7.2 WORK PREPARATION FOR BACKFILLING

 Relevant approved drawings to be reviewed and identify the drawing's ID to be mentioned

in the inspection request.

 All Backfilling Materials that will be used in these activities will be visually inspected. To
ensure conformity with NWC/Consultant specifications, the approved design, and the result
will be submitted to the Consultant engineer.

 A sample from the material stockpile that will be used can be taken randomly 2 times
monthly or as per NWC specs, then the sample will be sent to the approved 3rd party lab for
performing the required tests to ensure the characteristics of the material is suitable as per
the project specifications and the approved design.

 The excavation bed level will be clean, free from any debris, and inspected by the approved
3rd party lab. And the result will be submitted to the Consultant engineer/supervisor to
permit to start of backfilling of the bedding material below the pipes.

 The bed level of the backfilling area (Top level of pipe surroundings) will be checked to
ensure the removal of all waste materials due to blowing winds (i.e., debris, papers,
bottles…) before starting the backfilling in layers as per specifications.

 Necessary equipment that will be used in this activity should be checked and tested to be
ready for work time with securing all the required TUVs for compactors or jumpers.

 The total depth of backfilling should be determined to mark the layers levels on the trench
side according to Approval Shop drawing and NWC specifications.

7.3 WORK EXECUTION FOR BACKFILLING

 The approved bedding materials below and Around of the pipes, which will be (SAND) to
Carbon steel, & Ductile Iron pipes. will be shifted in trips and distributed along the approved
section length.

690820937.docx 6 of 17
 A wheel excavator will be used to lower the bedding materials to the trench bottom till the
surveyor marking of the bedding below the pipe top level.
 The site team will level the material to the required marked level.
 In the case of red sand (As a self-compacted material), the backfilled layer will be
submerged with water before lowering the pipes into the trench.
 Backfilling Materials will be mixed with water at the approved given stockpiles land from
NWC to reach the required optimum rate of moisture as per specs.

 AWPT trucks will shift Backfilling Materials from the approved dumping area assigned to
trenches through the planned route with the suitable safety process as per the logistics and
traffic management plan.
 Unloading of backfilling materials will be done under AWPT team supervision to ensure
that safety procedures are followed.
 AWPT surveyors will check the backfilling layers with marking levels one time and mark
them on the trench wall.
 A loader or excavator will be used for mixing the material and loading it in the truck and the
bobcat or backhoe loader will be used to fill the materials in trenches in layers as per marked
by the AWPT surveyor. Excavator may be required to handle filling the material inside the
trench in case of deep trenches.
 While backfilling the material inside the trench all the workers will be standing away from
the same area almost 10 to 15 meters away till that process is over.
 Workers will start spreading the backfilling materials to the marking of each layer and
leveling it with hand tools & bobcat.
 The compacted backfilled layers will not exceed 0.3 m thickness.
 An appropriate roller compactor will be used to compact the backfilled materials to the
required compaction rate as per NWC specifications and the approved design.
 Spreading some water before final compaction is needed to get the perfect compaction and
finishing for the backfilled layer.
 The compaction shall be done in such a way that the vibration doesn’t damage the joints of
pipes so suitable sizes of roller compactors will be selected.
 Each layer should be leveled after each compaction and narrow places like around Manhole
should be compacted by special tools like jumpers and a plate compactor.
 Each layer shall be inspected by a nuclear density test before starting the next layer and the
result will be submitted to NWC for review.
 All details and procedures will follow the approved design & NWC specifications.
 After the backfilling process is completed AWPT will remove all tools, surplus material,
dirt, and rubbish from the site.

690820937.docx 7 of 17
 The same procedures will be done for the layer below the manhole base and tested prior to
pouring the blinding concrete.
 For narrow and deep spaces around the concreted elements will be backfilled with red sand
in layers after finishing the external waterproofing. Each layer will be marked, backfilled,
leveled, and submerged with water.
 For manholes & chambers, backfilling materials will be used following all the previous
required procedures.
 Warning Tape: Acid -and alkali- resistant, polyethylene film warning tape manufactured for
marking and identifying underground utilities, (150 mm) wide and (0.1 mm) thick,
continuously inscribed with a description of the utility; colored (Blue: Water systems)

7.4 WORK INSPECTION FOR BACKFILLING

 Backfilling materials will be inspected by the approved 3rd party lab before work start by
(MIR) to determine the classification of used materials.

 Inspection requests (WIR) will be submitted to NWC before each layer to determine the
place and time of inspection.

 A nuclear test will be performed by the QC-approved Lab in presence of an

NWC/Consultant representative for each layer to determine the compaction ratio. Passed
layer test only will allow performing backfilling of the next layer.

 A technician from the approved 3rd party lab will come to the site to test the compacted
layer.

 The technician will place a steel rod vertically into the layer through the pilot hole, on the
same chosen point.

 The technician will start the test and then keep a safe distance away from the instrument.

 Passed layer test only will allow performing backfilling of the next layer.

 Non-passed layers will be treated and recompacted again to reach the suitable compaction
ratio.

 Results of each layer will be recorded.

 After inspection, the machine and instruments used will be taken out from the site to the 3rd
part lab store.

 All Backfilling Work must be according to the ITP

8.0 SAFETY AND HAZARD PLAN

Hazard identification and associated risk assessment take place to recognize general health and
safety risks from tasks carried out in the workplace. The management of risk is an integral part of
our operations within projects on site. Risks involved in all activities must reduce as low as
reasonably practicable while some activities will always carry residual risks.
8.1 HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

HSE Plan
HSE Risk Assessment.

8.2 PREVENTIVE MEASURE

 Protective tools to be used

• Full PPE.
• Rescue Equipment & tools.
• Air-horn / whistle

 Accident Preventive safety procedure.

 Pre-qualification of all equipment before the start of work.
 All personnel will be site orientated.
 Method statement and risk assessment shall be discussed with all concerned.

9.0 RECORDS

Inspection records generated by this procedure are to be managed following the project
procedure.
Records of monitoring, analysis, and improvement shall be maintained on-site throughout the
contract period, following which they shall be passed to the Corporate Quality Department.
Such records shall be maintained for a period as per the project contract, after which they may
be disposed of.
