KSA Lesson Plan

Subject: Mathematics 9

Topic: Distance Between Two Points and Midpoint of a Line Segment

Time Allotment: 1 hour

Learning Competency: Solve problems involving distance between two points and midpoint
of a line segment on the Cartesian coordinate plane (M9GE-IIIh-1).

I. Objectives (KSA Format)

Knowledge:
- Define Cartesian Coordinate Plane, coordinates, line segment, distance formula, and
midpoint formula.
- Recall the formulas for distance and midpoint between two points.

Skills:
- Compute the distance between two points given their coordinates.
- Find the midpoint of a line segment given its endpoints.
- Apply the formulas in solving real-life word problems.

Attitudes:
- Show persistence and accuracy in solving problems.
- Appreciate the importance of coordinate geometry in real-life contexts (e.g., navigation,
mapping, design).

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Distance Between Two Points and Midpoint of a Line Segment
Materials: Manila paper/whiteboard, markers, projector (optional), student handouts
References: Grade 9 Math Learner’s Module

III. Procedure
A. Review/Drill
- Quick oral review of plotting points on the Cartesian plane.

B. Motivation (Real-Life Connection)

- Ask: 'If you want to know how far two towns are on a map, how do you compute the
distance?'
- Relate to Google Maps or navigation apps that use coordinate geometry.

C. Lesson Proper
1. Definition of Terms
- Cartesian Coordinate Plane – plane with x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical).
- Coordinates – an ordered pair (x, y).
- Line Segment – part of a line with two endpoints.
- Distance Formula: d = √((x2-x1)² + (y2-y1)²)
- Midpoint Formula: M = ((x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2)

2. Examples (Guided Practice)

- Distance: A(2,3), B(7,11) → √89 ≈ 9.43
- Midpoint: C(-4,2), D(6,8) → (1,5)

3. Group Activity
- Groups solve real-life problems.

D. Generalization
- Ask: 'What formulas help us find distance and midpoint? How do these apply in real life?'

E. Assessment
1. Find the distance between (1,2) and (4,6).
2. Find the midpoint between (-2,5) and (6,-1).
3. A park entrance is at (3,4) and the exit at (9,10). How far apart are they?
4. The endpoints of a bridge are (-8,0) and (4,0). Find the midpoint.
5. Explain how midpoint can be useful in designing a playground.

F. Assignment
- Create one real-life word problem involving midpoint or distance and solve it.
