CHAPTER – 1

1.1 INTRODUCTION:

The undergraduate engineering education at Thapar Institute of Engineering and

Technology is embodied with 3 facets namely primary understanding, detailed study
and application. Students are given basic education, provided detailed background
in one chosen area of engineering and finally shown how to apply these concepts
with the above spirit, the Bachelor of Engineering 3rd year group design project for
Civil Engineering students play an important role of synthesizing the various
elements of undergraduate education.

Students are posed with one engineering problem challenge to create a model
of Guest House for the institute on Auto Desk Revit.
In about 12 months, all students of BE/B.Tech. 3rd year have to work in teams and
arrive at different proposal as engineering solution to the problem posed to them.
The objective of the project is to gain hands-on experience in tackling the Planning,
Analysis and design issues in open- ended structural design projects. We are expected
to explore the design practices prevalent, understand the various aspects considered,
i.e.
1) Planning architectural design
2) Load calculation
3) Structural design

1.2. SCOPE/CONDITIONS GIVEN FOR PROJECT:

PROBLEM DEFINITION:
Thapar Institute is planning to build a state-of-the-art guest house to accommodate 70
guests.
Guest house should hold to provide accommodation for visiting Professors, Esteemed
delegates, Campus placement recruitment teams, and other guests. The aesthetic of the
building should be a theme based and should have an aesthetically pleasing grand
entrance
with ample lobby area. Students can themselves decide the location of guest house.
The guest house should fulfill following requirements:
In all, the constructed area of the building should not exceed 60% of the plot area
(0.75 Acre).
The structure must be G+2 storey.
Guest house should have at least 5 premium suites, approximately 60% single seater

5
rooms and 40% double seater rooms and dormitory for drivers.
Three dining areas for guests, one separate dining area for workers and drivers.
Two meeting rooms/conference rooms and hall for hosting gala dinner.
Few separate rooms for service workers.
Sufficient green area with landscaping.
GYM and Recreation facilities for guests such as indoor games, etc.
Parking space for at least 10 cars and also for bicycles. These may be distributed
among more than one parking lot.
The proposed guest house should address the following key challenges:
1. Functionality and Space Optimization:
Design a layout that maximizes the use of available space, and efficient utilization of
areas for different functions.
Ensure appropriate zoning and segregation to create harmonious spaces that cater to
the specific needs of various businesses and visitors. Consider one building should
be of G+2 storey and other two blocks can be one storey or more.
2. Structural Integrity:
Devise a robust structural design that can withstand the gravity load.
Structural designing of one G+2 storey building has to be performed considering all
dead and live loads.
3. Aesthetics, Sustainable and Green Initiatives:
Create an iconic architectural design that enhances the urban landscape and
complements the surrounding buildings with proper ventilation and orientation.
Incorporate green spaces, public areas, and recreational sports for kids to promote a
sense
of community and improve the overall environment.
Implement passive design strategies that leverage natural light, ventilation, and
shading to reduce the need for artificial heating and cooling.
Integrate environmentally friendly features, such as rainwater harvesting, and
waste management systems.
Propose the green materials to reduce the CO2 emission and utilization of waste
materials.
4. Accessibility and Inclusivity:
Ensure compliance with disability-friendly standards, providing easy access for all
individuals, including those with mobility challenges.
6. Regulatory Compliance:
Adhere to all local building codes, zoning regulations, and Environmental guidelines.
Incorporate regulations for fire exit.

6
REQUIREMENTS OF STUDENT PROPOSAL
Students are required to give a proposal which should include the following:
Architectural drawing of the structure, in accordance with Building bye-laws
Design of various structural elements as per relevant Indian codal guidelines
Detailed structural drawings of various elements
Design of various allied services (Road services, Rain water harvesting, waste disposal
area,
etc.)
Detailed cost estimate for the project.
Various Stages of Planning & Design
■ Preparing Site Plan
■ Calculating Design Requirements
■ Blocking & Circulation
■ Preparing Concept Drawings
■ Preparing Working Architectural Drawings
■ Writing Detailed Specifications
■ Green materials
■ Structure Design
■ Structural Drawings can made using RCDC software, but the optimization of
structural should be done

2.2. GREEN AREA & FLOOR AREA CALCULATION:

2.3.1 TOTAL AREA

The total area of the plot is 1800sqm.

2.3.2 CALCULATING USABLE AREA

Construction area (60% of given area) = 1200m2

2.3.3 CALCULATING NUMBER OF ROOMS

As per the question
Total no. of guests to be accommodated - 70
Minimum no. of premium suites – 5
Provided premium suites – 6
No. of people accommodated in 1 premium suite – 3
Total no. of people accommodated in premium suites – 6*3=18
No. of single seater rooms to be provided – 60% of remaining = 0.60*(70-18) = 31.2
No. of singe seater rooms provided = 31
No. of double seater rooms to be provided – 40% of remaining = (0.4*52)/2 = 10
No. of double seater rooms provided = 16

2.4 STAIR CALCULATION

Main stairs case

Riser = 150mm
Thread = 300mm
Total rise = 2000mm
1 riser = 2000/150
=14 risers
Thus provide 14 risers (13 steps) each with one riser of 150mm and 300mm thread

Emergency staircase
Riser = 182mm
Thread = 300mm
Total rise = 2000mm
1 riser = 2000/182
=11 risers
Thus provide 11 risers (10 steps) each with one riser of 182mm and 300mm thread

2.5 STAIR CALCULATION

For simply supported section

Ln/d = 20

1.For Slab 1, Lx = 6000mm

6000/d = 20
d = 300mm
Self weight of slab = 25 x 0.300 = 7.5 KN/m2

2.For Slab 2, Lx = 4000mm

4000/d = 20
d = 200mm
Self weight of slab = 25 x 0.200 = 5.00 KN/m2

3.For Slab 3, Lx = 6000mm

6000/d = 20
d = 300mm
Self weight of slab = 25 x 0.300 = 7.5 KN/m2

4.For Slab 3, Lx = 7700mm

7700/d = 20
d = 285mm
Self weight of slab = 25 x 0.285 = 9.625 KN/m2

5.Weight of brick blast = unit weight x thickness

= 0.1 x 18.8
= 1.88 KN/m2

6.Weight of mortar = unit weight x thickness

= 18.67 x 0.03
= 0.56 KN/m2

7.Weight of tiles = unit weight x thickness

= 27.5 x 0.1
= 2.75 KN/m2

8.Weight of washroom wall = unit weight x thickness
