1. Radius
2. Circumference
3. Diameter

Elaboration of the Concept

- The teacher will have the discussion of the
lesson.

The distance around a circle is called its

circumference. The distance across a circle through its
center is called its diameter.
We use the Greek letter (read as “Pī” with a short i) to
represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to
its diameter. When rounded off, = 3.14.
To get the circumference of a circle, we learned that
the formula is: C =𝝅×𝒅 𝑜𝑟 𝑪=𝟐×𝝅×𝒓.
For simplicity, we use = 3.14. Note that the diameter of
a circle is twice as long as the radius. This relationship is
expressed as d = 2 x r.

For example: If the radius of the circle is 6cm then find

its circumference.

Given: Radius = 6cm

Circumference = 2πR

= 2 x 3.14 x 6
= 37.68 cm

2nd example: If the diameter of the circle is 9cm then

find its circumference.

Given: Diameter = 9cm

Circumference = π D

= 3.14 x 9
= 28.26cm

3rd example: If the radius of the circle is 12cm them

find the circumference of the circle?

Given: Radius =12

Circumference = 2πR

= 2 x 3.14 x 12
= 39.68cm

Diameter formula: The diameter formula of a circle is

twice its radius. Diameter = 2 × Radius d = 2r or D = 2R

If the diameter of a circle is known, its radius can be

calculated
as: r = d/2 or R = D/2

For example: If the radius of a circle is 9m, then what is

the diameter?

Given: R=9m
D= ?

Formula: D = 2R

Solution:
D= 2(9cm)
D=18cm
2nd example: if the diameter is 55cm, then what is the
radius of the circle?

Given:D=55cm
R=?
Formula: R = D/2

Solution: R = 55/2
R= 27.5cm

The area of a circle is the total region that is bounded

by the circumference. Think of the area of a circle as
the amount of surface enclosed inside the circle.

The formula in finding the area of a circle is:

A = π x r^2 or A = π x r x r

In this formula, "A," is the area, "r" is the radius, and “π”
is constant and approximately equal to 3.14, the ratio
of the circumference to its diameter. Recall that the
radius (r) of a circle is the distance from its center to
any point on the circle.

Let's look at some examples involving areas of circles.

Use = 3.14 in all examples and calculations.

Example 1: The radius of a circle is 3 meters. What is the

area of the circle?

Solution:
A= πxrxr
A = 3.14 x (3 m) x (3 m)
A = 3.14 x (9 m2)
A = 28.26 m2
Example 2: The diameter of a circle is 8 centimeters.
What is the area of the circle?

Solution:
d=2xr A=πxrxr
8 cm = 2 x r A = 3.14 x (4 cm) x (4 cm)
8 cm ÷ 2 = r A = 3.14 x (16 cm2)
r = 4 cm A = 50.24 cm2

Example 3: If a circular pool has an area of 78.5 square

meters. What is the radius of the pool?

Solution:
A=πxrxr
78.5 m2 = 3.14 x r x r
78.5 m2 ÷ 3.14 = r x r
25 m2 = r x r
r=5m

Example 4: Let’s answer this problem:

Mr. Suarez is purchasing materials to build a do-it-

yourself trampoline for his kids. If he wants the diameter
of the mat to be 14 feet long, what is the area of the
nylon that he needs to purchase?

Solution:
d=2xr A=πxrxr
14 ft = 2 x r A = 3.14 x (7 ft) x (7 ft)
14 ft ÷ 2 = r A = 3.14 x (49 ft2)
r = 7 ft A = 153.86 ft^2

Therefore, the length of nylon that Mr. Suarez needs for

his trampoline is 153.86 square feet.
C. Engagement GROUP ACTIVITIES:

The teacher will be divided the class into three (3)

groups and each group must present what activity
they will get, that must be finish within 15 minutes.

Activity : You Complete Me!

Directions: Solve for the circumference given the radius

or diameter of a circle. Fill in the table. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity : Find me!

Solve the following.

1. Find the area of a circle with radius 3cm.

2. Find the circumference of a circle with diameter
20cm.
3. If the radius of the circle is 7m, then the area will be?

Activity : Complete Me!

Directions: In the diagram, the circle has a radius of 6

cm. Find the area of the circle by filling out the blanks
to complete the solution. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

Solution:
A = 𝜋 x ______ x r
(1)
A = ______ x (6 cm) x (______ cm)
(2) (3)
A = 3.14 x (______)
(4)
A = ______ cm2
