METHOD STATEMENT
FOR
STATION SURVEY WORK

1. PURPOSE
This document sets out the Work Method Statement for survey works to be carried out in
planned and systematic manner.

2. SCOPE
To set out the requirements for survey works for MMRDA/9/MMRP/CA48 Project to meet all the
contract requirements and JKIL standards for work operation, safety, quality and environmental
compliance. This includes verification of sub-contractors' Survey/Setting out operations. The Contractor
shall be responsible for all survey works carried out by the Contractor or its sub-Contractor.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES
The personnel listed below have responsibilities as mentioned under Section 6 in this method
statement:

3.1 Project Manager

• The approval of this Method Statement.


• Overall scope of work.
• Coordination of personnel and equipment to ensure continuous program of works during
execution.
• Receiving daily progress reports and distributing to Client's approved representative and JKIL
Management, and ensuring prompt action to any matter highlighted in the same.

3.2 Station Manager

• Implementation of this Method Statement.


• Safety to personnel, incident reporting and implementation of the Safety Management Plan and
Safety Management System.
• Ensuring that the works are carried out in accordance with approved permits and WMS.
• Ensuring that all personnel are fully aware of their duties and responsibilities.
• Liaising with Client's approved representative during the operations and during WMS change,
contingency operations or mitigation works.

3.3 Chief Surveyor


• Implementation of this Method Statement.
• Ensuring that all the survey works conform to Contract requirement.
• Certifying that the works executed are erected within dimensional Tolerance.
• Ensuring that the following records are maintained for the duration of the project or as specified
in the contract:
o Control Record: Master Points, Help and Bench Marks
o Request for Inspection I Survey Control forms
o Survey Checklist for Coordinates and Reduce Level
o Settlement Monitoring Data Of D-Wall
o Reinstatement Survey

3.3 Sr. Surveyor/Surveyor


• Ensuring that all the survey works conform to Contract requirement.
• Assisting Chief Surveyor in carrying out his responsibilities.

4. DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this document the term:

• JKIL :Contractor
• QA :Quality Assurance (applies essentially to process)
• QC :Quality Control (applies essentially to works and products)
• ITP : Inspection &Test Plan-A document that sums up all the information related to
Inspections measurements and tests to be carried out during execution of work
in scope. For the scope, the term ITP is used.
• Shall : Mandatory Requirement
• Should : Recommended Practice
• Surveyor : Person appointed by JKIL to carry out Survey Work.
• Triangulation Point: Reference point, integrated in a measured triangle line.
• Control point : Control point provided by the Client (coordinates N, E, Z (MAHA METRO-
System).
• Help Point (HP) : Additional survey reference point of secondary order.
• Setting Out : Provision of marks, alignments and levels and other information enabling to
carry out
the construction work.
• Monitoring : Control of Works for position and level during construction. Determination of
position,
level and dimensions of the Works. Checks on the stability of the Work through
the determination of magnitude, direction and rate of any movements of the
Works.
• Survey : Collecting data by instrument measurements to determine position (N,E,Z)
and
dimension of objects in a specified coordinate system.
• Survey work : Work associated to Setting out, Monitoring and Survey.

6. SURVEY METHODOLOGY
The following procedure will be followed for carrying out the survey works.

6.1 Instruments
All instruments will be checked at site once a month and be calibrated in Six Month if required.
Each individual instrument will be accompanied with a Check Record Sheet.
The Contractor will establish a Control and Calibration Station where the instruments will be
checked and calibrated. Any instrument damaged or out of range for calibration will be taken out of
production and repaired by authorized personnel.
• The Chief Surveyor is responsible for the check and calibration procedures.

6.2 Control Points and Bench Marks


• Start up
Before commencement of any construction work, the Triangulation Points provided by the Client
will be checked and the co-ordinates will be 'finalized with the Client. The Surveyor will establish
Master Control Points (1000x1000x1000mm) on every station (minimum 04 Nos.), Control Points
and Bench Marks (400x400x400mm) along the alignment, based on the final Control
Coordinates. The Surveyor will establish reference pillar (150x150x150mm) on one side of Guide
Wall in suitable distance.
• Measurements: Control Points
L-5, L-6, M-10, M-9, M-8 & M-7 Control points. will be established with start from L-5, L-6 and
closure to M-9, M-8 & M-7.
• Documentation
The Chief Surveyor will prepare and update the co-ordinates of Control Points and Bench Marks
showing coordinates. responsibilities and dates of establishment. The checking of the reference
points will be done every month or when required. The Client will be informed in writing of
significant discrepancy in values. In the event that a change is required to the previously
accepted co-ordinates, the Surveyor will establish the new values and record the details will be
sent for the Client's approval. Control Points and Bench Marks will be uniquely numbered both at
site and in documentation.
• Input Data
Survey data will be read out from approved and valid drawings specifications or other documents
approved by the Client. The Surveyor will keep his drawings updated and well organized.
Dimensions and measurements given on drawings will be checked by the Surveyor and if there is
some indistinctness. it will be clarified before he uses the drawings for survey works. The Chief
Surveyor is responsible for the correctness of survey reference data stored into the Total Station
memory. The reference data will be downloaded to the Instrument by computer.

6.3 Instrument Software

most of the Surveyors calculations and survey works.

6.4 Survey Documentation

Record sheet will be prepared by the Surveyor for all his survey work. Record sheets will carry
the following information as applicable:

• A Statement of intent to submit survey data of as built structures as per MMRDA Surveyor
requirement.

6.5 Fieldwork

Fieldwork will be carried out complying with the specified tolerances. Corner pegs, axis, and
offset lines will be identified in the field to enable construction monitoring. Specified tolerances shall be
as per the Quality Assurance Management Plan. This plan shall identify control, check and verify the
accuracy. The Chief Surveyor and Surveyor with the co-operation of the Construction staff will ensure
that all stations, MP & HP Pillars, pegs, profiles, rails, marks, etc., are protected. The markings will be
regularly inspected for damage and displacement. The markings shall be re-set out if found displaced.
The Chief Surveyor will ensure that all surveying and setting out records are identifiable and rectified if
required and kept at the site office. All records will clearly identify the works that has been carried out.

6.6 Setting Out


The Surveyor should fully understand the functions of his instrument and the software
accompanied with the instrument. Offset points to a clothoid will be set out perpendicular to the tangent
bearing at respective chainage. If a side line is not specified by clothoid parameters, the perpendicular
offset will be used to set out this line. Help Points (HP) based on the Control Point system, will be
transferred to the underground passage, by using optical plumb instruments, acc. 1 mm/30m.These
help points will be used to transfer and set out alignments and other co-ordinate points to underground.
A final location survey shall be carried out defining location, chainage, grid system and geometry of
main elements and features of Up and Down alignment.

6.7 Checking
Before start of construction, set out markings will be checked by using station points (CP l HP)
different from the ones used for the initial setting out. Alternatively, the control can be performed as a
relation-check, which means checking distances, levels and dimensions from the set out markings to
adjoining existing constructions. The Surveyor wills constantly overview his set out markings and
ensures the construction staff is carrying out the work as per the set out markings. The Surveyor will
have the specified tolerances, so that the survey work is carried out complying with the specified
tolerances.

6.8 Output

The Surveyor will ensure that output information in the form of profiles, pegs, nails, pins and
lines is adequately marked, referenced and projected, and advise the Construction staff, responsible for
the work, to identify the marker and its information.

6.9 Finished Construction

Finished Construction work will be surveyed as specified by Control Plan and as per the
requirements for submitting the As-built drawings.

6.10 Method of Traverse Procedure:


The method of Traverse Procedure is closed or Loop Traverse. A closed Traverse starts from
one Traverse station and closed either on the same station or another station whose location is already
known. The traverse starts from the station A (L-6) and closes on the same station. It forms a dosed
traverse. This type of closed traverse is known as a loop traverse. The traverse starts from the station A
(L-6) whose location is already known or established, and closes at the station X (M-7) whose location
is also known or established this type of closed traverse is called a link traverse or connecting traverse.
Total station Traverse: -In a Total station traverse, the angles, Distance, Beating, Coordinates or
distance are measured with Total station. This is the most accurate method of traversing, and is
generally used for providing a horizontal control. The man power required for conducting a Total station
Traverse will include an Instrument man, one leader and two followers one for Back sight and one for
Fore sight with sufficient man power. The equipment required for conducting a Total station traverse will
include a Total station (With all standard Accessories) Two Tribrach For Back sight and Fore sight, Two
Prism, Three steel Tape (5m), Three tripods, Markers, Paint, Nail, Punch and Hammer.

7. SAFETY
• Risk Assessment report attached as attachment 3 shall be used.
• Survey team shall wear helmets, Safety shoe etc. while working on site.
