today? (The students tell the
teacher the names of their
absent classmates.)
3. Class rules
Now before we proceed to our lesson, I will group
you in to 4. Throughout our lesson I will be asking
questions. And each questions answered correctly by
one of you will be rewarded with a star. The group
with most stars accumulated will have a reward after
the class. Understood? Yes sir!

B. Lesson proper
1. Drill - Multiplication flashcard

Okay now let’s have a short drill. I will show you

multiplication flashcards. If you know the answer just
raise your hand quickly. Okay? Yes sir!
(Drill proceeds)

2. Motivation
Let’s play a game! I will give you a set of numbers
like 1,18,5,1. This set of number has a corresponding
word to it. To get the word all you have to do is
replace those numbers with letters corresponding to
it. 1 is “A” since the first letter in the alphabet is “A”,
18 is “r” since the 18th letter in the alphabet is “r”, 5
is “e” and 1 is “a”. What’s the word from this set of
numbers? Area!

Very good! I will give you another set of numbers.

When you get the word please raise your hand before
you give me the word. Okay? Yes sir!

(game proceeds) (game proceeds)

16,9 – pi
19,17,21,1,18,5,4 – squared
3,9,18,3,12,5 – circle
18,1,4,9,21,19 – radius
4,9,1,13,5,20,5,18 – diameter

3. Presentation

I have a word problem here. Everybody read.

“Dexter has round clock in his room. He wants to

know the area of the clock. What is the area of the
clock if it has 2 inches radius?” (Students read the
problem)
4 Discussion

What does Dexter want to know?

He wants to know the area
of his clock.
Very good! What is the shape of Dexter’s clock?
Round.
Circle.
Okay very good! Aside from a clock, what other
things you can see around that are circle in shape?
(Students give their
answers)
Very good! So today we are going to learn about
finding the area of a circle.

Let’s go back to the problem. Everybody read the

problem again. (Students read the
problem)
To get the area of a Dexter’s clock we need to use
this formula. A = π r². “A” stands for area, πs value is
3.14 and r stands for radius. The radius is the distance
from the center of a circle to its edge .According to
the problem, Dexter’s clock has a radius of 2 inches.
So now we have A= 3.14 x 2². What are we going to
do when a number is squared? (Students give their
answer)

We multiply the number by itself. So 2 x 2 is equal

to?
4!
So now we have A = 3.14 x 4. Therefore, the area
Dexter’s clock is 12.56 inches.

Let’s have another example. We have a circle here

with a radius of 3cm. Now let’s try to find the area
of the circle with a radius of 3 centimeter. First we
need to write the formula A = π r². Now we substitute
the terms. What’s the value of pi?
3.14.
What was the given radius?
3cm.
Very good! So now we have A = 3.14 x 3cm². Since
3 is squared what are we going to do?
(Students give their
answer)
We multiply it by its self. So 3 x 3 is equal to?
6!
Very good! Now we have A = 3.14 x 6. What’s the
answer?
(Students give their
Very good! So the area of the circle is 18.84cm. Let’s answer)
have another example. Let’s find the area of a circle
with a diameter of 2m.
