METHOD STATEMENT FOR
BACKFILLING WORK
1. 0BJECTIVE:
Whenever the formation level of a particular area is higher than the natural ground level, over
which other civil works like roads, grade slabs, PCC etc. can be built, filling and over which other civil
works like roads, grade slabs, PCC etc. can be built, filling and
2. SCOPE:
The scope of backfilling work is to provide a well compacted/consolidated soil layer as per
required quality norms, thereby withstanding the pressure acting on it.
3. REFERENCE :
Technical Specification
Method of test for soil, determination of dry density of soil by core cutter method.

A. MATERIAL :
METHOD STATEMENT FOR
BACKFILLING WORK
B. GENERAL :
All work shall be in accordance with the Contract specification / BOQ of the Project, and
other relevant Indian standards/ specification and GFC Drawings.
Ensure area is barricaded as per project safety plan as applicable.
Backfilling around/above, masonry / concrete/ hume pipe drain eXcavation shall be done
with approved material after concrete / masonry/ hume pipe is fully set and carried out in
such a way as not to cause undue thrust on any part of the structure and/ or not to cause
differential settlement.
All space between the walls, footings and other foundation structure, and the side of the
excavation shall be refilled to the original surface making due allowance for settlement in
using suitable compaction equipment such as mechanical tamper/rammer or plate/roller
compactor, as suitable.
C. SEQUENCE OF WORK :
The trench to be backfilled shall first be cleaned properly for debris, reinforcements, form
work materials etc.
Then using a permanent paint/pegs thickness of each layer shall be marked on the Structure
face that the thickness of compacted layer.
The soil shall be dumped at one place and spread in specified thickness using suitable
equipment or manually.
Then the soil shall be graded using mortar grader/other leveling equipment/manually to
prepare an even surface
Moisture content of the soil shall be checked and ensured prior to starting compaction.
Each layer shall be compacted by plate compactor / vibratory roller compactor/manual
tamping to achieve 95% f MDD at OMC [[IS 2720- Part 28 – 19741]]
Degree of compaction shall be determined using core cut /sand replacement method.
Once the layer has attained the required compaction, subsequent layer shall be carried out
similarly
Using an earth rammer or a vibrator roller, a minimum of 5 passes over a given area is
recommended for effective compaction.
