Method Statement for Integral

Crystalline Admixture Waterproofing

1. Scope
This method statement describes the procedure for incorporating crystalline waterproofing
admixture into the concrete mix at the batching plant to achieve integral waterproofing for
structural elements such as basements, water tanks, retaining walls, slabs, and foundations.

2. References
- Project specifications
- Manufacturer’s technical datasheet & Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
- BS EN 206 / ACI 318 / ASTM C494 (admixtures standard)

3. Materials
- Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) / as per mix design
- Aggregates (fine & coarse, as per approved source)
- Potable water
- Crystalline waterproofing admixture (e.g., Xypex, Penetron, Kryton, Fosroc or equivalent)

4. Tools & Equipment

- Concrete batching plant & mixer
- Weighing balance / dosing equipment for admixture
- Transit mixers
- Vibrators for compaction
- Curing equipment (water spray, wet hessian, curing compound if approved)

5. Responsibilities
- Site Engineer / QA-QC Engineer: Ensure correct dosage & compliance with specifications
- Batch Plant Operator: Add admixture as per approved procedure
- Supervisor: Monitor mixing, transportation, placement & curing
- Safety Officer: Ensure safe handling of chemicals and PPE use

6. Procedure
6.1 Delivery & Storage
- Crystalline admixture shall be delivered in sealed, labeled bags/pails.
- Store in dry, shaded area off the ground.

6.2 Mixing at Batching Plant

1. Admixture dosage: 0.8–1.5% of cement content by weight (as per manufacturer).
Example: Cement = 400 kg/m³ → Admixture = 4–6 kg/m³.
2. Add admixture directly into the mixer with aggregates and cement before water is added.
- If liquid admixture: dose via calibrated dispenser.
- If powder admixture: ensure it is dry mixed with cement/aggregates first.
3. Add mixing water and mix for a minimum of 90 seconds to ensure uniform distribution.

6.3 Transportation & Placement

- Transport concrete in transit mixers.
- Place concrete as per standard practice.
- Use mechanical vibrators to achieve full compaction.

6.4 Curing
- Curing must be carried out for minimum 7 days.
- Methods: water ponding, continuous spray, wet burlap, or curing compound (if approved).
- Adequate curing ensures complete hydration and crystal growth.

7. Quality Control
- Verify dosage and mixing time at batching plant.
- Slump test at site to ensure workability.
- Cube/cylinder samples for compressive strength.
- Random inspection for uniformity of mix.

8. Health & Safety

- Workers to wear gloves, goggles, and masks when handling admixture.
- Avoid inhalation or direct contact with skin.
- Refer to MSDS for first aid measures.

9. Advantages of Method
- Permanent waterproofing (becomes integral part of concrete).
- Seals hairline cracks up to 0.4 mm upon contact with water.
- Provides resistance to water ingress, chlorides, and sulfates.
- Eliminates dependency on external membranes.
