1. Scope

This document describes a general procedures and method of backfilling for the Project. Works shall be carried out in
compliance with the drawing and project specification.

2. Equipment and Tools.

 Heavy Equipment – Excavator, Dozer, Dump truck etc. As Per Required (APR)
 Activities Equipment – Roller compactor, Plate compactor and Surveying level instrument

3. Materials
 Water
 Uncontaminated portions of the excavated soil
 Testing Tools

4. Manpower (approximately)
 One engineers and one supervisors.
 Two groups of direct labours containing four labours in each group.(APR)
 One Safety officer.
 One surveyor and two assistants.

5. Backfilling Work Procedure

1. Backfilling work preparation

 Bed levels of backfilling area will checked and all foreign materials which are not required will be removed.( i.e.
debris, shuttering materials, etc.)
 Necessary equipment and tools ( Roller compactor, surveying tools, etc) will be arranged to be ready for work
 Prepare access to the working area and plan for the dump truck and plant movements.
 Backfilling will be done using two types of materials.( i.e. Existing excavated soil and sand). Only the uncontaminated

portions of the excavated soil were kept for this purpose and the rest of the material was already disposed.
 Before Backfilling Concrete, surface repairing will be taken as per Concrete repairing Method statement.
 After Completion of Repairing Work. Concrete surface covered by bitumen paint to prevent ground water and soil
moisture.
2. Backfilling execution
 Backfilling will be executed in layers and the thickness of the layers shall be maximum 30 cm in height.
Water shall be sprinkled intermittently
 Paint marks could be used on back of formwork/shoring surfaces to indicate the levels of each layers.
 The surveying crew will carry out a routine investigation of levels of layers.
 Back filling material will be filled and appropriate water quantity specified by the laboratory test report will be added.
 Each layer will be compacted either by plate or roller compactor depending on the size of the area to be filled.
 At the end of each two layers of compacted soil, the Field Density test shall be carried out to determine the
compaction percentage. In addition, test will be conducted in three locations per each layer of testing. The
compacted (by submerging in water) sand layers sill be subjected to visual inspection.
 Similar method is applied for all corresponding above layers till the finished level achieved.
 If the source of material comes from outside then test shall be carry out from third party as per EN code EN-
1997-2:EN-

6. Inspections and testing

The three phases of inspection are:

1. Initial inspection as soon as bed levels of the backfilling are prepared to receive the backfilling. Upon
the readiness of the work, contractor will submit an inspection request to the consultant for obtain the
approval. This inspection request will verify the following items.
a. Starting levels of the beds.
b. Cleanliness of the backfilling area.
c. Readiness of the equipment, tools and materials
d. Safe access to the backfilling area.

2. Approved shop drawings, concrete dimension drawings and coordinate drawings are pre-requisite
documents for performing a checklist, unless having a special consent from the engineer.
3. The successive work stages will be commenced only upon successfully obtaining the approval for it’s’
predecessor work stage.
Field test

The field test will be carried out as per EN-1997-2:EN-2 – “ “INSPECTION AND TESTING FOR FIELD DENSITY BY CORE
CUTTER METHOD”
The test shall be carried out for each 100 m or less: 1 test per layer. (Consists of 6 samples per test) according to EN
and contract document technical specification
7. Safety and Environment

The entire works will be carried out as per the guidelines established in the Project Specific HSE Plan.

Utmost importance shall be given to safety of personnel and protection of services. It will be ensured that the
personnel involved are thoroughly aware of the Employer Safety regulations. To achieve the above the following
shall also be ensured:

 Proper and safe access will be provided for workmen to reach the work spot and carry out their works safely.
 Necessary and essential lighting and ventilation will be provided during the course work.
