long, creamy finish. Again, said
Mittan, it’s a more food-friendly
version of the wine.
Growing the winery remains
part of the Mittans’ future plans,
although it will be gradual. For
one thing, Kevin and Jill remain
the winery’s only staff, serving as

bottling line and sales and
marketing department. (They do

holding down the fort.)
Their initial vintage, 2004,
produced 800 cases. Since then,
they’ve steadily increased to
1,500 in 2005, 2,200 in 2006
and about 3,000 in 2007.
Midlife Crisis is one of about a
dozen wineries with tasting
rooms in downtown Paso Robles,
which is generating a generous
amount of buzz nationally for its
combination of top-notch wine
tasting options along with cutting
edge restaurants – all within
comfortable walking distance. A
recent issue of Bon Apetit maga-
zine even named Paso Robles one
of that nation’s top small towns
for “foodies.”
As for the winery’s name, the
inspiration came from an email in
which Jill’s brother, responding to
the news the couple was starting
a winery, wrote: “Wouldn’t a
sports car have been cheaper.”
A sports car being the symbol
of a mid-life crisis, the connection
was made and a name was born.
And now visitors to the Midlife
Crisis tasting room will find
stickers with sports cars on them
and stress balls shaped like a little
red sports car. The tasting room
can be found about a block from
Paso Robles downtown park
plaza, at the corner of Pine and
13th streets. It is open from 10:30
a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. You can also
visit the winery’s new website at
www.midlifecrisiswinery.com, or
call at (805) 237-8730.

EBERLE WINERY
Celebrating 30 Years
of Fine Winemaking
in Paso Robles
by Marcy DeGarimore

G
ary Eberle is a man who lives with passion – passion for life,
passion for wine, and, most importantly, a passion for Paso
Robles. His vision to create a world-class, wine-growing region
began in 1973 when he founded the fourth winery in Paso Robles
(there are now nearly 200) and the first local winery to distribute wines
on a national and international basis. After creating the Paso Robles
Appellation in 1983, Gary dedicated his life’s work to educating people
about the region as a whole and, specifically, about his own Eberle
wines.
All that passion paid off. To date, Eberle is one of the highest award-
winning wineries in the United States. Eberle Winery specializes in vari-
etals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Barbera,
Zinfandel, Syrah and Muscat Canelli. In fact, Gary Eberle was the first
American winemaker to grow and produce a 100% Syrah wine. Today,
all of Eberle’s wines are grown in Paso Robles and aged in French and
American oak barrels in 17,000 square feet of underground caves. The
winery offers complimentary wine tasting and tours of the caves, which
take place daily every half-hour. Eberle is also well known for its
monthly Guest Chef Winemaker Dinners featuring some of the most
talented chefs from around the world. Former chefs include Michel
Richard, Susan Spicer, Joyce Goldstein, Scott Boswell and Billy Reid.
Visit Eberle Winery on any given weekend and you just might see
Gary himself, behind the barbecue offering complimentary appetizers to
visiting guests. What you’ll always find, however, are world-class wines
in a relaxed atmosphere, complimentary tastings and fascinating tours,
two friendly standard poodles to greet you at the door, and a taste of the
passion that helped make Paso Robles Wine Country what it is today.
Join us in 2009 as Eberle Winery celebrates 30 years of fine wine-
making in Paso Robles! We’ll celebrate with special sales in the Tasting
Room, events at the winery, cruises to Costa Rica and the Baltic States
and more!
Eberle Winery is located at 3810 Highway 46 East, 3.5 miles east of
Highway 101 in Paso Robles, CA. Tasting Room is open daily from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer.

Annual Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration at Adelaida Cellars

Simeon quake of December 2003, and subsequently founded Safran
Caterer.
About Adelaida Cellars
Situated 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean at nearly 2,000 feet of
elevation, Adelaida Cellars is one of the most respected wineries along
California’s central coast. The award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon,
Pinot Noir, Syrah and Rhône varietals of this family owned and oper-
ated winery originate in two principal estate vineyards (HMR and
Viking) that are highly regarded for their lean calcareous soils,
temperate climates and intensely flavored fruit. Adelaida Cellars offers
many interactive functions including an inviting tasting room, private
wine club events, educational seminars, and regional festivals (see
Emulating the festive occasion established by vignerons in the pasowine.com).
Beaujolais region of France, Adelaida Cellars presents its Annual Beau-
jolais Nouveau Celebration at 6 p.m., Friday, November 21, to salute
the first release of the 2008 Central Coast vintage. Chef Claude Chaz-
alon of Safran Caterer will prepare traditional French peasant fare to
accompany Adelaida’s 2008 Gamay Noir. The cost is $25 per person
or complimentary to all wine club members. Reservations are required
via 1-800-676-1232 x19 or www.adelaida.com.
Last year’s Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration was completely sold out
when more than 100 guests dined on Chef Chazalon’s traditional
coq au vin and the 2007 Gamay Noir. This year, he will be serving
duck and pork cassoulet accompanied by a salad and dessert.
As in France, Adelaida’s Beaujolais Nouveau is made from the
Gamay Noir grape (precisely Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc). Unlike most
red wines, Beaujolais Nouveau is intended for immediate consump-
tion and thus, is fermented and then bottled without barrel or bottle
aging prior to release.
“Our Gamay Noir was made according to the traditional Beaujolais
model of macération carbonique where whole grape clusters are
fermented without crushing,” said Winemaker Terry Culton. “Yeast
penetrates the skins so that each grape functions like a micro-

n Parade of Lights
Celebrate the 23nd anniversary of the Santa Barbara Parade of
Lights on Sunday, December 7th at the Santa Barbara Waterfront. Save
the date as nearly 35 boats dress up in colored lights and parade
around the Harbor.
Bring your camera for a photo with Santa and friends at Santa’s
Village from 3 to 6 p.m. Santa arrives at 3 p.m. escorted by Harbor
Patrol and his elves. Santa’s Village has become a cherished holiday
activity for children of all ages. Located on the City Pier in the Harbor
(below Brophy’s), Santa’s Village will feature 12 tons of snow from the
North Pole, holiday carolers and special treats from Santa Barbara
Maritime Museum.
Come early to cheer on your favorite boats as they prepare for the
Boat Parade beginning at 5:30 p.m. This year’s boat parade theme is
“23 Skidoo.” This American slang phrase became popular during the
Roaring Twenties. Best viewing locations include Stearns Wharf and
the Breakwater in the Harbor. Bring warm coats. For more informa-
tion, call (805) 897-1962 or visit the City’s website at
www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov.

The 2008 Santa Barbara Annual Parade of Lights activities take
place December 7 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the harbor and Stearns
