Week of 4/23/12
It has been very obvious throughout this week that your children are very ready for this break. I hope everyone has a relaxing vacation. I am spending the week in Florida enjoying the relaxed lifestyle of Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel and Captiva Islands. I look forward to hearing all about your adventures when we return.

An informational packet is coming home today for our upcoming Wax Museum project. Your child will need to choose a person to do a biography project on and have a chapter book on that person in school by April 30th. Feel free to send the books in sooner if you have them. We try to keep multiple students from researching the same person and projects are approved on a first come-first served basis. Once your child has approval, they may begin reading and taking notes. Most of the project will be completed at home. I will adjust homework accordingly and help your child to make a long term plan to complete the project requirements on time. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will have math review from 8:00-8:30am. Please let us know if your child is coming, as we will need to prepare materials. I hope everyone one has a relaxing break next week. Warmly,

English Language Arts We have read four different articles and taken notes on the pros and cons of school uniforms. Next, we will begin writing our first 5 paragraph persuasive writing piece on whether children should be required to wear school uniforms or not. Additionally, the Wax Museum chapter books are due ASAP. Your children may begin reading as soon as they have approval on their person. We will also begin Metaphor/Simile poems. Science We now know the difference between an open and a closed circuit. We also tested materials to see which ones were the best conductors of electricity. After break, we will explore the difference between series and parallel circuits.

Math We will begin Unit 10. Please check in with your child to be sure they have completed the study link as well as the assigned math boxes each night. Additionally, a review packet for each math strand will be coming home weekly. Packets will be due on Friday of each week. Social Studies After visiting the tropical climate of the Hawaiian Islands, we will explore the frozen tundra of our largest state, Alaska. We will also continue practicing the West Regions states and capitals. Flashcards and practice materials will be sent home to prepare for the quiz on Thursday, May 3.
