1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to outlines the general requirement which should be taken into
consideration for the activity of backfilling work.
2.0 SCOPE
The scope of this method statement is to define the procedure that will be followed for the
backfilling around foundation pits, trenches and any other underground excavations.
BS-1377-Part 4: Methods of tests for soil for civil engineering purposes : Compaction related tests
5.0 METHODOLOGY
A. Cleaning
Before any fill is placed on the intended backfilling area, it will be cleared and grubbed. The
existing ground surface shall be leveled and compacted to prevent the settlements of the fill.
B. Marking
The backfilling levels will be monitored by marking it on a vertical staff to maintain the fill
thicknesses. The fill thickness and the compacted thicknesses shall be as per the given
specification.

C. Backfilling
Back filling around spread footings, strips, foundation tie beams and sub grade for floor slabs
shall be approved fill as specified in the specifications. Fill shall be compact in layers normally
not exceeding 250 mm in thickness and should be achieved a uniform degree of compaction. The
specification shall be strictly followed when the project specified criteria’s are given.
After the fill is done up to the desired level mechanical compaction shall be done by adding
controlled amount of water.
Rammer machine and plate compactor shall be used as compacting devices. The compaction will
begin from the edge of the fill area and gradually comes towards the middle of the fill area.
Filling near the walls and the substructure columns shall be done carefully.
General Backfilling shall achieve a given degree of compaction in the specification. The
frequency of testing shall be as per the specification.
