Term 1 Week 6

Kia Ora tatou katoa Camp Bannockburn was a stunning week of adventure, challenge, and self management for our year 6 students. They experienced many feel the fear challenges and came through the other side with a sense personal achievement and success. All involved thoroughly enjoyed the week, our parent helpers were amazing and their hard work and support ensured that we all returned happy, safe and with lifetime memories to keep. We were fortunate that the Central Otago weather was kind to us most days and the students enjoyed a large variety of challenge activities on the water. The highlight was the Yachting and also the annual Gunge War! This year our EOTC provider arrived at camp with no GUNGE! Mr Tucker had to do some very quick thinking, phone calls, and a GOOGLE search and spent the morning making his own version of GUNGE! The students would have been deeply disappointed if the Gunge war had to be cancelled! This is a highlight and great fun! I hope that your students have shared many stories with you, we will be sharing the camp photos and videos with you on Tuesday March 27 at 7pm at the Southland Museum movie theatre. Meanwhile back at school the students are engaged in our inquiry How my body works? I have observed many interesting learning activities in all areas of the school linked to the inquiry. Students have a raised awareness of a balanced diet and healthy lunch box choices, and are bringing a better selection of raw vegetable or fruit brain food. Please remember that all students require a brain food snack every day and with our changed interval break these are vital for learning. We are preparing for the Sports day with the Phoenix Zone and the year 1 students are still enjoying the Sport Southland Move and Improve programme. Relay teams will be practising daily. Students are working hard on their self management strategies and we are encouraging them to be responsible for the following:

Managing Self : I can carry in my bag and hang it up without help / get my book bag out and put it away and explain why I am taking responsibility for my bag: BOOK BAG. I can be responsible for what I say and understand the impact on others. Relating to Others: I can share my ideas with the group and listen to the ideas of others. I can work with people I know and people I dont know in a positive way. I can evaluate how the group is working and suggest different roles to make the group work in a more positive way.

If you are participating in the Relay for Life best of luck! Marlene

We have made a conscientious start to the year with 2 meetings held already. Our fundraising focus remains the safe reinstatement of the Jungle Gyms in some form or other for our "little monkeys" to play on. As you may appreciate this is a comprehensive issue involving several Government agencies, the Board of Trustees, the PTA and funding agencies. If you have knowledge or experience in building, safety, or layout our Jungle Gym sub committee would love to hear your suggestions. Contact Gillian Graham or Liz Knight through the office. We are delighted to have replaced our much loved and much used BBQ which was showing signs of its years of service. The "Sausage Sizzle Queens" can be seen cooking up an even more delicious morsel on Fridays now! Thanks to Janine Lamb-Turnout and her wonderful efforts to get us a great deal on the new BBQ. Thanks also to those carrying on the good work in our community by helping our students and their families where we can. Have a great weekend. Good luck to those involved in the Relay for Life! Lyndal
